Clasica San Sebastian
Category: HC | 214,6 km | terrain: hilly | Basque Country |
August has hit the PCT, and the train stops in the Pais Vasco for the Clasica San Sebastian. The race has grown a mythique status over the Man-Game and the latest edition has grown it even further, when Oleksandr Prevar went for a late attack and sensationally held on to his spare advantage over a Gazelle-lead raging peloton.
This year it's the question again: Puncheurs or punchy sprinters? The past has shown us diverse outcomes, and beneath the defencding champion Prevar we also have Di Maggio as another winner on the startlist. Both of those are hilly specialists, that's why those are the favourites here.
| Hil | Acc | Sta | Res | Spr | Mo | | Hil | Acc | Sta | Res | Spr | Mo | Di Maggio | 82 | 75 | 73 | 68 | 64 | 65 | Roux | 78 | 75 | 78 | 71 | 57 | 65 | McCarthy | 81 | 74 | 80 | 75 | 63 | 67 | Chaves | 77 | 70 | 73 | 72 | 57 | 74 | Flügel | 81 | 74 | 79 | 67 | 68 | 72 | Beltran | 77 | 74 | 72 | 71 | 65 | 77 | Gautier | 80 | 77 | 76 | 72 | 68 | 68 | Teklit | 77 | 70 | 75 | 72 | 64 | 70 | Vogt | 80 | 61 | 78 | 71 | 62 | 62 | Paulinho | 77 | 75 | 70 | 72 | 68 | 75 | Cunego | 79 | 74 | 74 | 78 | 64 | 80 | Bratashcuk | 77 | 67 | 75 | 70 | 62 | 71 | Bellis | 78 | 75 | 80 | 71 | 74 | 68 | Edet | 77 | 71 | 73 | 69 | 61 | 70 | Caruso | 78 | 77 | 76 | 71 | 70 | 69 | Machado | 77 | 72 | 77 | 74 | 62 | 84 | Roy | 78 | 65 | 68 | 73 | 63 | 62 | Afonso | 77 | 70 | 75 | 73 | 57 | 66 | Waeytens | 78 | 73 | 72 | 70 | 66 | 71 | Le Gac | 77 | 69 | 73 | 74 | 64 | 69 | Sanchez | 78 | 74 | 77 | 77 | 60 | 76 | Prevar | 77 | 73 | 77 | 70 | 67 | 71 | Palini | 78 | 74 | 75 | 68 | 68 | 70 | Zingle | 77 | 76 | 74 | 69 | 66 | 69 | Borges | 78 | 81 | 75 | 73 | 71 | 70 | Dieteren | 77 | 66 | 75 | 70 | 63 | 70 | Gilbert | 78 | 72 | 77 | 73 | 66 | 67 | Siskevicius | 76 | 73 | 71 | 71 | 70 | 72 |
Again, in a HC classic, Flügel and McCarthy have the strongest puncheurs skillset. But will that alone be enough? Surely the benifit from the likes of Kinoshita not here, but a couple of versatile guys could find their place here.
Climbers: Watch out for Damiano Cunego! This guy is a guaranteed attacking machine and had an outstanding puncheurs campaign so far. You surely have to fear him taking a look at the power the oldie still brings down the road on the climbs. And then there is climbers star Tiago Machado. He is yet to prove his puncheurs ability, but working together those two could put the hurts on anybody.
Quickies: #1 Acceleration fear has to be Cyril Gautier. The Sri-Lankan Frenchman has to get away with his accelerating skills early, otherwise he might have to work for his teammate. Di Maggio doesn't have similar issues, but he surely has to combine his hilly ability and his fast punch to get a gap. Borges draws an enourmous danger in any scenario, you have to fear that kick in every scenario.
The Maestro: Luis Leon Sanchez Gil. You don't need to say more: If you're wanting to win this race and don't have an eye on him you're stupid and shouldn't be able to win.
Sprinters: Over the years this race has grown more and more sprinter friendly though. Can anyone of these break the phalanx of winning puncheurs here and break the rules?
| Hil | Spr | Acc | Sta | Res | Mo | | Hil | Spr | Acc | Sta | Res | Mo | Gatto | 74 | 78 | 72 | 71 | 64 | 66 | McEvoy | 76 | 75 | 79 | 75 | 70 | 64 | Aregger | 71 | 78 | 77 | 72 | 71 | 64 | Vastaranta | 76 | 75 | 78 | 73 | 72 | 64 | Houle | 75 | 76 | 78 | 76 | 71 | 66 | Bellis | 78 | 74 | 75 | 80 | 71 | 68 |
Surely the 4 later guys have more chances due to being capatains. All have their ambitions to Top 5, especially in a sprinting finish. The best support though may lay aside of Bellis, who could win in every scenario. But also full captains McEvoy, Vastaranta and Houle could well surprise with a win here, if they're set up well and the race goes right into a bigger sprint.
To finalize it here is the full startlist:

