On paper probably the easiest of the three mountain stages.
Suaza was dominating on day 2 and totally deserved the race lead.
Valls and Penasa didn`t show much weakness and were performing just equally good while Eastman performed below expectations and surely needs a better ride today if he wants to attack the GC.
Then several others such as Xero`s trio, which worked but didn`t deliver, Anacona, Diaz, Karnulin, Cataldo, Atapuma etc. that surely can beat the top4 on any day.
Panayotov as one of the big underperformers might have to try something today.
8 riders form todays breakaway. One of them the KoM leader Pirazzi, who as 75th is also best placed more than 12min down though.
Kamzong
Ssabagwanya
Eiking
Grabovski
Hofer
Jallays
McCutcheon
Surprisingly Pirazzi only with 6 points on the Cat.2 as McCutcheon and Kamzong were faster.
Eddie Stobart control the peloton but the pace could be a bit higher. Hence a group of 6 riders decide to up the pace and attack. We are just ahead of the Cat.1, which might be the hardest climb today.
Zoidl
Baltazar
Degand
Rujano
Diaz
De Clercq
Most are ~10 min down and no big danger. Diaz though as 16th and just 6'13 a bit more while Rujano had bad luck on day 2 and hence goes for the stage instead.
Eddie Stobart really struggling to control the peloton and hence yet another two attacks. This time by the 12th and 13th in the GC:
Bennett
Kebede
Still 40km in total and 4,2km to the climb for the peloton and Suaza often in the first position already! Medvedev as last real support struggling to do a steady pace.
Hence the GC riders all lurking around, trying to find a weak moment by Suaza.
Valls, Anacona, Penasa just around the Eddie Stobart duo.
Also Cataldo, Karnulin in a fine position while Azteca struggling. Mannion, who was supposed to lead Esatman through the open rows, did lose him and now is waiting on the open left side while Eastman is totally blocked in the middle in the 35th position only. Really a dangerous moment for them..
Balkan saw this moment of struggle by Eastman and hence Karnulin asked Burmann to accelerate the group and once a gap opened after the first 10 riders, Penasa immediately saw this opportunity to attack.
In fact in that group only:
Suaza
Valls
Karnulin
Cataldo
Salinas
Atapuma
Anacona
Bardet
Burmann
Cunego following a bit later and joining them while Mannion, Campero, Panayotov, Moschella and in especially Eastman are in the peloton only.
And the next top favourite struggling. No other than race leader Suaza! And different to the first mountain stage, where he was caught behind and then made an incredible comeback, his look on the bike is not really looking good. And we are 37km away from the finish line!
In fact Cunego, one of the MG greats of all time was key to this situation. Once joining the group, he upped hte pace for Valls and only Cataldo was able to follow. Eiking off the breakaway with them. The other riders got droped behind Suaza even!
Hence right now it`s the Repsol/Cataldo group 40s behind Penasa/Kebede.
Another 50s to the fusioned breakaway and Bennett/Diaz/Rujano group.
Then 30s ahead Kamzong and another minute for stage leader Pirazzi.
Anacona, Burmann, Karnulin, Bardet, Salinas and Atapuma follow 12s behind Suaza with Eastman and co. being 40s down in the peloton.
Azteca now chasing big. Marentes and Briceno working for Eastman and Panayotov right behind them with another ~75 riders more or less exhausted in the slipstream.
On the descent the attacking groups fusioned again and Suaza and the Karnulin group made it back to Valls and Cataldo.
Cunego though still chasing, knowing that Eastman is 1min behind and Penasa still 1min ahead. Valls not willed to give up yet and hence his lieutnant working hard.
Meanwhile Penasa joined the group of midstage attackers and hence is getting some strong support now. Still leading though Pirazzi by 70s.
The lack of up and down climbs in this section really hurts the front group and hence Cunego getting it all back together. Penasa back with them as also the Bennett/Diaz group. Eastman in the background also just 1min behind.
Eastman chasing himself now. His team mates have worked a lot and can`t get him any closer. Just 50s!
And actually he is getting some unexpected support. Some of the GC riders couldn`t follow the high pace and dropped back and now support Eastman`s attempt to close the gap. Surprisingly with them Suaza, who already looked vulnable earlier but also Anacona and Atapuma.
Also Briceno, Panayotov and De Marchi with him while Campero yet another group.
11km and Pirazzi is caught. Penasa working himself now clearly feeling strong and with Eastman/Suaza struggling, it`s him and Valls in great position now.
Atapuma actually almost back with them while Eastman still a few seconds behind just like Suaza. Strong ride by the Aeropostal leader to make it back.
Also a strong ride by Bennett, who yet again attacks. 2nd attempt today and after his weak final 2km in the last mountain stage, he today needs to show something. So far not his season really.
Cataldo and Penasa following is no surprise.
De Clercq and Degand though is as also that Valls isn`t.
Karnulin also attacking a bit later.
Wow. 3 of the top4 struggling today. Most recently it`s Valls with 1,8km to go.
Diaz, Bardet, Cunego, Pirazzi and freaking Atapuma ahead of him as also Salinas a bit further ahead.
With Valls, Burmann, Baltazat and Zoidl while Eastman is following next. All day working and still not in front.
In front though George Bennett, who has still a decent gap to the Penasa/Cataldo group.
Actually Salinas also made it to them and surprisingly chasing himself now against his team mate in front. Not sure if smart. That said, Salinas is their GC rider and gaining time on later is also important.
That`s early! Still more than 200m to go and the gap isn`t that big!
Bennett celebrating himself while Salinas starts the sprint behind with Penasa, Cataldo, Degand and De Clercq with him.
Karnulin still fighting as also Bardet, who are leading the next group.
But it was enough for Bennett. He wins the stage and even better for Xero, Salinas comes over the line in 2nd.
De Clercq on a great day as 3rd. Around 10-15s between each and hence gaps were rewarded today!
Cataldo at +35 in 4th ahead of Penasa, who lost a bit in the end at +49 and same time as Degand, Bardet and Karnulin, who made the cut. Then a bigger gap as the final ramp was big.
Pozzo, Diaz at +1'40 already while Atapuma at +2'02 probably is still happy after his moment of weakness earlier. Panayotov, Cunego, Serrano and Mat Senan with him. Surprisingly 2 Repsol while Valls lost another 24s just like Zoidl and others.
Eastman at +3'09 and hence dropping to 8th in the GC.
Even worse Suaza. +4'33 and this means he is down to 5th due to his gap on the second day. But still very disappointing.
Jordan Schleck not able to finish todays stage and another abandon.
