January is done for the PT teams, which means one stage race with the sprinter/time trial event in the Tour of Qatar, then the hilly Badaling International starter and for ~half of the teams the first PTHC test in the climbing fest Tour of East Java.
So, nothing cobble friendly yet and neither anything for many climbers.
Let`s start with Badaling. Veteran Ponzi, freshly riding for Team UBS showed the younger that it`s still his races to lose! That`s big points for the team followed by Boasson Hagen, best puncheur of 2019 and Koretzky, who surely must be happy to start well after a season of many disappointments. Kinoshita and De Bie follow while Aker`s duo Kwiatkowski/Taaramae worked okay but far from ideal clearly as it was very one sided finish. New star Angel Lopez for Evonik not having performed too well her.
Qatar then became a race for the big flat engines and not so much for the super sprinters and prologue specialists.
In the end Holloway brings back the sprinter strength to EA Vesuvio as very consistent and always at the front. Last years winner Grosu also up there with Bewley next and only Degenkolb as best top sprinter with mroe than 200 points.
Just behind him Groenewegen, Coquard or Kennaugh with Ahlstrand a bit lower than surely hoped, which also must count for Howard and in especially prologue specialists Chavanne (38 pts) or the Grieg duo Wisniowski (22 pts) / Pedersen (5 pts).
Last but not least the Tour of East Java or the fight of most 85/84 climbers. In the end Phinney as new climbing star seems to be less in need of an additional time trial going strong and distancing all others by a lot, which includes GT winners or podium riders Herklotz, Lecuisinier, Taaramae, Madrazo.
Having a strong performance there also Hirt for Moser and Angel Lopez on more mountaineous terrain than he usually prefers.
Sprinter wise once again Holloway showed his strength early season by winning the opener.
What does this mean in total?
EA Vesuvio doesn`t need Andy Schleck`s performances any more to show up high in the rankings. With high consistency of Holloway, Van Garderen and some depth by youngster Wirtgen they are leading the division!
The only team coming close iw Festina, who missed the Coquard dominance in Qatar to beat them but also had good results in total.
A bit behind Isostar and Moser with good performances in at least 2 of those 3 races while Aegon completes the top5 followed by Puma and Rakuten. So lots of predicted PT winners here with Aegon and Rakuten likely building a bit of a gap to the bottom spots for now as clearly being predicted further below once the season goes on a bit longer.
eBuddy and Evonik next must be mentioned. First as they didn`t race East Java and still are high in the rankings and later due to decent consistency without a top performance yet but something that clearly helps to later attack the top5.
At the bottom Generali the only team with less than 100 points but without a top level puncheur or sprinter, they clearly need to wait for the Spilak race days!
cycleYorkshire, Indosar, King Power, Volvo or Tinkoff all in spots, that might have been predicted kind of. They will need better results elsewhere to avoid a long season in the relegation fight. That said, with cobbles not even started and neither all riders even had a single race day, it`s far too early to really predict anything from those 8-10 race days!

Individually Holloway likely the only one having done very well in 2 races! So obvious lead for the US sprinter. Following Phinney as East Java winner, consistent sprinters Grosu and Bewley in Qatar and Ponzi by winning Badaling International.
Groenewegen the first rider, who also did well in 2 races, that said, the difference between winning a stage, points, leader jersey and just coming in 3rd is quite big!
Degenkolb, Herklotz, Coquard and Hagen following with lot s of big names right behind!

Being 100 points outside the top 5 after three races that should suit us fairly well is certainly disappointing but with Qatar and Badaling being such a subpar performance, we only have one way to go. Festina, Isostar, Moser and Puma are already ahead of us and it would be crucial to get a gap on them before the real mountains start.
Hopefully we will have improved for the February update since Portugal, triple header and MSR should be good for us.
Thanks for the update - always much appreciated!

Badaling and Qatar are two of the lowest scoring races we were projected to have in our calendar, so being last at this point of the season is not too unexpected - albeit it's not ideal for sure. Really can't wait for Feb/Mar for the tides to turn. Thanks roturn!

Seriously though, while Holloway taking the Individual lead was expected after the results, its a nice bonus to be the leading team too. 423/628 is not quite the same ratio heights as Holloway hit for his team last year, but impressive nonetheless.
Certainly a few hundred points over par here, so its a great start for the target of being solidly midfield.

Especially with two Americans a top of the individual rankings.

Thanks for the update!
Terrible start from my team. Last year at this point it was already bad, but this time it's even worse. Judging by the stats of my riders I definitely could have expected around 100 points more. Meanwhile a rider like Jiangbao Zhao almost outscored my entire team in Qatar, which has 4 better prologue riders than him.
Hope it gets better from here on, else it will be hard to leave the relegation spots |

Grosu second best scorer in Qatar despite finishing 5th is quite something.
It's good that we are first from the teams that weren't in East Java.

I can only agree with this.
Okay, so 7th at the moment is quite nice. We got quite lucky in Qatar, but that is still only 1/3 of our points scored, so we'd be doing fairly well regardless. I am very happy with the way things are looking though, but I know its a long season and I am not sure if cobbles will be as kind to us. Quintana already scoring 1/4 of his points from last season is nice though. I had guessed he underperformed, or possibly was planned wrong, so Im hopeful he can be a much better scorer this season.

Not where I was hoping we would be after Qatar, Ahlstrand did one good stage and in Badaling was KHJ awful! But the only way is up! |

A very solid start for us!
I was prepared for Arndt's no-show in Badaling thanks to the numerous disappointments last season, so Niu stepping up there lessened the pain and points impact.
Qatar was simply amazing thanks to Sütterlin, plus decent depth scoring.
Scoring better than teams that have MvS and Ahlstrand while saving the 6 race days for Demare to spend better elsewhere is a big win for our early season.
And second for Herklotz in his first race is certainly par for the course.
110pprd from a race that could've been way more random makes selecting band 4 as third priority worth it already.
Not a lot of focus should go into disseminating the overall standings yet, but assuming EA and Aegon might drop while Evonik comes from behind means we're already looking at the 5th place where we want to be by the end...I'd probably say stop the count after the TTT!
Speaking of, that's where we would like to continue this good streak and try to repeat 3rd from last time around, because our triple header won't be strong.
After that, Hallstatt and MSR loom on the horizon already though!

Thank you for an early update, roturn!
Being the third worst team having done Java is worrying, all the more so because it also includes 4/10 race days for both Kwiatkowski and Taaramäe. If they continue in such manner, we'll go down and relegate without a fight. But that will turn! I mean, it has to turn, there's no other option |

Our performance in Badaling was slightly underwhelming, we never score in Qatar and Madrazo had a complete off-day in Java. So not a surprising position to be in.
We definitely need to improve soon.

We're in the safe zone! Woeful Badaling, but a good Qatar, so all in all a fairly good start to the season. Hope the guys keep it up through the spring classics, cause the summer won't be big for us

Obviously disappointed to be down in the relegation zone so early but there's plenty of time for things to change in our push to avoid relegation. We should score relatively well in Portugal, but we may need luck in other races... Hopefully Coppel scores well in Tirreno and maybe McCarthy can do better in the hill classic in the triple clash as well!
