Tour de San Luis - Stage 6
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_000.png

Next hilly stage and while it's a rather easy profile until the final climb, it maybe considered the queen stage: the hilltop finish is 8.2km long and averages slopes of 7.1%. Definitely a climb, that can make the difference between winning and losing the GC here.

Uwizeyimana moved up to the race-lead yesterday, but he may fear the premium puncheurs, that are still in striking distance: Monfort, Chaves and Boily in particular. Roux has to gain back more than two minutes, but he should be considered a stage-favorite anyway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_001.jpg

The break of the day is quickly formed:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Costa (who else?)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Semple
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Maesen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Panayotov (GC's 68th, + 6.45 as best placed in this group)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Matsumoto

Costa remains aggressive with breakaways, even though there's no mountain sprints across the route today - except of the finish climb, of course.

They build up a 3'30" gap until halfway through the stage, but are not allowed to go further.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_002.jpg

Azteca, Aeropostal, Kulczyk, WCC and Xero as the most active teams in the chase of the breakaway - and the gap is down to 2'50" with 68km to go.

Unfortunatelly, we see a rather big crash in the peloton with just 34km remaining then:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Bennett
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Cuming (GC's 4th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Gilbert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Agostini

all hit the turf!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Squire with a puncture just a few moments later!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Anderson with a crash a couple of kilometres later
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Hofer going down as well!

Except of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Hofer, the mentioned riders are all brought back to the peloton quickly. But as always, the question remains, if they might have been hurt in the fall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_003.jpg

10km before the finish, the early break is caught by the peloton! The top teams worked pretty well here:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Davison currently setting the pace with still the same teams sharing the workload. We're approaching the bottom of the finish climb soon..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_004.jpg

..and the action is on just at the bottom of the ascent:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux (GC's 27th) has to do something today and he does!

We see a few more riders accelerating as well..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_005.jpg

..namely pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily (GC's 9th) on first hand!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Weber is pulling pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves, yet trying to hold Boily's wheel!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort right behind them, accelerating as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_006.jpg

3.8km to go now:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily caught up to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux!

16" behind, there's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves/Weber and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort with a tiny advantage on the peloton, where WCC is trying to slow things down a bit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_007.jpg

They succeed, as group Chaves/Monfort grows the gap to 23" with now 3.3km remaining. Roux/Boily though going strong with a 19" gap on this trio!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_008.jpg

2.5km left and still a similar situation: Roux/Boily now 30" ahead of Chaves/Monfort/Weber, who are further 30" ahead of the pack, that is still at 107 riders and controlled by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Hollenstein (GC's 11th) as the next one trying to get away from the bunch though: he's opening up a small gap quickly, while he sees the gap to Chaves/Monfort grow to 36" with now 2.3km for him.

Roux/Boily further 38" ahead and with just 1.6km until the finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_010.jpg

The leading duo reaches the final kilometre and their advantage on the chasing trio is up to 44" now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_011.jpg

And as the peloton finally goes into pieces, we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo getting away from the main group with now 1.6km to go for himself!

18 riders remain in this main group, that is already 1'50" behind the leading duo:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Tvetcov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Grippo, Pirazzi
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud, Gaimon, Smukulis
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Uwizeyimana, Jiriakov, Jaser
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Simon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Othman, Hugentobler
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Wallays
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Koshevoy, Armee
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Diggle

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_012.jpg

A next group with some big names is additional 34" behind those 18 riders:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Zoidl
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Cunego, Gilbert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Durasek
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Lejman
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Bennett
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Squire
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Cuming

Roux/Boily still going strong with less than a kilometre left for them: 42" ahead of the chasing trio. The stage will go to one of this duo.

Hollenstein 12" ahead of Galindo, who's been able to pull away from the first bigger group quickly..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_013.jpg

..back to the fight for the stage-win: Roux kicking off a late sprint from the leading position! Boily tries to counter, but he's not looking too good in this mission..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_014.jpg

..and indeed: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux holds off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily to take this stage! Both struggled in yesterday's timetrial and they had to bounce back today. They surely did.

Roux with bonifications gained on Boily, who did well to not lose further time on Roux though. Given his advantage prior to the stage and looking at the latest gaps on the chasing groups, the GC-lead is well within reach for Boily.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_015.jpg

And there's quite a gap on the first chasing group, that still has 300metres to go:

Chaves opens up a small gap on Monfort!

Weber finally cracking after some great support for Chaves here. He pulled his captain up this climb and just stopped with about 500metres remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_016.jpg

+ 50" pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves

+ 58" pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort

They tried to compete with Roux/Boily, but they have to admit, that those two have been a league of their own today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_017.jpg

+ 1'39" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Weber, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Hollenstein

Weber with a well deserved 5th on the stage, even though Galindo would have easily go past him if the stage had been a couple of metres longer! Hollenstein couldn't hold off this strong final few kilometres from Galindo, but they established a notable gap on the next group(s) and should improve in the GC that way. Well done.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_018.jpg

About a minute later, the next group reaches the final few hundred metres: the 18-men-group slowly goes into pieces as well!

Wallays, Wyss, Pellaud/Gaimon and Taborre in the first positions..

Grippo and Tvetcov struggling to follow, so does Othman. GC-leader Uwizeyimana doing well so far, but he's dead empty now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_019.jpg

+ 2'35" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Wallays, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Hugentobler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Pellaud, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Gaimon

+ 2'52" for the next 5 riders: Koshevoy, Simon, Tvetcov, Grippo, Othman

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_020.jpg

+ 3'04" for a small group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Uwizeyimana

Also Smukulis, Diggle, Armee and Jiriakov finish with the GC-leader. He surely gave it a fight today, but the climb has been to tough eventually. With three minutes lost on the Roux/Boily, his day as the leader of the race is over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_021.jpg

+ 3'25" for GC's 2nd pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Zoidl, who finishes with Pirazzi, Gilbert and Jaser

+ 3'43" for a big group with Squire, VIchot, Cunego, Khripta, Bennett (who might have been hurt in the crash), Schoonbroodt, Costa

A horrible day for the GC's 4th though:

+ 7'22" for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Cuming as 160th on the stage. Probably hurt in his crash as well..

Two DNFs: Becerra and O Gatto

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_6_022.jpg

A great day for both Roux (stage-win and moving up to 4th in the GC) and Boily (re-claiming the GC lead and the points lead as well). The latter now leading the GC by 45 seconds on Chaves and 51 seconds on Monfort. Roux gained back some seconds and is 1'20" behind Boily now.

Rodriguez Galindo's great ride makes him move up to 5th ahead of Hollenstein (just a second behind) and Wallays, Gaimon. Uwizeyimana is dropping to a still respectable 9th place ahead of Wyss, Zoidl, Smukulis and Tvetcov. Repsol won't be happy with Gilbert (16th), Agostini (24) and Cunego (26) not being at their best so far. Obviously, the same goes for some other riders. Bennett (29) in particular. And also Diggle (20) has a rather quiet race so far.

Another hilly stage tomorrow. Another uphill finish, even though the climb won't be as hard as today's. Still, Boily definitely needs to be attentive again.
