The Etoile de Besseges was a late entry to the 2018 calendar, providing an additional opportunity for the puncheurs of the peloton. It's the return of an old name, last seen professionally back in the 2010 season.
Back then, a Level 3 rider with 76 sprint sprung a surprise by winning the first two stages. He would go on to finish 4th overall, and achieve many other things. I think his name was Sam? Just the one hill stage that year, which Francesco Ginanni won, guiding him to the GC win. It's interesting to see some of the names that were also well placed in the overall classification that year:

Ginanni, Van Garderen, Gastauer, Froome and Ponzi are all riders who could have done well in the race this year, but most are up in the ProTour now, and none of them are here.
Let's turn our attention back to this year then.

Three hill stages to compete. Stage 1 is arguably the easiest; Stage 2 offers a longer hill to create some gaps - but does end slightly after the summit. Then Stage 3 with consecutive climbs in the closing stages, and an uphill finish to end it.
| Team | D | #1 | Hill | #2 | Hill | | ENI - MOL | CT | Di Maggio | 82 | Serry | 78 | | Kraftwerk Man Machine | PCT | Flügel | 81 | Mehr-Wenige | 78 | | Indosat Ooredoo - ANZ | PCT | Anuar Aziz | 81 | Grippo | 77 | | Team Reddit | PCT | Lutsenko | 81 | Smit | 75 | | Ayubowan! | PCT | McCarthy | 81 | Pushpakumara | 74 | | Nordstrom - BioWare | PCT | Dowsett | 80 | Pichon | 79 | | World Cycling Centre | PCT | Betancourt | 80 | Boily | 78 | | Iberia - Team Degenkolb | PCT | Izagirre | 80 | Gougeard | 77 | | Generali - EDF | PCT | Ulissi | 80 | Lavery | 76 | | Valio - DeLaval | CT | Gautier | 80 | Paajanen | 75 | | Repsol - Netflix | PCT | Bystrom | 79 | Barrio | 79 | | Azteca - NBCSN | PCT | Chaves | 79 | Nzeke | 76 | | Campari - Super Dry | CT | Ben Nasser | 79 | Kebede | 76 | | Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff | PCT | Prevar | 79 | Orlov | 76 | | Carlsberg - Danske Bank | PCT | Juul-Jensen | 78 | Stuyven | 77 | | Minions | PCT | Quevedo | 78 | Selander | 76 | | Netia - Vónin | PCT | Dyrnes | 78 | Honkisz | 76 | | Carrefour - ESPN | PCT | Palini | 78 | Castroviejo | 75 | | Equinor Pro Cycling | CT | Teklit | 77 | Bugge | 75 | | Philips - Continental | PCT | Dieteren | 77 | Costa | 75 | | Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo PCTeam | PCT | Dall'Oste | 76 | Cerny | 75 | | Meiji - JR East | PCT | Hatanaka | 75 | Mutsumine | 75 | | Signal Iduna | A | Bissinger | 71 | Kal | 70 | | Risa-Ergon | A | Andersson | 71 | Landa | 67 |
Just 4 of the PCT division's 7 81 Hill riders are here - Kinoshita, Schreurs and Froome being the absentees.
There's still going to be a good battle then, and a renewal of rivalries from the Tour de Pologone. Ulissi edged out Anuar Aziz there, while Lutsenko wanted more than 4th, with Flügel and McCarthy also hoping to improve on their Top 6 GC placings.
The CT division also brings a challenge. Gautier is back to strike fear into the PCT riders, having already bested Ulissi and others at the Tour Down Under; while Di Maggio stands out with his 82 Hill stat, albeit weaker support stats.
And as the table above shows, those are many others capable of fighting for victory and results here in France.
Meanwhile the top four candidates for the U25 jersey will be Gougeard, Paulus, Dieteren and Tanovitchii. But there's also Cerny (2nd U25 in Pologne, behind teammate Moscon) and an interesting alternative possibility of
Carthy.

How will Di Maggio, Gautier and Ben Nasser will fare is the question.. many teams do rely on this race in a desperate need for success, it's bound to be a dramatic one, and, as in every hilly race, action packed too!

Highly improbable, but i'd love to see my gamble on bringing Roelandts here work. First stage should be ideal for a rider like him, the issue could be the IA ignores him, and with all hilly stages, IA doesn't consider him as a sprinter, rather as another domestique for Bystrom.
Then, a Top15 for Bystrom like in Pologne could be a decent result, with hopefully some depth around and a good place in Teams standings. And breakaways of course

No chances for us here, so just hoping we can get in the breaks. Other than that, it looks like a terrific field. Hope to see Ulissi continuing his good season and I think IT also should be a good profile for Juul-Jensen, so hopefully he can achieve something.

Wow, I was scared I sent Kinoshita here, based on the opening of the preview for a second. I just dont think the hills will be selective enough to warrant bringing him here, so this will probably end up being one of our worse races of the year. Glad most other 81s are here, probably means we will avoid them later on somewhere.
Kuboki could have a chance at stage 1, although it may end up being a little too hard for him.

Probably not hard enough hills for Anuar Aziz and will suit a rider with a better kick like Lutsenko I think. Don’t really see how he could lose this race. Top-5 backing up from Poland from AA would be wonderful though! Has a decent enough team behind him to achieve that.
Wonder if Gautier will be able to recreate his TDU accolades as wel?

A little surprised that Navardauskas wasn't mentioned in the preview instead of Costa but it's not as if either is likely to get much out of this race. I wish they prove me wrong though Time for Dieteren to step up perhaps. He's been a bit disappointing so far. Originally had intended Rui to be here, but things changed elsewhere and this is what we are going with.
Thanks for the preview SN

Hoping Prevar can do something here, top 10 would be very nice. Top 15 more or less needed.

I brought Cerny as leader here for his Hill/Acc/Spr combo, but seeing how he's talked about in the preview, this was probably a bad gamble. I really hope the AI doesn't go for Dall'Oste as my team leader.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

February was supposed to be the month we'd end well above the relegation mark, but it's been average at best. Therefore all pressure will be on this race, especially with the weaker startlist than I expected for a 3-day stage race.
Lutsenko has to do it here, the short stages with possible small bunch sprints make it look like this race was made for him. Though I feel like these kind of races are always prone for successful early attacks by outsiders. Fingers crossed. |

I'd like Dyrnes to do alright, but honestly, I'm not going to expect heaps from him, but with Honkisz, Kono and Stachowiak too, I'd like to see some attacks!
I'm actually kinda thinking Gautier will win this, would be big for Valio. Thanks for the preview SN!

Eh. Good to see Lutsenko trying I guess, but this stage was simply too flat. No problems though, although we might need some time gaps to beat Ulissi now.

Well, Roelandts' gamble didn't paid off. IA didn't treat him like a sprinter, so he was badly placed and could get 20th. Bystrom in the Top10 is a good sign for latter stages though

Well, Kuboki did what I expected of him, but in the end I think he faded a little too much before the line. Nearly grabbed a very solid result though, but even 12th is acceptable.
