The Tour of Southland has a new look this year. Instead of Bluff Hill and Coronet Peak, it`s a flat based race only for the sprinters, that used to play a big role already in the past as well.
Though GC wise it`s a race for the time trialists as the opening stage is a 4,7km prologue and then the decision on day 4 with a 35km ITT, which is supposed to bring the decision and hence lots of high quality time trialist went to a C1 event.
Coppel basically is too good for PCT but went down this season. While usually having the advantage in hilly races as well, his TT alone makes him top favourite as well here in Southland.
Zmorka is another rider, that is PT material normally, but as pure chrono rider, a lot more difficult to go for a big palmares. Here in Southland he could add something.
Aussies Ford and Durbridge both no longer for Oz and instead will try to win for Novatek and cycleYorkshire not close from their home country.
Even closer Sergent, who might be from Northland originally but it`s the home crowd`s biggest star here and they hope to see him win the GC or at least a stage.
On the same level as his are Schädlich, Cornu and Viennet.
| TT | Prl | | TT | Prl | Coppel | 83 | 83 | Janse van Rensburg | 78 | 78 | Zmorka | 82 | 82 | Reus | 78 | 78 | Ford | 81 | 81 | Tennant | 78 | 77 | Durbridge | 81 | 81 | Martin | 78 | 77 | Schädlich | 80 | 80 | Postlberger | 77 | 77 | Sergent | 80 | 80 | Cheung | 77 | 77 | Cornu | 80 | 80 | Downey | 77 | 77 | Viennet | 80 | 80 | Hacecký | 77 | 76 | Goldstein | 79 | 79 | Laizer | 77 | 76 | Stannard | 79 | 79 | Fominykh | 77 | 76 | Mottin | 79 | 79 | Hamza | 76 | 79 | Li | 78 | 78 | Meyer | 73 | 78 | Kovalev | 78 | 78 | Kiflay | 76 | 77 |
With 3 stages for the fast riders, it`s obviously to see many sprinters targetting for the race. Some even with a proper prologue to have good chances to keep the GC lead for some days.
Lo Cicero and Cavendish easily the stand out riders in Southland. But several more great sprinters.
Team wise Carrefour should be able to deliver a nice train for Lo Cicero. Same goes easily for Kraftwerk and Cavendish or Fablok and Guardini. Drapac`s Minions might show up as well for him.
| Sp | Acc | Prl | | Sp | Acc | Prl | Lo Cicero | 84 | 78 | 75 | Stepniak | 79 | 79 | 73 | Cavendish | 83 | 81 | 76 | Suryadi | 79 | 76 | 64 | Guillén | 81 | 82 | 56 | Te Brake | 79 | 76 | 75 | Meyer | 80 | 76 | 78 | Mezgec | 79 | 77 | 70 | Moser | 80 | 79 | 72 | Willwohl | 79 | 78 | 56 | Carsi | 80 | 82 | 71 | Krieger | 79 | 79 | 55 | Serebriakov | 80 | 77 | 72 | Brus | 78 | 78 | 68 | Itami | 80 | 82 | 63 | Nepomnyachsniy | 78 | 76 | 67 | Stauff | 80 | 81 | 74 | Avila | 78 | 77 | 60 | Drapac | 80 | 79 | 60 | Wippert | 78 | 82 | 74 | Guardini | 80 | 82 | 59 | Jørgensen | 78 | 73 | 58 | Vingerling | 79 | 79 | 76 | Tewelde | 78 | 77 | 67 | Hochmann | 79 | 80 | 75 | | | | |

Necessary evil not to come here - an unecessary evil is making this a TT race now Cheering for Sergent obviously, and hope BNZ can be seen and do something too!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Not a lot to expect from here and expecting something along the lines of Ras Tailteann, Will need freak results to get something tangible out of this race.
Thanks for the preview

That's some sprinters field! Will be very tough for us to do much here, so hopefully we'll try our luck in the breaks.

Important race for Reddit, but Coppel seems to be unbeatable in the longer TT. Hoping for no crosswinds and the #2 GC spot for Zmorka. |

Good memories from this race. Martinez winning our first ever GC, but that route still had the mountains in it. Janse van Rensburg has been a bit mediocre so far, but with two time trials he should be near the front. Profiles also suit Drapac for the sprints, so I have two horses to bet on here.

Until a certain limit, I can dream of Mottin finishing in the Top 10 cause he has ridden strongly on C1 last year, I'm excited but things can also easily turn into a no-one in the Top 20 with this startlist.

Really need Cornu to get a Top 5 GC here at the very least, especially given the struggles of late for my team. Moser should also have a decent chance of gaining some good stage results in the sprints, especially with Vingerling for support, but I honestly have no hope in him so anything will be a bonus. Would also be nice to see some aggressive breakaway riding from the team.

Hope Cheung can grab us a decent GC place, while Itami gets the stage results. Not expecting much here, especially given the field, but I dont think we will do too terribly.

Hoping we can do better on the longer TT and Guillen wasn't in last place

2nd. Can't say I'm surprised, but I am relieved that Zmorka is matching my expectations.
Especially happy to lead the team standings though, hope we can surprise there! |

Not the bad effort for 5th from Cornu. Now for my sprinters to disappoint me once again...

11th for Mottin, not bad, would be happy if he could repeat that in the 35Km ITT.

Interesting start for us here, still all 4 TTers in the range for getting a good GC result here, hope that stays the same for the rest of the race as it is a good chance for us to score some decent points here. Good stage results so far as well with Durbo's podium and Stauff in 4th as well.
Congrats to the stage winners so far, and I hope that long TT isn't too random lol
