Tour of Qatar Discussion

Another pathetic result... This is a race to forget, despite Coquard probably ending 3rd or 4th in the GC. It was significantly better last season without Coquard trained. I really hope that he will perform better in the other races, otherwise this will be a very difficult season.

Catching Kennaugh should be possible with a 16 stat gap, and he won't lose 40 seconds to Fiedler etc.

14 seconds up to Bewley is not going to happen, it could have been done if it was Degenkolb.

Oh well... A bit of a write-down this race.

I brought four Timetrialists, only Malori managed to not loose any time during the 5 first stages, hopefully he has a good day tomorrow!

This is one of the weirdest ever Qatar`s. As tsmoha said, not really nice to see 2 breaks winning in Qatar. At least without GC changes with it.

Swift again not caring and hence GC wise my two sprinters will drop quite a bit towards the 20-30 area unfortunately with no bonus seconds and neither stage results.

Gallopin getting a win here at least gives me a few more points than I feared but still far from the expectations, which would have been like 1-2 stage wins and regular top3-5 bonus seconds plus top3 GC in especially, which is the big points.

Though also happy to see it`s Gallopin, as this was exactly my idea when signing him. Break and win!

Last but not least this here just makes my day as it`s just too funny, seeing at least 3 riders always stayed in the front group of 30 riders minimum but never were able to deliver anything from it. Well now, this is nice points as I think it should remain easily in a short TT with 3 half decent riders for it.

Team
1Aegon - Lavazza44h39'24 (1)

Plus:

Young
1Rick ZabelDesigual14h54'03 (1)
2Dylan GroenewegenAegon - Lavazza+ 10 (2)
3Erik BaskaMoser - Sygic+ 10 (3)
4Jan BrockhoffIberia - Team Degenkolb+ 10 (4)

And best Prologue rider closely ahead of Baska. So hopefully can get the win there as well, which would be surprising points!

Really, really poor again. To be in the breaks the three first days, all catched, and then see the last two days go to breakaway wins after we didn't get in those breaks is just disappointing.

Lets just hope for a decent epilogue...

No offense to Sagiv personally, who rides his first pro races at the moment and chose the best time to go for it, picking up on my remarks about our passivity.
But that break could've really turned our race around, and we leave the day with five points.
Even in success, we don't really succeed. None of these riders bar Gallopin had better stats.

Disappointing that Qatar only yielded 3 bunch sprints.

Now for my jersey to hopefully be seen anyway. Pfft Kneisky should secure my best GC result here since Swift's win in 2015, while Kittel can roll the dice for a stage win chance.

I think it was bad luck mainly. When Gallopin attacked Sagiv (on the screenshot) was chasing and must have accelerated due to the attack.

This way spending his energy, while others could attack/outsprint him later.

Just a matter of wrong position at the wrong time.

I hope Vlatos can be in that dice roll contest to after Coquards rather bad race (Not as bad as others obviously)...

Van Winden was able to survive these 5 stages without losing time, now I expect a good performance in the last stage because we urgently need points. The top 10 is clearly within reach.

Quite annoying to see breakaways winning like that. No reason for it, no good explanation. Even more annoying considering the fact that Kennaugh is flying in this race.

Not quite so sure he'll be flying in the next stage. Could have used more seconds...

I have mixed feelings from penultimate stage. Another stage not finishing in sprint is just bad here in Qatar. Glad to see Aegon rider suceeded after truly miserable tour though.
Moreover, Degenkolb gained another few seconds on his closest opponents (except Kennaugh) which means overall win is really within reach! Brockhoff still fighting for white jersey is also nice act.

Another successful breakaway, once again we're not there. Esmaeli not showing himself in front of his home crowd after all this time feels a bit disappointing. But we cannot score points anyway, so in the end it doesn't really matter all that much.

Great to see Gallopin taking the stage win for Aegon after a miserable race for them so far.. They could end up with U25 + Teams + stage win, which while being way off target before race with a rider like Swift, could save a little the race for them.

Thanks for the great reports Tamijo!

This year’s Tour of Qatar was a hard race and wind played an important role, also that the sprinter teams only managed to control the race on two of five potential sprinter stages, making it an unusual sprinter race.

Some was lucky others not so much, but all your humble reporter has left to say is goodbye and good luck in races to come.

Congrat to the winner ! and all that got away with more than expected.

Gonzales Salas! Banana Not a big surprise, given he's 80 PRL, but probably no one thought of him as a stage winner today. Always nice to see a Spanish rider winning Smile He was one of my targets had he been available in this transfers, but it couldn't be. Now he might not available next season either Pfft

so from the biggest sprinter stage race of the year

j brought no sprinters and got a 3rd and two 2nds in stage (one from TT)

Cheers PCM absolute no skill in planning there

big condolences to everyone who's leaders underperformed or didn't try

Good ride from O'Shea, who already did quite well last season. Rather disappointing stuff from Dennis though and also Dempster did not shine. 13th in GC is a good result though, even more since Howard unfortunately did not really perform as other, weaker sprinters did. At least that's almost thee riders in the Top-30, but I really would have liked to podium an ITT for a change.. Well, looking at Howson, it could have been worse..

Thanks for the quality reports, Tamijo. Not the most enjoyable Qatar edition from my point of view, but I guess it was about to be expected - at least prior to the race. Always a pity to lose 5 out of 6 TT riders through crosswinds though, so it did not go too well except of Dempster.

Must say I am quite unhappy that Baska did beat Groenewegen today with a weaker prologue stat. Could have been a few points more.

17/18th also not what I obviously wanted. Team ranking and stage win obviously give a few points but far from expectations.

Swift and Groenewegen combined 4pts in the point ranking says it all. Simply horrific sprinter performance.

Normally i probably would be annoyed by a wildcard team to steal points, but with me that far behind, it's a nice point actually for me now.

And another great sprint from Ciolek om stage 5 Shock Super happy with that, eventhough I can't help but wonder what might have been without the breakaway.

For the epilouge, 6th overall looked very possible, so ending up 8th overall is slightly disappointing looking at his performance there and his chances. Though, I would have been happy with 8th overall pre-race, so all in all a good race for us Smile

Congratulations to beagle on the win! Kind of a pity it doesn't give PTHC points, but surely a sign of what's to come when it matters as well, especially seeing the great leadout his team provided.

And thank you for the reports, Tamijo, and also the pace you have posten at, love to see two stages a day! Smile

Still as random as ever.

One point for Sütterlin, and Weinstein misses out on another one by a few tenths.
6 points above the minimum for Puma here, surely our weakest lineup of the season though (apart from the cobbles clash at the very end).

Thanks for the reports Tamijo, in particular for the sprint coverage. Congrats to Iberia and the points taken away from others are greatly appreciated.
Great to see Ciolek on good form for Aker repeating last year's GC result, albeit his best sprints came behind the breaks.
Moser should be happy too, while SotD probably won't. Special commiserations to Aegon, who got a few consolation prizes worth 65 points though.
