Giro d'Italia Discussion

The Route

For a proper route presentation, please check Jandal`s excellent Giro 2019 presentation thread: https://pcmdaily....d_id=53759

Route profiles in the spoiler:

The last two GC winners of the Giro d'Italia are here again in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Schleck (2015/2018) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Alarcon (2017) and obviously both will belong to the top favourites again. That being said, the competition at the very top is huge here and in fact both are not even the biggest podium contenders even though the depth of the Giro is rather small GC wise.

The top favourite spot is probably shared between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Herklotz. Both have won a GT before and now want to take the Giro crown as well. Next to Alarcon they are the best climbers here but have a much better allround package which always comes in handy on a 21 day stage race. While Isostar might have the most complete allrounder here, Puma`s reigning Vuelta champ regularly proves to become the very best at 25 years of age only.

Not far behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink has to be named. Former winner of the Vuelta and consistent podium rider in GTs for years now. Next to Spilak the most complete rider here but lacking a bit on the mountains in comparison. Still alongside Schleck and Alarcon the most likely podium contender.

And let`s be honest, those 5 looks easily the best, which makes it a challenge for anyone else to access the top5 fight, but 21 days are long and we have seen crazier things.

The 3 riders with best chances to maybe beat one of the top5 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Henao Montoya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Hirt.
Moser having a steady progression by Hirt into a PT stage racer. This will be his first real opportunity to enter the top5 after being 7th here last season less than 1min behind Alarcon in fact!
Henao Montoya back in the PT after a PCT season and while he often fights for the spots around 10th in GTs, the Giro is different and he seems to like this race. 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th in his palmares and this is surely a chance to land there again.
Quintana could get his best GT result ever as so far he only had a 14th and 16th in his palmares. A top10 is very likely here and top5 not totally far off.

Another step behind with even more need of good days in the mountains another six riders:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Olivier being a consistent ~15th spot GT rider with one Giro top10 in 9th in 2016 though. Good chances to maybe repeat this here.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Haig got some training and is a serious contender for those top10 spots here. So far 3 top20 GT results in his palmares with a 13th being his very best.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates. Adam this is and he always is an interesting rider being ahead of his stats a lot of times. GT wise a huge 2017 TdF finishing 7th. Not impossible but very hard to repeat this.
And obviously we had no Italians so far, a country missing the very big names in GTs for severaly years now after being so successful with Cunego in the past.
So here are two home riders, which need every little extra bit by the crowd.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Bongiorno actually got 8th here in 2017 but usually is ~10 spots further behind. Festina gives him the freedom here to repeat such result.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Formolo is a great support rider but got some training and is here to attack the top10, which easily would be his best result in a GT.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Konig in fact has won the mountain jersey of the Giro back in 2012 and also came in 12th in the weaker field 2017. Such result is not unrealistic this year.

Of those top favourites I`d rank pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Puma with Herklotz no.1 in support as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Arndt is easily the best lieutnant in the mountains of any GC team. Vasyliv is more than decent with various mid level climbers following.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Alarcon has the next best support with a mountain train of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Ndayisenga mainly.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Schleck has two decent riders next to him in Goos and Godoy while makes the difference to the next favourites.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink have great support as well with lots of riders for the mountain stages around them but Jaramillo and Latour as very best are not on the same level as first mentioned or will quickly be the last support.

Other than those top riders, most leaders will have at least 1 support rider until late in the mountains with Indosat and Farfetch negatively need a mention as König really is not having the best support here with only one semi decent climber next to him and Yates also just 1 and tiny 2nd as support. Could really make the difference for those two in the fight for the top10.

Special mention

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Goos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov are all riders with some big GT palmares already and while not being the real names to watch here, it wouldn`t surprise to see them on a stage or two.

