De Ronde van Vlaanderen
It's that time of year again - the time for what many would say is the biggest and best race on the calendar. Forget your Tour de France or your Paris-Roubaix - De Ronde is cycling at its finest, most passionate and most iconic. This year the finish returns to Oudenaarde after last year's arrival in Meerbeke, and the final difficulties will be the Oude Kruisberg and Oude Kwaremont, as opposed to the Muur-Bosberg combo where Bewley cracked Van Avermaet to take his third Ronde on the bounce last year. The Kiwi will be chasing a record fourth Ronde on the bounce, as well as going equal with Roger de Vlaemick as the third most winningest rider in Monuments, on 11. Only Tom Boonen and Eddy Merckx have more.

Trying to stop the Kiwi will be... well, everyone except his Moser teammates really. But if you're looking for alternative winners, this table of favourites and/or interesting outsiders should be your go-to. First and foremost is Bewley himself. After that there are maybe three names who people would consider top contenders to succeed him. Van Avermaet, despite a supposed decline going into this season, is still one of the Kiwi's biggest challengers, coming second here twice in the last two seasons. We know he's still hurting for a win, and left last season with a mental victory over his arch-rival in the East Midlands. But does he still have the legs to challenge Bewley? What about someone younger?
Danny Summerhill hit his prime two years ago and hasn't quite come good on his promise as the ultimate Bewley challenger. Is this to be the season where he fills the cleats of legends and takes a monument? Or is it the French Hope - Florian Senechal? He's settled into a perennial almost-man role since he broke through, but he's young and still developing. Tinkoff have assembled a strong squad to help him, with the loyal powerhouse Sibilla and the young but talented Sulimov with the potential to be key lieutenants.
Aside from the big four, it's a mix of the usual outside podium contenders - Trentin, Kamyshev, Vanspeybrouck, Bakari, Vanbilsen, and some more inexperienced names - the every-improving Stallaert has been hyped as taking a new step this season, with much ado over some Flandrien training camps. Altur, Daniel, Polanc, Gerts and Wisniowski also represent the fresh(ish) blood of the pavé, and all three are well-suited to Flandrien terrain.
Declerq and Potts earn mentions as top 10 shots due to them leading their respective teams, whilst Alexander Kristoff looks in good nick with his new Hugo Boss team, taking a stage win at another recent Ronde - the Ronde van Nederland. He's not quite at the level of Bewley, but surely nobody, not even the Kiwi, wants to bring the Norwegian with them into Oudenaarde. Same goes for an interesting but very long shot - the young Colombian classics sprinter (neither of those two last words sounds right when paired with "Colombian") Fernando Gaviria. Not even at his peak yet, he already has the skills for semi-classics and on a rare non-decisive day here could do some damage - however for a youngster De Ronde is never easy. He could make the bigger points positions (but not earn any as a PCT rider) from a bigger group forming behind the favourites for sure, if he can sprint.
Speaking of PCT riders, the two wildcard teams have provided some excellent quality to the startlist. Lierse have brought Kenneth Vanbilsen - the Belgian Champion. If ever there was a day to breakthrough, where destiny takes over, in his career of riding at the subtop this would be it, in the blessed red, gold and black. Meanwhile Carlsberg also bring a favourite in Vanspeybrouck, as well as the full extent of their deep cobbles line-up, with Nolf, a great lieutenant and top 10 contender, Sinkeldam, a very well-suited rider to this race, and Juul-Jensen, a great puncheur but one who is known to be decent over cobbles, especially when they are uphill like many of the ones tomorrow are! |

Boooooo! Cobbles! Boooooo!
I see this as the monument where someone like GVA could beat Bewley, doubt it will happen but I see it much more likely here than Roubaix...
(And I'm dissapointed my leader is not even mentioned!)

Thanks for the mention, but I think you might be overhyping Gaviria a bit
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

De Ronde! Bewley for the win obvs. Hope Wisniowski will do better than in his previous races so far. If not, this could be a long season...

Could you upload the startlist as well, please? No big deal, but I at least want a feeling to be a part of this
No expectations anyway though. We will barely make the Top-50/100 here..

This is huge
Really looking forward to this, and hopefully it gives us something to cheer for again, after some disappointments. At least I'm hopeful for Trentin here. Profile wise, it's the cobbled monument that should suit him best, even by quite a bit, so a top 5 has to be expected, I think. Hopefully he can challenge GVA for a podium too, assuming Summerhill will be difficult to stop behind Bewley. Fingers crossed!
As Heine points out, this is the monument where Bewley could be beatable, eventhough I can't see it happen this season, especially with GVA declining compared to 2017.
Looking forward to the report! |

Declerq has shown in Italy that he can be up there when the hill stat starts to matter, and I hope he'll have a good day here to limit our losses to the teams spending big money on cobblers.
It appears like he never finished in the Top 25 of this race, so that would surely be a goal to aim for, preferably comfortably within that. Team leader AI being on our side will be crucial.
I lived to see the day where Bakari unironically gets mentioned as a podium contender in a monument. I've seen it all. Where's Theo Bos?

It will be interesting to see if Maxime Daniel is at par with Tom David, or better in general. Obviously beating Tom David's 7th (I think) from last year won't happen, but if he will score better or similar in the Paris-Roubaix / Flandres then I'll be very happy. Also it will be interesting to see if my support riders will actually manage to score more than 5 points each.

Hope your hype is building, guys One question: Who's interested in a broken-up, "live" report (i.e. some bigger parts at the start and middle then maybe some 2-4 picture segments towards the end) a bit later today?

I have only one goal in this race, to have someone on the team able to finish the race within the time limit.

Expectations for Kristoff in cobbled classics are only getting worse...

Our cobble races will probably dicide whether we relegate or not, so let's go Tinkoff!
