This was our squad for the 2017 season - the promotion class. They are a fantastic team and as a unit they came together week in, week out and made our promotion happen. But we've got to highlight and review their performances individually, from A to V (we need to hire a rider whose name starts with Z).

Dylan Kennett

Taking a stunning Paris - Tours Espoirs win

Highlights: His clever win in the U23 Paris - Tours and his mid-stage attack and eventual 12th in Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne
Lowlights: Not much.
Points: 9 (254th/11th)
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 2
Verdict: One for the future was also one for the present, taking a very nice win in the Paris - Tour Espoirs as well as scoring in other races, namely when he managed 12th in Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne and wore the white jersey in Vuelta al Tachira after his escapade with Onodera. Will return next year for sure, and hopefully for a long time to come.

Marvain Tognama Kossohorou
i.imgur.com/geN51EP.jpg

Leading the breakaway in De Panne

Highlights: His day out in a PCT breakaway (above) and his many invaluable performances on every terrain.
Lowlights: Could have gone in more breaks given his skillset.
Points: 10 (251st/10th)
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 1
Verdict: A quiet season for MTK but his personality and skills are a key part of the squad. Always welcome in a Xero jersey (especially his lovely NC) as one of the nicest guys on the team and one of our "ultra-domestiques".

Matthew Lloyd
i.imgur.com/FqZCJIr.jpg

Catching the break to set up Roux's stage win - Euskal Bizikleta

Highlights: Valuable experience and domestique work.
Lowlights: A bit invisible in breaks or the mountains.
Points: 1 (354th/15th)
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 0
Verdict: As a very experienced rider Lloydy was always valuable in a race squad as road captain. He won't be joining us again next year - looking for a CT team to guide, especially an Oceanic one.

Jamalidin Novardianto
i.imgur.com/B4gBAYC.jpg

Getting second in a Bulgaria stage

Highlights: Podiums in stages in Bulgaria and Herald Sun
Lowlight: Getting denied when attempting to join many breakaways.
Points: 14 (223rd/9th)
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 4
Verdict: A really tough season for our young barodeur. He racked up maybe the most breakaway KMs in the CT last season and almost made the top 50 in the individual standings. So only 4 breakaways for our man but 2 of them were successful. Hopefully in PCT he can refind his 2016 breakaway numbers and find some more success.

Yellow Jersey
Nice setup on the season reviews! Just pointing out that Novardianto was 3rd in that stage, if he was 2nd then Schlegel would've won and I'd gone crazy Smile

jandal7
@Yellow Jersey - Thanks - inspired by Atlantius' of course Pfft Ah yes of course, just me in denial that Kulczyk stole another win from us Pfft

Giving Roux an awesome leadout - Tour of Britain

Highlights: His consistent work as our last man in the hills and in mountain breakaways.
Lowlights: None really.
Points: 27 (171st/9th)
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 5
Verdict: The Cameroonian National Champion stepped his work up a notch and was one of the best superdomestiques in the peloton on hilly days, always there to break the field, protect Roux or give him an awesome leadout. Will be back again next year.

Anthony Roux
i.imgur.com/ZUq86e0.jpg

Taking the win in a gruelling Clasico San Cristobal

Highlight: So many to choose from, but it has to be his two-day assault to go from 27th to 1st in San Luis.
Lowlight: Being targeted by Repsol when he was so close to securing our top 5 and his own 1st place in the standings.
Points: 631 (2nd/1st)
Rider of the Month: 4 (January, May, July, September)
Breakaway Appearances: 0
Verdict: What an absolute legend. The CT's beasty bastard surprised everyone except Vien to be the best puncheur in the CT, consistently picking up stages as well as one classic and one stage race victory. Our hill squad was firing hard but it takes a special someone to bring home the bacon as Roux. We love him.

Jordan Schleck
i.imgur.com/fClpVmz.jpg

Pipped to the line in his NC defence

Highlight: Continuing his development and gaining experience at the Tour of America
Lowlight: If you're invisible you can't have a lowlight.
Points: 0
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 0
Verdict: A quiet season spent doing domestique duties over at Statoil. He has certainly grown as a rider and we look forward to having him back next year.

