Berner Rundfahrt 2016
Welcome to Switzerland for the first edition of the Berner Rundfahrt, a one-day race which is raced on a hilly circuit. A hill called Frienisberg will be climbed 5 times in total and will be the main point that should create an interesting and exciting race that may or may not end up in a sprint finish. The race is 170 km in total and many of the best continental sprinters and puncheurs have come to Bern in the hope of claiming victory.

Expecting Bellis to go quite well here, as even if it ends up as a large group sprint he should have an advantage from saving energy over the hills. Kump, Reimer and Gatto are the men to watch in my opinion - as well as Bellis - with Van Asbroeck, Van der Sande and Kadri also likely to go well. |

Really have hopes that Summerhill can take this messy terrain that isn't quite a hill and make something out of it. A late attack here could be possible if the sprinters are too tired and the puncheurs aren't fully engaged.

I think the sprint fields are even scarier than the climbing fields this year. Hopefully Reinhardt will decide to take part in the sprint here, but with this bunch I'm not very ambitious. Between the two home Swiss teams it looks like Margh has the only chance here with Appollonio, so I'll cheer for him.

A good chance for Vantomme here but not sure how much impact the hill will have, my guess is that it'll have quite a bit and he won't be able to contend the win. I've brought Stachowiak and Mørkøv here too for that case, but not so confident of our team here. More likely it goes to Kump or someone similar.

Decidet to not get bring Aberasturi as I was afraid he would be empty at the finale and still feature in Kumps train. Thinking someone fast but with 70 + hill will take it. Hopefully theres some cooperation at front so a group of late attackers wont stay away
Would be pretty pleasing to see Hugo Boss first fully functional sprint train here

Really hope the hills will make an impact here so Reimer could sprint for podium. Maybe even with a train Kruopis/Van Poppel/Ludvigsson. |

In my eyes it should be a race for the pure sprinters, but maybe I´m wrong as a CT newbie...If Vantomme keeps his WT train he could be the man to win. Otherwise I take Zabel or the sympathy pick Richeze.

Smells like break spirit..
Had interest in Kruopis this transfers period, so I will cheer for him.

Didn't bring Sobota here so our train will be missing an important rider we had at Qatar, but with the hill too, I'm doubting there will be a proper mass sprint anyway.

Competition is fierce here. If it comes down to a sprint, it won't be easy. But if it doesn't, we have no chance |

Van der Sande isnt as strong as Modolo over the hills but still better than most sprinters . Energy saving could help him get a solid result, like in his first classic of the season. High starting number is a nice look too, our squad is ready to hunt breaks.

One of the crucial races this season. We send a team hopefully able to dictate the pace: Too fast for guys like Lo Cicero, but not too challenging to prevent riders like Kump or even Reimer being favoured. Right there should be an opportunity for Appollonio or even Aregger to win this thing.
Positioning once more is of utmost importance as the roads only get wider close to the finish line and everyone late to the party will be left without a chance.

Hard to predict this - but considering how a race like Zuri Metzgete which is really similar to this normally turns out I'm inclined to predict Kump. The fact it's flat rated will be a big help for other sprinters that are faster than the Slovenian but worse uphill whilst still being decent. Vantomme might be a solid pick considering his Qatar form.
Glad I'm not here btw considering the startlist, I was undecided between a few races, and whilst this was one of the last in the priority order this might have been 2 wasted race days for the likes of Ulissi or Theuns.
Thanks for covering this Roman.

Bit scared of the hills here, hopefully they don't upset Guerao too much, not being particularly well-suited to them, and he can contest the win. And there's also the looming prospect of a break to watch out for, dangerous when we have a team that is pretty poor on the flat.

Hoping for Bouhanni to survive the hills and earn a good result in the sprint as he has strong support. Would like to see one of our guys in the breakaway as well.

My guys should not be the top favorites here, but this is a great test for Zabel. He should have the ability to fight at the end of this race with his good backups. If he fails I've sent Zingle and Dieteren who are among the best puncheurs here.
A top 5 would make me happy, I feel that it should be possible no matter if the race is riddern hard or soft... We will just have to see. The Bellis/Kump type of riders should be the favorites and they should go 1-2, but hopefully we will get something out of this
Edit: Forgot Reimer, he's as good as Bellis and Kump here

Tipping Bellis, Kump and Reimer to fight for it, but I wouldn't discount the chances of a breakaway either. Impressively diverse startlist it's too difficult to predict really. Good luck guys.
