Nibali looses Ramunas Navardauskas for the Giro.
And of course, I think that the Giro "descent classification" is already a May topic I think it is a horrible idea, as probably many people think, because it was supposed to come up with new ideas to ensure the safety of cycling races and this "classification" encourages the riders to take wild risks in descents.
And right after the unfortunate death of Chad Young in simillar circumstances... I just don't understand.

Not a great weekend for Italy on the racism front with the Muntari incident in Serie A. I suppose Reza should be grateful the race wasn't in Italy otherwise he would have been suspended for complaining about being racially abused.

Is this a joke ??? They seem to have included a downhill competition, so who knows this might be true. Horrible indeed.

It is a competition in very bad taste, especially given the death of Wouter Weylandt only a few years ago at the Giro.
In an ideal World no-one will try to win this award and whoever does win it will refuse to go to the podium. I guess that might be wishful thinking though.

Exactly my thoughts, Weylandt crashed in a descent 6 years ago and then they do this. I wonder if the cycling world will protest hard enough so this award will be withdrawn.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

At least the Cyclist's Union CPA has voiced its opposition, along with Bobbie Traksel, member of the UCI athletes commission. Good chance this will not go through I think

What a pathetic peloton ffs.
descents are part of the route. THey should be raced. it's an important skill.
Everyone knows the risks and can decide for themselves what risks they're willing to take

Call me crazy but I see nothing wrong with this, it's not like riders are forced to race for that prize?
Whoever was going to take risks downhill is going to do it anyways, everyone else that wanted to be careful will keep avoiding risks, and I doubt anyone will change their racing style downhill because of such a minor competition.
There were people on twitter bitching about this and saying that they would have preferred a climbs prize yada yada, did they forget about the KoM competition present in every WT race? Downhill specialists/great bike handlers will be recognized for once, it's often an overlooked aspect of bike racing and it's only noticeable when done to an extreme extent - see Sagan or Nibali before he got a daughter.

Tell that to the countless people who drive responsibly and still get killed in car crashes caused by reckless others every year.
I see lots of comparisons drawn to sprints and the points jersey by the few people that defend this. Besides the long history of it, there's one inherent flaw to that logic though:
In a sprint, all the good sprinters are at the front. If you don't want to get involved, stay behind them.
The best descender however could be anywhere in the race. He could try and sneak past you at any moment.

I watched Tour of Yorkshire over the weekend. Crash in the sprint on stage 1, happened at the front amongst the sprinters, and the innocent guys hanging back got stuffed up with no time to break and ended up on the deck through no fault of their own.
Happens in the Tour, Vuelta, Giro etc. etc.
Now this is an argment against the descent competition, an innocent rider can be caught in a crash through no fault of their own. But it applies to all other aspects of a race as well, and no-one complains about that.

Nobody complained to tram tracks, several years already in races like de panne, croatia,... did they forget Goddaert crashed due to stupid tram tracks and then got killed by a bus who rode behind him

The difference is, it's definitely a goal to win a race. It should not become a goal to get the fastest descent on its own, only as a way of winning the race. The difference with the KoM is the risk involved.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

those people assess the risk of riding on public roads. There's always a small change someone rides over you/into you. It's a risk you take when you go on public roads. If you're not willing to take that small risk, stay inside.

You don't have to complain about the status quo to complain about newly added dangers for no other purpose than marketing.

While that is true, would you approve if you rode on a highway and see a new poster on the side of the road saying
"Daily contest: Whoever has the highest average speed over the next 5 kilometres wins 100€ - The Government"?

Also keep in mind that, in spite of how tragical WW108's death was, Tom Simpson died on a mountain, so if you follow your logic, you should not include KoM's either. |

UCI has called on RCS to drop the competition, so that should settle it all out with the competiton being removed.... or RCS totally go bananas and the civil war of cycling kicks off
