With the uncertainties within the Quick Step team (they still don't have sponsor for 2019) the riders are considering their options as it's unknown even if the team will be on the peloton next year at all. Much like BMC's situation - when CCC arrived, many of the riders have already moved on except for GVA of course

Actually, Patrick Lefevre said he has the budget to continue the team for another season without a title sponsor, just that it would go by the generic name and logo of Wolf Pack.

It's a sorry state of affairs for cycling when one of, if not the, biggest and most successful cycling teams of the last 10/15 years can't find a sponsor.

Someone will come in at the last minute no doubt, like Tag Heuer at BMC.

Enric Mas to Team Sky?

But what if this budget isn't enough to cover the wages of some top riders like Gaviria? Without title sponsor the team would have massively reduced budget. And with reduced budget you don't have the luxury to pay your top riders the money they want. QST has many top riders - Alaphilippe, Jungels, Gilbert, Viviani, Mas and Stybar. Dunno how much they earn individually, but combined could be a huge chunk of the budget. That's why Terpstra and Schachmann choose to go elsewhere (their contracts were expriring anyway). The most tricky situation is with Gaviria and Mas who are contracted for 2019, but may feel insecure due to the (possible) reduced budged and the chances the team to be competitive next year.

IMO both will stay for 2019, but may look elsewhere if the situation does not improve for 2020.

Cycling doesn't bring the ROI like other sports do - football springs to mind. Oleg Tinkoff was one of the most vocal persons about how organizers profit from broadcasting deals while the teams get peanuts of the TV revenue. If the revenue system does not improve pro-cycling will massively lag behind other sports in terms of finances

Interesting team Dimension Data is building up.

As for Gaviria going to UAE, the team's already building strong links with Colombian riders (Sergio Henao, Cristian Muñoz, Atapuma maybe) which means they are making ground for the sprinter. A bti reluctant, though, since almost every rider has been underwhelming riding for the team, but maybe the change Gaviria needs to prove he can be the dominant sprinter for the years to come (Kittel, Trentin, none of them even able to match their QST level).

Indeed it is.. I always feel sad about hearing stuff like this.
French companies seems to be more sentimental about this. Just look at FDJ, Cofidis and AG2R.

Certainly Mas doesn't have that high of a salary yet though?

Also sad to announce that Tanguy Turgis, who placed 42nd in Paris-Roubaix this year at just 19 years of age, as retired cause there was an heart malfunction found.. Sad to hear but glad it's been detected before anything very bad would happen.

Sad to see, but at 19 he still has tons of time to find an alternate path it life. As you said, it's much more important that this was caught before he pushed it too far and tragedy struck.

This news comes with a bit of an eerie irony... Jimmy Duquennoy, a WB Veranclassic rider, has passed away at 23 after suffering a cardiac arrest in his sleep this Friday...

Heart attack deaths of cyclists at the age of 20-25 begin to increase over the past few years and becomes very alarming. Something needs to be done.
