Bayern Rundfahrt 2015 Preview
Welcome to Germany for the next instalment of the PCT HC calendar, the Bayern Rundfahrt. The 5-day stage race combines flat, hilly and time-trial stages, which should make for some exciting racing and an interesting battle for the GC.
Stage 1 brings a flat start to the race, giving the sprinters the chance to gain the leaders jersey early on before the GC battle begins. A 25 kilometre ITT then follows, giving the TT specialists a shot at a stage win and the GC contenders a chance to put themselves into a great position going into the hilly stage 4.
Stage 3 is another flat one for the sprinters before the aforementioned stage 4 which looks a tough hilly one that should prove decisive in the GC. The hilly finish is relatively tough and the puncheurs with the best all-round climbing ability may do best. The last stage is a final flat one which shouldn't have much impact on the final standings but gives the sprinters another chance to contest a stage.
Last year's winner Ian Bibby is on the startlist once again, along with plenty of other top riders from the PCT division. Let’s have a look at the startlist.
Sprinters
Rider | SP | ACC | Gerald Ciolek | 83 | 79 | Mark Cavendish | 82 | 81 | Óscar Avelino | 82 | 78 | Maxime Vantomme | 82 | 78 | Ricki Nelson | 81 | 81 | Jonas Ahlstrand | 81 | 80 | Giacomo Nizzolo | 80 | 79 | Heinrich Haussler | 80 | 76 |
The division's best are all in attendance for the three flat stages here, headed by Gerald Ciolek who will be the favourite for these stages due to him being the fastest.
The likes of Mark Cavendish, Maxime Vantomme and Óscar Avelino should all provide the German with stiff competition and are all top quality fastmen. There are plenty of other big names as well who could grab a win.
Time-Trialists
Rider | TT | HI | Jacob Fiedler | 83 | 68 | Dominique Cornu | 81 | 72 | Lucas Schädlich | 80 | 64 | Dennis Van Winden | 80 | 63 | Kai Reus | 79 | 74 | Zakkari Dempster | 79 | 64 | Phan Age Haugard | 79 | 60 | Ian Stannard | 79 | 55 |
World class time-trialist Jacob Fiedler is the best rider in his discipline here by quite a bit, and he should be the big favourite for the stage 2 ITT.
The likes of Dominique Cornu, Lucas Schädlich and Dennis Van Winden will be hoping to challenge him for the victory. Cornu especially may also hope to do well in the overall as well with a decent uphill ability.
Puncheurs
Rider | HI | TT | Rui Costa | 80 | 76 | Wilco Kelderman | 80 | 70 | Luis Leon Sanchez Gil | 79 | 75 | Guillaume Levarlet | 79 | 66 | Ian Boswell | 78 | 67 | Tanel Kangert | 77 | 77 | Johnny Hoogerland | 77 | 66 | Mario Vogt | 77 | 65 | Fabio Felline | 77 | 64 | Ian Bibby | 76 | 77 | Ignas Konovalovas | 76 | 75 | Andrei Grivko | 76 | 74 | Giovanni Visconti | 76 | 70 |
Several top puncheurs also are here, and these are the riders that are expected to contest the battle for the GC. The best of these riders are Rui Costa and Wilco Kelderman, with the Portuguese probably the overall favourite due to his combination of TT and climbing ability.
Another overall favourite is Luis Leon Sanchez, who should once again be strong in both disciplines. Guillaume Levarlet is another great puncheur and could be one to watch on stage 4 where he should be able to use a decent all-round climbing ability on the tough hilly finish. The likes of Tanel Kangert and last season's winner Ian Bibby will be hoping to stay with the best puncheurs and beat them with their TT ability.
Overall with so many top riders this should be a great race. The full startlist:

I am actually a bit surprised that you did not mention Boom in your preview...hopefully you did not write the preview after the race and he was anonymous. ;(
I hope for a top10 by him and with 75hill/78TT I hope he can deliver.
Krieger might have a hard time against those sprinters. So can`t expect anything by him but a top10 possibly. Hope that he at least joins the sprints at least. Schädlich to podium in the TT I hope. |

I always write previews before I race any stages. Can't cover everyone, and the rider tables only covered down to 79 TT and 76 Hill so they weren't too long. |

Good to know.
Then hope Boom is performing as I want. |

Expect some nice stage results but may be hard to get a good GC place.
Ahlstrand should fight for top 3/5 in the flat stages and Haugard/Johansson/Wetterhall for top 10 in ITT and then a aggressive Hoogerland for the hilly stage with a little help from Hermans! |