Top Sprinters

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Swift easily is the top sprinter here and the man to beat. He is a level ahead of all others and also one of the better "punchy" sprinters in this field. His team support is okay for a solid train having Scully, Oss, Dakteris and Silva with him.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Howard his biggest contender. That said, his team support is rather non-existent focussing on Haig a lot more.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Vesely also having this issue with teh team focus more on the GC but at least he got Sbaragli with him, who could make the difference in the preparation.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel very similar and while the team does not have a big GC rider, his support also is not as strong. Brus mainly with Van der Kooij potentially another helper.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss as last of the top5 here with small support just like in the GC area. A lot on Speirs shoulders here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini for the Italians and he has done well already this season. The support of Stepniak and Cohen is one of the better here and should help him.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff a very similar spinter with Ackermann and Barbier as less strong support though.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Gaviria as best "hilly" sprinter with also good support in Bonifazio and Mareczko, well until the first mountain at least. Impressive though to see the team almost fully unmaxed!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Serebriakov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Bertilsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Afewerki other names to potentially show up regularly but not on the same level.

Stage Hunters

Some riders didn`t get a mention yet or only in another role, though they might actually have a chance for a stage win in their main discipline.

In especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Ginanni has to be named here as best puncheur alongside Spilak, who has a shot on the pure hill stages. Couple others there as well for a later break maybe just like the flat beasts.

The time trials are all a bit hilly, which often goes towards the GC riders then, but some such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Dennis or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Malori belong to the best here and mustn`t be ignored even though Gesink is the clear favourite being best in TTs and having the uphill skills.

My team is build to get the shot at stage success on lots of stagea. Liepins and Eislers as the sprint duo, Vosekalns as our guy for GC + KoM. Sakalou and Egger as additional breakaway guys and Smirnovs and Bekmanis as hilly attackers. Paorstka is only here for XP.

GC wose im very glad to see Spilak, Herklotz and Gesink here. But i hoped for a couple more big names here for reasons that can be spelled in three letters.

Excellent preview! Thanks for that!
A Big Thank You To All MG And ICL Reporters!
And To All Who Organize Something On Daily As Well!

It's Spilaks to loose this.
Will be super fun to follow for us CT guys Smile
Grashev leads our GC charge, Edmo for the sprints, Barbadian Champ Matthews for the TT's, and Queen Le Court for the hills. It's a team truly capable of winning every single thing in this race, and totally not picked for entirely XP reasons and because we have to turn up to the GT's without any interest in them whatsoever...

Plus we've done the Giro before so who cares Pfft
It's been a while since we've been here, really good to be back. I could've made it a fully unmaxed team, but we all remember Dall'Oste great race last time, and I couldn't deny him another chance at that mountain jersey. Oomen could also try for the white jersey maybe. And then there's Gaviria on the sprint stages, so we do plan to have an impact on this race again!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.
Giro was never really an option for Phinney, but very happy to see riders like Spilak, Herklotz and Gesink here. Good news for us!

Not the biggest expectations in the race. Hopefully a good amount of breakaways and Nesset top 25.
The Giro is not that high of an priority of ours. Poljanski and Raileanu will have a tough time securing the lesser point giving GC positions, but that is their objective. Guardini in the sprints this season has been impressive and with this being our main objective, this is where the bulk of our points should come from

Beyond that it looks like it was a good idea not to send Wellens to this GC and hopefully I've chosen correct in that department. The Top 10 is already gonna be hard enough, so lots of chances to see great actions. We haven't bought the best breakaway riders, but perhaps the game will assign Raileanu or Poljanski to that duty.

Let's get this first GT under way!

This is it. The race of truth for our season. A chance to start a legacy.

The route is ideal for Herklotz. The TTs are short and hard, or long and hard. The tough stages are very long and require a strong punch.

With these characteristics, it's not surprising that the Giro attracted the two strongest puncheurs among the world class stage racers, but beyond that, I'm very happy how the startlist looks.
In particular since we have a Top 3 season goal here, just 3 other of the 12 83+MO riders signing up for this is a very good sign.

The feud Herklotz vs Spilak goes into another round, with the stakes higher than ever before.
It will be hard to drop the Slovenian anywhere, but it'll also be hard for him to use his superior TT considering the profiles of those, MO and PRL should be more important.
To beat Spilak, we have to be more consistent, and more daring than him.

Gesink is a very intriguing name to appear here, as he is the most complete stage racer and comes from a GC win recently like Herklotz.
He would've liked flat TTs more just like Spilak, but he will surely try to make a bid for the overall win on many other stages he's suited to.
To beat Gesink, we have to make the race hard and ride away from him at the end of the hardest climbs.