Top 5 goal here after last season's performance. Should be possible I feel, especially considering how Manx International went for our team

Top 5 goal here, and would have to say it'd be a massive failure if we failed to get a top 5 from one of Gautier or Bellis - on paper should expect them both to be in the top 10. Gautier's there to follow the attacks, while Bellis can sit tight for the sprint.
Dream scenario is surely all the 78HIL+ guys coming to the finish together, potential for 2 on the podium then |

I hate to pressure him, but Waeytens needs a result here.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I'd like to see some points by Gilbert and Roux. Let's go. Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the report.

As has been happening all season, I do not expect much from my team. Maybe the top 10 is possible but even this I doubt it will happen

Thanks for the high-detailed preview, Croatia!
Last years route was a little longer, but featured less difficult terrain; resulting in Di Maggio not even making the top30. This seasons San Sebastian Classics more challenging final kilometres should work in his favour.
A repeat of Oscar Gattos 7th place in 2015 isn't likely, but would be something to be okay with, too.
Expect a harder race this time with a small group battling for the win. Weighting the odds Gautier would be my favourite.

Hoping Hoyle can bag a top 10 and keep growing our points total ever so slightly on the way to hopefully securing our place in the PT |

I need some kind of result here from Caruso and/or Roy. We're in our home country so I have high hopes!

Visconti or Shushemoin for us here. Probably need a breakaway to get some points, but will be a tough, hard and entertaining race to watch!
Personally, I think Flügel will take this one. He has very good support in the Wiesenhof squad here, but anything can happen.
Thank you croatia14 for the preview and for racing this one |

Don't have a big favorite in the race, just a couple decent guys, looking for some points to make up for Summerhill not winning Battenkill.

It would be highly appreciated if my team opened its HC score here. Gotta aim for some breakaway luck, though. Perhaps Kastrantas or Gougeard can do something. Or my leaders Le Gac or Vasyliv. Its a long shot, though...

Would be great with a good result from Flügel here, he has the support he needs but riders like McCarthy can beat him

Have no real plans here but with LLS I can hope for the best. Reckon Flugel will take this one though.
Thanks for the excellent preview Croatia!

I'm hoping for a large group finish, where Borges could pose a threat with his acceleration. Machado and Afonso are the best support I could provide him.
However I believe the race will come down to a very different outcome, given its lengh and various difficulties along its route. McCarthy, Flugel, Bellis and Sanchez should be a couple of names to look out for.
Thanks for another great preview Croatia. I really like the way you introduced the different favourites. Can't wait for the report. Good luck everyone!

Cunego 5th will yield us good points to continue our fight for promotion, but much more important is the fact we actually achieved a sponsorgoal with this result! The other riders not ideal, with Scarponi just outside of the points, and Prevar 78th is disappointing, but all in all I cannot complain after this, especially considering how relatively bad Beijing was.

Good 7th by Waeytens, we really needed that! The direct competition is distanced a bit more now.
Thanks for the report!

Great racing as usual here. Gotta feel for Ayubowan, PCM rarely handles double leaderships well, unless it's cobbles
Congrats Heine, Flugel has been incredible this season, and thanks for the lively report Croatia.

Wow Machado 2nd?! I'll take that any day of the week! What a performance!
Congrats to Wiesenhof on a hard fought and well played race. Dietern and Flugel absolutely aced that event!
And thanks Cro for another intense report!