Yeah, I covered last year's edition. Same route this time around but the GC deciding stages are swapped.
The hilly finish from last season: https://pcmdaily.c...d_id=37760
If Fielder starts the hilly stage in the race lead, he could hold on for victory based on last year's results. |

Home race and win goal: This is a very important one for us!
Sanchez of course a great rider rider for races like this. He should get some time on every puncheur bar Costa in the TT. And stage 4 should be hard enough to get rid of well placed TTer.
I brought all the support I can offer to him with Siskevicius, Mohoric and Geschke all here for the hilly stage.
I had some hopes that Geschke might perform on the last stage with a rather difficult finish but after the season start my expectations are reduced. Although this time, it seems as if the amount of hilly sprinters is smaller so who knows ...
The rest of the team is filled with strong allrounder Smukulis, Dzamastagic und Bekmanis who can support LLS well while always being a danger from an attack as well.
Dakteris is only here for the XP (as in nearly every other HC race) but with his decent FL stat and good backups he should be a decent domestique as well
I'm also curious if PCM can handle the intermediate sprints so close to the finish on stage 1 and 5.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Well, there goes my hope for Von Hoff snapping a result in a PCT stage race somewhere
Anyway, I do hope Grivko/Visconti will somehow competitive in the hilly stage. Grivko probably with the better chances overall, but god knows, how the AI will handle the GC-situation after the timetrial..
I therefore strongly favor someone like Boom here. He should be up there after the TT and definitely capable of hanging on in the hills.. We did quite well here with Koren last season, so I'm at least hoping for our riders to show Oz's colours. A Top-15 in the GC is the minimum goal with someone like Grivko.

Stage win goal in this race, Fiedler and stage 2 are probably my best chance of achieving this objective.
Haussler will have difficulties in flat stages with so many high-level riders present in this race.
McEvoy has no possibility of obtaining a good result since in the TT will lose a lot of time.
Costa is my bet for final victory, but there may be a surprise

Hmm, not sure what to expect here.. I hope that Levarlet can be good enough on the hilly stage to get a top 10 in the GC. Other than that, just attack
I'm going for Rui Costa for the win, but it would be nice to see a good performance from Luis Sanchez and Evonik on their home soil. Think it will be a interesting battle.

One of two home races this season and therefore a Top 5 goal.
Let's be slightly pessimistic and not only put Costa and LLS ahead of Kelderman, but Tangert and Bibby as well, and we're still on track for that Top 5.
The puncheur field is rather weak considering our domestiques are still among the best 9 riders, and even though the fact that this time the TT comes first certainly does not play in our cards, there's absolutely no excuse for not putting a ton of pressure on the TTers and drop them by at least 2 or 3 minutes.
There shouldn't be anyone but Bevin ahead of Kelderman after the TT anyway, so leadership issues will not happen.
Of course I had to send Ciolek here as well with the nationality bonus (if that even still exists) and the chance to grab yellow, he'll hopefully get a Giaux-Bar train going for him if they're not designated to chase too hard.
Overall, this is probably the stage race where we can hope for the highest PPRD of the whole season, so that means we'll fail horribly and I shouldn't even have mentioned this.

Tinkoff is mainly here for the XP Points, but has Porsev (with lead-out Boev) for the 3 flat stages, Ovechkin for the ITT, Rybakov (with support of Chernetskiy) for the Reit im Winkl Winklmoos-Alm stage and Pokidov and Shilov for the GC. Our youngest rider, Matvey Zubov wanted to go to Bayern for the German beer...

Oh hell yeah, let's do this.
Considered sending Hugh here but didn't think it'd be worth it. With guys like LLS and Costa here he wouldn't be able to benefit from his TT skill too much anyway.
Not too content with the SP and TT lineups but hey, we have a shot here. A stage win would be good here, Vantomme got Vingerling with him, and otherwise who knows, Van Winden lucky with Daily form?

I'm here with the hope that Cornu can compete in the TT and then hold on with the hilly stage. Also no love for Boeckmans in the preview?
Reus is my tip here.

Nice sprint Ahlstrand! First time of hopefully many he´s up there
Where can I leave in a protest? I require a shared win, impossible to see that Ciolek is first |

Nice stuff from Phelan. Exactly what we want him to do. Hopefully he will join another day's early break to have a shot at the KoM here.
Not good to see Von Hoff doing nothing though... He will be Sh**t in those HC races, it seems
Expecting nothing for the TT, so it's just about a decent ride from Grivko there.