Alarcon is always a fun rider to watch in any GT as he provided plenty of entertainment throughout the years.
He won't enjoy the lesser influence of ACC and surely has some trouble falling asleep going into this race when looking at his HIL and secondary stats compared to the big three, but he does know how to how to be successful regardless.
To beat Alarcon, we have to attack when the road rises the steepest and not allow him opportunities to make up for his TT losses.

Schleck in the Giro has become a classic and I respect his palmares in this race very much.
It'll be nice to see him have a last go at a podium and find sneaky ways to give himself the best odds to achieve that. Just like Alarcon though, he won't enjoy the long hilly stages.
To beat Schleck, we have to keep an eye on him at all times and not let him slip away unnoticed.

Beyond those four, I do not consider anyone to be good enough to challenge these 5, with weak TT and/or HIL stats across the board which will make it even more difficult to make up for the MO difference.
I do expect to be surprised by a few of these riders though.

We obviously bring the A team here, in particular since there's no TTT to cater to.

Nikias Arndt is the best superdomestique we could ask for, with his great TdF endeavours of recent years surely still in the memory of many observers.
It'll be crucial to Herklotz' success to have him ride a strong and consistent race in support of him, to ensure no lapse of focus sees an unbridgeable gap to a favorite appear, and to ideally put pressure on the others to even hang on to him and Silvio's wheel.
In particular the hilly stages are well suited to both of them compared to many other leader-domestique duos, and we need to make use of that.

Yuriy Vasyliv had a great start in our team with a recent overperformance in Pais Vasco, and we hope he can repeat those efforts here.
To be on the same level as many second best climbers on other teams means he has the task of keeping up with their performances to free up Arndt to be the extra chess piece in our ranks.

Colin Stüssi has an even bigger overperformance to his name with the breakaway in Praha-Karlovy Vahy-Praha to finish 4th there, and we hope he can bring his high morale into this lineup to elevate its level even further.
Similar to Vasyliv, he has great energy stats for a GT and that has to translate into consistent domestique performances.

Christian Mager is our 5th best climber here, and our 5th best German-speaking climber as well!
I bank on this natural cohesion based on language to help us form a stronger unit against the other teams, being helpful in communication among themselves as well as with the DS, and extra motivation to help Herklotz chase the victory.

Conor Dunne and Janvier Hadi are very versatile climbers that will form the backbone of our formation in the mountain stages to keep breaks in sight and our squad as a whole at the front of the peloton, while Luca Wackermann is a great 8th rider for the flats and easier hilly stages to grab bottles and chase early.

Last but not least, my expectations for this Giro d'Italia:

There's no excuse not to finish on the podium here and achieve our minimum goal.
I also expect Herklotz to spend 21 days in white and grab those free points, with that prologue being a great opportunity to start with a stage podium beyond that too.

It's also not just about this Giro, but if we want to even get close to our Top 5 overall rankings goal this season, we have to take massive points here.

Whether we can make it 2 of 2 and tick off the second Grand Tour to maybe focus on the TdF going forward remains to be seen, but I have faith!
Herklotz beat Spilak this season already, and Gesink has -2MO that I hope will matter enough over three weeks. Let's prove the Vuelta wasn't a fluke!

Thank you roturn for this preview and taking care of the race, let's bring it on guys and chase pink!
Looking at the startlist, I couldn't have asked for any better thinking of Swift and his chances to dominate the flat stages. The team we've brought is also very much built for him and the leadout, and hopefully he can deliver.

Had this been a previous season, I would expect maybe four or even more stage wins looking at the profiles and the contenders, assuming no breakaway runs away with the flat stages. Though, with this edition you never know. At least it's difficult to have any better shot at GT sprint success with Swift, I feel. Fingers crossed!

Herklotz versus Spilak versus Gesink should be fun! Grin
Not a lot of expectations here. A decent sprinter and a GC rider for 10-15th...

Nice preview, thanks.

We don't expect a large point haul here, but we do have a number of riders who could show themselves under the right circumstances.

If the hilly stages turn out to be pure HI, Ginanni has a huge chance of stage success. And if the MO stat turns out to be important there, Formolo actually has a good shot. The latter could also do well in GC if he manages to be consistent in all MO and HI stages.

