Costa Rican Mountain Classic Preview
This is the first running of this race. The best of the best climbers in PCT will make the trip to Costa Rica to make history as the first ever winner of this race. Two huge climbs, followed by an intermediate flat section lead to a less steep climb to the finish. The climbers are overwhelming favourites to take the win. The flat section leading to the MTF will help the peloton catch up to the break, if it survives this far. Expect the favourites to start launching their attacks as soon as the finishing climb starts.
| Name | MON | STA | RES | REC | ACC | | Henao Montoya | 82 | 75 | 79 | 77 | 73 | | Marquez | 80 | 70 | 78 | 77 | 80 | | Sicard | 82 | 80 | 79 | 82 | 70 | | Denifl | 84 | 75 | 71 | 76 | 65 | | Intxausti | 82 | 78 | 78 | 77 | 70 | | Barguil | 79 | 77 | 77 | 82 | 75 | | Penasa | 79 | 75 | 72 | 77 | 76 | | Nazaret | 80 | 71 | 78 | 75 | 72 | | Berhane | 81 | 77 | 74 | 73 | 68 | | Pinot | 80 | 76 | 79 | 75 | 69 | | Valls | 79 | 78 | 77 | 78 | 72 | | Eastman | 80 | 76 | 75 | 76 | 69 | | Choi | 80 | 77 | 76 | 79 | 68 | | Quintana | 81 | 77 | 76 | 76 | 65 | | Shikai | 81 | 74 | 76 | 78 | 65 |
Boasting a strong climbing ability, coupled with high energy stats, Henao Montoya looks to be the favourite to take the win in this race. He didn't have the best of starts to the season, but his recent performances have improved and he will be looking to keep the upward curve going.
His biggest competitors will be Marquez and Sicard. The latter is an equally strong climber, but with even better backups. However, his acceleration out of the blocks puts him at a slight disadvantage to the Colombian. On the other hand, it is Marquez's impressive acceleration that might give him the absolute edge in the climb to the finish. If he gets an early gap, he might he hard to chase down, given his climbing prowess.
Denifl is the single most powerful climber but his energy stats leave something to desired. His acceleration is very weak, and his best shot at glory is likely to be hard climbing from a long way out to drop his competitors.
Intxausti, as always, will be a formidable competitor on the mountains. Once again, his disadvantage in this race could be his slightly lower acceleration, but he is otherwise an all-round climber.
Three interesting riders to follow in this race will be the CT trio of Penasa, Valls and Eastman. All three teams are among those fighting for promotion and will be hoping that their leaders can get them the big points available in C1. While Eastman is the strongest pure climber among the three, it is Penasa who is perhaps best suited for this race.
Ticos have put their relegation survival hopes in the hands of Barguil. They had a hugely successful outing in the only other mountain classic raced this season so far, the Qatar Oil Mountain classic. They will be looking for a repeat of the same, and frankly mountains look like the only place where they can hope to be very successful.
Haute Route are in a similar position to Ticos and will be hoping that Pinot can deliver them to a high position. They need it!
Compal and Meiji are both lower than they would want and expect to be in the table. Choi and Shikai take up the responsibilities for their respective teams to deliver a good result. While neither are outright favourites for the win, they should be in the running for a top 10, if not even a top 5 finish.
Berhane will be looking to get the back the form of his early season, which has fizzled out somewhat in the past couple of months. Eritel will want to follow up an impressive performance in Norway with something similar here.
Nazaret and Quintana will provide the second option to their teams for a high finish.
| Name | MON | STA | RES | REC | ACC | | Brenes | 79 | 73 | 80 | 70 | 70 | | Kiserlovski | 80 | 72 | 75 | 74 | 66 | | Ji | 80 | 73 | 69 | 73 | 65 | | Solis | 79 | 68 | 78 | 76 | 67 | | Van den Broeck | 79 | 72 | 71 | 70 | 67 | | Krasnoperov | 80 | 68 | 69 | 73 | 61 | | Anacona | 79 | 75 | 72 | 74 | 61 |
The riders mentioned in the above table are equally strong climbers as the favourites but lack the energy and backup stats to make a big impact. The likes of Brenes and Ji will perhaps be more interested in delivering their team leader to a good position before the finish. Reddit's two-pronged attack with Krasnoperov and Anacona will be interesting to follow.

It'll be interesting to see the CT and PCT crossover, just so long as Berhane beats them
It's not been a great season so far from him, but Top 10 remains the target for him here.

Going for Marquez and his strong kick here. Should be a funny race anyway. Reported this one once, irrc. And it was quite interesting (though some big contender crashed in a crucial moment, but dunno remember, who it was). Of course a big race for some CT teams. Should be interesting to see, how Valls or Penasa deliver on this level.

Last year Valls was always in the low top10 of the PCT mountain races, so i hope for something between 6th and 9th. Hopefully Cunego and Serrano can finish in the top25 somehow and give us a few extra points
You don't recall it very well, as this is the first edition of this race

Well... ... mixing some stuff here then Pretty sure we had a similar looking classic at some point.. probably had done too many races in 2015 to remember them all.

I did the only edition of the Kandy Cycling Classic in Sri Lanka last year - does the PCT just have disposable mountain classics based on team nationalities?
Want to see Marquez take this one out, and both want to see Penasa do well cause he's cool and at a cool team but don't because Kulczyk are too good anyway

11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Found it It was the Volcan de Agua Classic in Guatemala! And Contador not crashing, but with an unlucky puncture.

Our first C1 race. A good test for Krasnoperov to see how well he will perform in the ToA.
Expecting to be invisible, but I'm hoping to get some valuable C1 points by not attacking and hanging on. |

Reading the preview, I had a gripping fear that we were here - glad that we are not.

probably the best chance we'll have to win a race this year. Marquez and company have not failed this year, hopefully in this race do not fail again.
after a disastrous month it is important to regain points

Our second time riding up with the PCT boys, first went very as expected, neither great nor terrible. This will see how we can do in one day of brutal mountains. I'm sure overall my squad should be as deep as any here in this terrain, but need a really good day from Eastman to see the results.

That's a coincidence because I'd like to see Penasa do well for the same reasons. And also because we're not good enough compared to WCC or cycleYorkshire lately.
Very excited about this race, an opportunity for PPP to kick it with the big boys. Thanks for the preview Abhi

Super strong team here so anything except a top-5 will be a disappointment. Interesting to see the CT teams with some decent riders here too, they'll definitely mix things up and make it an interesting race

3rd C1 race of the season for us and it's hard to perform worst than the others
Anyway as it's a mountain slog I can dream of Solis and Rujano putting on a miraculous performance and as they're both south American they can know some kind of shortcut to the top
