Always viewed Tour Down Under as a little bit of a 'lottery-ticket' race, and with the changes to the parcours, this feeling is intensified. Toyed back and forth with sending Betancourt (Hi), JAC (sprints) and Redecker (depleted puncheur sprints), but even covering all those bases, still though was something of a gamble. Hence in the end WCC chose to save our RD's to spend elsewhere.
With the updated stages, surprised to see so many 80/81 puncheurs here. Their respective managers must have fingers-crossed that the extension to the Willunga Hill stage still leads to reasonable enough gaps to see off the sprinters and puncheur-sprinters. The presence of a number of quite strong line-ups for CT teams is not overly surprising, as in some cases for them, a 'lottery-ticket' type race is a gamble worth taking!
As I presume will generally be the norm for 2018 C1 races, a full field with Amateur teams on top of the CT visitors. Although listed last on the start-sheet, I actually like Diesel's line-up for this race. With the combo of Nardin and Felipe, both well suited (in context of an Amateur team), so they might even scrape a point or two here!
Looking forward to your reports Roturn, and a great in-depth preview. Even though not in attendance, WCC will be scrutinising the racing in Oz with a fine-tooth comb trying to glean some feeling for how the rest of the season may pan out.

Was considering coming here with Vantomme, think I might've made the wrong call.
Definitely should be Ullisi winning, but he's Ulissi. Maybe Schruers or Mccarthy then, though I think Ewan might actually have a chance of being not too far from the top!
Thanks for the awesome preview Roturn! Looking forward to the racing!

Not exactly the greatest start ever but I wasn't really expecting a whole lot with the back up stats that Carsi has. Edmondson not losing any time and still very much in the mix to surprise in the GC. Carsi also right there and perhaps he can surprise over the next few days!!
Thanks Roturn for the great report!!

I'm just going to accept my relegation right now because clearly this whole multiple same level pretty decent sprinters thing doesn't work. Firstly, none of Bouhanni, Moser or Vingerling manage to be up there at the end and even worse, Bouhanni somehow goes from being up with the trains to finishing 44th as my best rider. I don't know what is up with that...
Please Moser get involved & please Bouhanni don't be a dimwit.

Another skewed and chaotic sprint. I'm already fearing the Tour of Qatar...

Good win for Goss, but I have to be honest and say sprinting looks even more random and chaotic this year. Glad I decided not to invest a lot in sprinters

Well that was an odd sprint from Gaviria. Good position > falls back > nowhere to be seen > suddenly 4th. But I can't complain, our Australian season part is a success already!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Weird sprint, but impressed on how long we could stay in contention. Should've won this stage for sure, but 2nd and 6th is a great start to the race. Feared for a moment that Stepniak was the main sprinter

Well, I'm glad to say 7th is pretty decent considering the Down Under Classic disaster. Still, how Stauff disappeared from such a good position is a little worrying, we could have at least got 4th but we let that opportunity slip away. Hopefully Bellis can deliver for us later on in the race, but we'll see about that...

Gossy! Thought we would get an Aussie win here, but a bit surprised to see Goss being the one who took it. As expected a no show in the sprint, but very happy to get Landa om the break away. A shame that he didn't get a jersey to show for it, being close to both the KoM and U25. More of that, please!

8th in a sprint from Silva is crazy good, with also Ulissi in the mix. Looks like not sending Theuns here for a change is paying off already. Congrats Eden, looks like another great season incoming for Goss!

Bit disappointing that Kreder didn't get involved in the sprint, but maybe that is to be expected with so many good 79+ sprinters. The finishes on the next 2 stages are a bit more difficult so hopefully he (or Kadri/Favilli) will try there.

oops, F1 bonus seconds? That potentially changes everything, in particular for someone like Ewan or Gaviria.
The result looks pretty fine. The way we got there? Not at all.

I'm feeling quite relieved at the moment that I won't have a sprinter there.

We are considering signing a psychologist to help Drapac overcome his fear of speedbumps.

There are many worse ways to start a season Exhilarated to take the first stage in a semi-home race for Goss. He did exceptionally well last season when his lead-out went AWOL and it’s good to see he’s up for it again.
A very chaotic sprint, but to be expected when the break is reeled in close to home. I imagine the next few stages will be more selective and lead to guys such as Ewan excelling. Not sure what the Willunga stage will hold for us if Goss remains consistent; will Goss or Anuar Aziz be prioritised on the stage? Interested to see what happens
Thanks for the report roturn!

The leadout train I had hoped for didn’t materialise, ultimately. Bit of a shame, but Vandewalle got in the break, so...

Well, I guess that's the point, where I start begging for breakaways. Come on, guys, you do not stand a chance anyway, so at least go trying to show our colors on home turf
Goss doing pretty well again. Good to see him still leading both the race and the points classification! Showing Ewan, who's still bossing the division