Then there's Kruijswijk, who's a proven stage hunter from breakaways. Curious whether that continues under the new AI.

And of course Kangert, who in previous seasons always seemed to punch above his weight. This season we witnessed his first disappointing performance in a long time though, so let's see whether he can bounce back.

Expectations for me are pretty high, which is not ideal to report myself to be honest.

Vesely a top3 sprinter here, so I want a stage win and fighting for the point jersey.

Olivier is a top10 rider on paper here as well, so this is a must basically as he won`t see many stage races with such startlist that offers him a realistic fight for the top10. And short and hilly time trials also are in favour to him as weaker time trialist.

Support is big here really with Dekker, Zardini, Hugenhaben, Koep all with him for the hard stages while Sbaragli is for Vesely.

To be honest not ideal as I should have sent Bauhaus as well here if I had known Vesely is one of the top3 to make it a proper train.

Van Hooydonck just here for experience.

GC wise an interesting battle there surely for the win.
Finally mountains yes!! Win Goal here for Alarcon that was never going to be achieved unless i had gotten the top climber i wanted, so i was kinda forced to send him here to have a chance to accomplish this goal, or just moderately fail it. I like the chances for a GC podium, though seems likely that it's going to be only enough for 4th. True is that Kudus could have fought for the Top5 in the startlist, but chose to avoid Herklotz in GC (and any race in general) for the U25 points.

Full mountain support for Alarcon, not sure whether riders as Ndayisenga or Roson will join breakaways some times, quite unlikely being so high in the favourites list. Only Basso as a development rider, but he's quite useful in many terrains that it won't matter.

Btw, i'm really surprised to see Gesink here. Makes me feel better about my TDF choices Pfft
Manager of [MG] Repsol - Netflix

^ behind my decision to take Gesink here is mostly the fact that the Giro opens with a TT that should really suit him. Looking at past PCM behaviours (and the way Gesink won a Vuelta in PCM 15), getting the leader jersey early should give him a form boost.

I'm obviously banking on a big if (i.e. can he actually take the pink early?) but that seemed like a marginally better decision than going to a much more top climbers filled Tour or a Vuelta where his TT advantage wouldn't have shun as much given all top TTists are gonna be there. Plus I had a win goal here actually.

That being said, hell yeah it's the Giro I can't wait, crucial turning point to our season. I don't think Gesink can legitimately take on Spilak and Silvio but a podium should be really doable imo with some luck. My team is strong here and good depth has worked well for me before so surely it won't fail me now that it counts the most?

Thanks for the preview roturn and good luck everyone!

No chance for a podium, but hoping for a good race from Henao and maybe a top 5. Top 7/8 is more realistic, but one can always hope!

If I leave this race with a stage win and a good GC position from Henao I will be really happy, hope that him not being among the top, top favorites will allow some of my other riders to join breaks
Well Herklotz here is a huge surprise, and doesn't make sense at all looking at the Tour route imo. But hey, now we have the problem of dealing with the strongest Stage Racer. Tailor made for Spilak and Gesink, this makes it 3 of the top5 stage racers in MG2019 sadly and thus most likely the hardest GT to win. Let's hope the team that is fully committed to support Spilak can deliver here.

Well Herklotz here is a huge surprise, and doesn't make sense at all looking at the Tour route imo. But hey, now we have the problem of dealing with the strongest Stage Racer.

1) I didn't want to have the problem of dealing with any 85mo riders, and that worked out quite well.

2) I like the TTs here. A lot. And if we can Top 3 the prologue, that's a nice AI boost right from the start.

3) Spending the entire last eligible GT in white (at least) is a fun goal.

4) I might have a star sprinter to cater to as well. Wink

I do not expect you or anyone else to agree with any of that though. Just personal preference and a bit of storytelling.
Was expecting Paris Roubaix to already be posted by now but as the riders don`t really clash at all except some helpers maybe, I thought to give it a go to start the first GT of the season.

Congrats Cio as this one was kind of unexpected. Big start for you.

Can`t be unhappy with Dekker in top10 and Olivier just a bit outside not losing a lot.

Gesink/Spilak surely need to improve if they already lose time on stages, that should have favoured them.

F*** me I take everything back cio. This will be a start - finish victory.
