A short but challenging stage as the next key event for the GC contenders: the hilltop finish ain't as tough as yesterday, but it's a more challenging route before. And of course, the climb looks steep enough to maybe make a difference eventually.
Roux and Boily dominated the competition yesterday. Boily is back in the GC-lead and Roux still has to gain more than a minute to attack him. Chaves and Monfort as maybe the more dangerous contenders, they all looked good yesterday.
Only a few riders tried to get away for the breakaway group and it's really no surprise anymore, that the KoM leader is amongst those, who will form the break of the day eventually:
Costa
Gradek (GC's 52nd)
Moyano
Wahyudi
Van Niekerk
Also D Rosa, Handley, Panayotov, Hardy and Semple tried to go clear, but they failed.
Costa's mission is clear enough and the ever aggressive puncheur takes the first mountain sprint easily!
Unfortunatelly, we do have a few crashes on the tricky descent yet again. Rather early into the stage, but still it's always a moment of shock for those teams being involved:
Diggle (GC's 20th)
Simon (18th)
Cuming
as the most notable victims. The good news is, that they all make it back to the peloton quickly..
With the next few climbs done, the breakaway group went into pieces with only Costa, Van Niekerk and Wahyudi remaining in the lead with something like 35km to go.
Costa did well enough to finally seal the deal and secure himself the well deserved KoM-lead:
Sprint#1: Costa, Wahyudi, Moyano
Sprint#2: Van Nierkerk, Moyano, Costa
Sprint#3: Wahyudi, Costa, Van Niekerk
Sprint#4: Costa, Van Niekerk, Wahyudi
And Costa attacks the remaining two breakaway companions at the final mountain sprint with now just 29km to go! The peloton has narrowed the gap to just a minute in the meantime and Costa is easily dropping Van Niekerk and Wahyudi to take the sprint and to go for a solo attempt:
Provisional KoM: Costa 64, Partridge 28, Jérôme 22, Van Niekerk 20, Wahyudi 12, Roux 12, Boily/Chaves/Monfort 10
18km remaining and Costa is giving the peloton a huge fight: Xero and Nzeke are taking care of the pursuit now, but the gap remains at a minute for now. The pace is pretty high with Nzeke powering at 53kmh at this point. Xero surely have something in mind for today!
Indeed!
Once Costa has been caught inside the final 10km of the stage, we see the first big move of the day on a very short but steep uphill sector:
Roux (GC'S 4th, + 1.20) goes with 9km remaining!
The GC-leader and a few more contenders look attentive though, trying to jump behind this strong looking move quickly:
Chaves
Boily
Pellaud
Hollenstein
Monfort
Bennett
Peterson
Roux is 15 seconds ahead, entering a final flat sector before the finish climb begins!
4km to go and here's Roux entering the final ascent! He's going strong and grows the gap to 36 seconds!
The other attackers couldn't get away from the group, that is now at 70 riders:
Squire leading the group in order to support Chaves and bring back Roux as soon as possible.
Cunego as the most notable name being dropped from this main group, he's further 1'41" behind!
2.5km to go for the main group and Gaimon (GC's 8th) is upping the pace with still Squire working for his captain.
53 riders in this group, that is now already 1'07" behind Roux! Surely he's becoming a real threat for GC-leader Boily, who at least looks like he's willing to accelerate..
What a ride so far: 1.4km to go for Roux, who's 1'04" ahead of the group of GC contenders! Given his 1.20 disadvantage on Boily prior to the stage, he's already more than just a danger for the Canadian (with the additional bonifications probably going to Roux). So it's not just about his second consecutive stage-win, but definitely about the GC-lead as well now!
The gap remains the same when the chasing group enters the final 1.5km: we see a few riders still trying to accelerate and somehow opening up a gap or gaining back time at Roux.
Squire surely with the order to gain back time on Roux
Monfort in danger to lose his 3rd in the GC
Chaves - same here for his 2nd place
Gaimon
Boily obviously should fear Roux the most now
Hollenstein
Also Taborre, Wyss, Anderson, Galindo, Chaoufi, Bennett, Tvetcov and Haavardsholm are well placed in the front of the big group.. but no one seems to really get away, which is good news for Roux in particular! Boily clearly hasn't the best day, if he can't even try to launch a second attack here.
Roux definitely had one of his best days though! He celebrates his second consecutive stage victory and given the latest reported gap - which was at 1'12" now - this ride could be worth everything! What a way to bounce back from his disadvantage after the ITT just two days ago. Stunning performance yet again. And now he has to wait whether Boily can finally gain back some seconds or not..
At least, Boily ain't looking too strong - with now just the final kilometre to go:
Hollenstein seems to get away for a small gap!
Squire still ahead of Monfort, Chaves and Boily right behind them. Not yet accelerating, the GC leader may now just try to hang on with Chaves and Monfort..
The main group is getting smaller with now 47 riders left and several more riders struggle to keep up. We may see a couple of late and minor splits inside this group eventually.
Hollenstein indeed got away, but at which time stopped the clock?
+ 1'22" for Hollenstein, who rides to a strong 2nd place
And that's great news for Roux as well, as his ride will earn him the GC-lead today!
The next few riders kicking off their sprint: still Squire ahead of the GC podium contenders..
+ 1'36" for Squire, who finished ahead of Monfort and Chaves
A strong Goldcorp duo comes in 6th and 7th: Anderson - Gaimon
Boily cracked on the final metres! He's 8th on the stage and should be lucky to finish with the same time as Chaves and Monfort eventually. He never really could respond on Roux's crucial attack, but he's done enough to hang on with Chaves/Monfort.
A strong Haavardsholm and Rodriguez Galino complete the Top-10 ahead of Taborre, Chaoufi, Bennett and Tvetcov. They all finish with the same time as Squire, 1.36 on Roux.
A split then, indeed, as the next bigger group lost half a minute eventually:
+ 2'05" for the group, where Gilbert crosses the line as 15th
Uwizeyimana (GC's 9th)
Wallays (7th)
Wyss
in this group as well. It's no huge drama, but they may drop a spot in the GC after all..
Opposing to Roux, who moves up three spots to claim the GC-lead with just one flat stage to come. Two stage-wins in two days. Gaining back more than two minutes with two great performances. Surely he proved his strengths here. If he avoids a drama in the final stage, we definitely have a deserved GC winner.
Boily doing enough to hold off Chaves and Monfort, who are dropping to 3rd and 4th. Boily also defending the points-lead ahead of Roux. Hollenstein with a strong ride today, 5th on the GC ahead of Rodriguez Galindo, Gaimon and Wallays, who drops from 7th to 8th.
Uwizeyimana still 9th, now ahead of Tvetcov, Wyss, Zoidl, Taborre, Pellaud and Gilbert.