Nils Schomber
i.imgur.com/RGRj2D2.jpg

In the breakaway - Vuelta al Tachira

Highlights: Some decent prologue performances and his Tachira breakaway.
Lowlights: A small let-down in the Avenir prologue.
Points: 0
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 1
Verdict: The second of our Sch-tatoil loan-outs, and the better-performing of the two. Has grown as a rider and will probably be back again next year for his first full season in Xero colours.

Hamish Schreurs
i.imgur.com/IL8Vtld.jpg

Leading the breakaway with Pedersen - Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne

Highlights: His breakaway in Kuurne and generally good cobbled racing.
Lowlights: Cracking early in the RVV Beloften.
Points: 5 (296th/12th)
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 1
Verdict: The young Kiwi cobbler had a generally good season of domestique work and occasional free roles. He's ready for the step up after two years in the CT and we look forward to making the next step in his career and ours at the same time.

Stijn Vandenbergh
i.imgur.com/5KaDlV5.jpg

Sprinting (never a good sign) for 4th - Lillestrom GP

Highlights: I don't know, maybe one of his lower top 10 results was kind of cool.
Lowlight: Finding a successful break in which he was the strongest that could have given him the GC win in the Tour du Faso, and getting dropped from it.
Points: 50 (120th/7th)
Rider of the Month: 0
Breakaway Appearances: 1
Verdict: A quiet but decent season for our new cobbles leader. He underachieved really but without much support and with the awesome strength of cobblers this year it was a tough ask. He might be back next year if we take a cobbled direction but otherwise he'd prefer to lead in the CT than the PCT.

And that was our 2017 squad, reviewed! Coming soon will be the 2017 Xero Racing Awards, some National and World Championships coverage, and more of thecyclingreport.com's #Repsolgate coverage. See you soon.

Looking forward to seeing how the Xero project develops next season, with some snazzy new colours and new faces that you'll have likely frustratingly have outbidded me for.

Voting for rider of the year appears pretty even so far Wink

2017 Xero Racing p/b Octagon Awards.

It is now time for our team awards winners to be announced - but first the results of our two fan categories. Voted by you all over the last week, our Fan's Race of the Year was:
Spoiler
i.imgur.com/lHn1od4.jpg

Gisborne GP - 50%
=2nd: Tour de San Luis
=2nd: Tour of Bulgaria
=2nd: Giro del Trentino

And next up is our Octagon Fan's Rider of the Year award. The squad have been asking after the votes of the public all week to see who was the best in their eyes. Close voting saw just one vote between first and fifth, but in the end it spaced out a little and was between the fan favourite, the home favourite, and the top scorer. Who pulled away late on to take the victory?
Spoiler
i.imgur.com/GhRLqoI.jpg

George Bennett - 36%
=2nd: Jamalidin Novardianto - 18%
=2nd: Anthony Roux - 18%

I still can't believe he didn't fall over backwards sitting up like that on those slopes! Next up is our Wheelworks Young Rider of the Year. Many candidates for this award, and most of them made a very good go at it in one of our tightest awards this year. But unfortunately from the pool of four or five main contenders, there can only be one winder. And he is:

Dylan Kennett

Moving on now to our Econet Ride of the Year. This is an award for the most impressive individual ride on any given day, and unlike last year we had too many to choose from this year! Some epic rides given in the Xero colours this year makes us very proud indeed. But the winner after a staff vote was:

Unlucky to miss out were Dylan Kennett in Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne, and Anthony Roux on Stage 6 of the Tour of Britain. Moving swiftly on to our My Food Bag Breakaway Rider of the Year. Unlike last year, when Jamalidin Novardianto racked up maybe the most breakaway kilometres of the entire division and earned a Velo d'Or nomination, it was a very close field. Many riders with similar km in their legs, but due to his proficiency in getting in the right breakaway the award goes to:

Just one award left, and it's the other Rider of the Year award: the rider's rider of the year. A less tight vote than the Fan's Rider of the Year, however the fight for first and for third were both nail-biters (if you're into watching kinda bored skinny men hand in pieces of paper). The winner of the Xero Rider's Rider of the Year award is:

2nd: George Bennett
3rd: Tom Davison

Thank you all for watching this evening, to all the staff, sponsors, riders and of course the fans who all make this team what it is. This is something special and it's a pleasure to have facelessly voiced you once again this season.

Stay tuned to the Xero HQ over the off-season for NC and WC news, more coverage of #Repsolgate and a few other goodies!
