This race will favour the time-triallists, with a preference for short climbs. Not a very abundant skill-set but there are some riders that fall into this bracket for sure. Two stages for the sprinters, two for the punchers and a Time Trial bang in the middle to separate the contenders from the pretenders.
| Name | HIL | TT | STA | RES | REC | | Costa | 80 | 76 | 73 | 72 | 72 | | van der Hugenhaben | 80 | 71 | 77 | 76 | 75 | | Roche | 79 | 71 | 77 | 74 | 75 | | Dennis | 75 | 78 | 73 | 75 | 67 | | Reus | 74 | 79 | 76 | 79 | 78 | | Brajkovic | 74 | 76 | 74 | 77 | 77 | | Talansky | 77 | 72 | 75 | 76 | 77 | | Bazhkou | 75 | 76 | 73 | 75 | 71 | | Zoidl | 74 | 76 | 71 | 68 | 72 | | Kreuziger | 72 | 77 | 73 | 73 | 73 | | Bauer | 73 | 76 | 74 | 73 | 70 | | Roe | 73 | 75 | 71 | 69 | 72 | | Klemme | 80 | 67 | 74 | 70 | 73 | | Zingle | 77 | 68 | 74 | 69 | 70 | | Mugerli | 75 | 71 | 74 | 74 | 71 |
Rui Costa fits into the mold of a puncher who is good against the clock perfectly. He will start as top favourite for this race. No other puncher who is as good as the Portuguese comes close to his TT skills.
van der Hugenhaben and Roche are nearly identical riders and they are the next top favourites for the win in this race. How much their deficiencies in the TT will harm their chances remains to be seen.
The next trio of riders boast slightly better TT skills than puncher skills, but the combination means they could easily be pushing for a podium finish. Kai Reus is In-n-Out's plan B while Brajkovic will look to be on top of his game for his and his team's home race. Rohan Dennis provides cycleYorkshire the chance to pick up huge points in their promotion push from the CT. The same is the case for In-n-Out actually!
Talansky is the next rider who might live to rue his TT shortcomings, while he should be very good in the hills.
Bazhkou and Zoidl are top 10 contenders in the minimum but could be looking at a top 5 finish if the TT becomes the decisive stage.
A couple of interesting riders in Klemme and Zingle, who are very good on the climbs, but severely lack TT prowess. They will no doubt lose time on stage 3 and will hope to take time on their rivals on stages 2 and 5.
In-n-Out and Isostar actually have three riders among the favourites and will be hoping for a big points haul.
The other riders who can challenge in the GC standings are mentioned in the table above.
| Name | HIL | STA | RES | ACC | | Betancourt | 80 | 72 | 71 | 74 | | Costa | 80 | 73 | 72 | 72 | | Mohoric | 78 | 76 | 71 | 75 | | Waeytens | 79 | 72 | 70 | 73 | | Paulinho | 78 | 70 | 72 | 75 | | Roche | 79 | 77 | 74 | 71 | | Zaini | 80 | 74 | 65 | 70 | | van der Hugenhaben | 80 | 77 | 76 | 66 | | Klemme | 80 | 74 | 70 | 66 |
A strong puncher field means that we might get a treat of attacking riding on the slopes. Costa, once again, shines among the contenders, with Betancourt likely to be his biggest challenger. Zaini, van der Hugenhaben and Klemme are extremely strong on the inclines, but their lack of acceleration may harm their chances of getting away from the others. Mohoric, Waeytens, Paulinho and Roche are similar riders and it is very difficult to come up with a ranking for them.
| Name | TT | | Robert | 79 | | Reus | 79 | | Mottin | 79 | | Tennant | 78 | | Dennis | 78 | | Hofer | 78 | | Sterbini | 78 | | Archbold | 77 | | Bodnar | 77 | | Laizer | 77 | | Kreuziger | 77 | | Boaro | 77 | | Bialoblocki | 77 |
The TT field is dominated by CT teams with Sterbini perhaps the only rider from a PCT team who is likely to make a podium push. The TT result will likely decide who gets the leader's jersey after stage 3 and could become very important in the final standings. The relatively longer distance means that punchers who can't do TTs well will definitely lose time.
Robert, Reus and Mottin are inseparable and start as top favourites. Along with Reus, Dennis is another GC candidate who will look to make a big impact on this stage.
Other contenders for a good TT result are given in the table above.
| Name | FLA | HIL | SPR | ACC | | Kupfernagel | 74 | 64 | 80 | 80 | | Scully | 74 | 67 | 79 | 80 | | Moser | 72 | 67 | 80 | 79 | | Matthews | 75 | 64 | 79 | 79 | | Hayakawa | 73 | 64 | 79 | 79 | | Pelucchi | 74 | 68 | 79 | 77 | | Chen | 74 | 63 | 79 | 78 | | Lavoine | 73 | 60 | 80 | 78 | | Thorsen | 61 | 54 | 82 | 85 | | Salleh | 70 | 59 | 80 | 80 | | Soupe | 72 | 66 | 79 | 77 | | Manarelli | 72 | 59 | 79 | 79 | | Mezgec | 71 | 67 | 79 | 77 | | Vingerling | 71 | 61 | 79 | 79 |
While the sprinter field is not the strongest, there are a lot of similar sprinters on the startlist which makes it a tough call to decide who is favourite. There are enough hills on the sprint stages to tire out the pure sprinters. This will give an edge to those who are better capable of negotiating the climbs. The attritional nature of the profiles will mean riders with low energy stats are likely to get into trouble.
Kupfernagel, Scully and Moser look to be the best equipped to handle the profiles and hence, be freshest when the sprints come around. Matthews boasts the best flat stat of the bunch and we can never count him out in these kinds of profiles. Despite being some of the fastest in the race, the support stats of Lavoine, Thorsen and Salleh might be their downfall.
The other sprint contenders are mentioned in the table above.

Rare to see a C1 race where the CT division presents such a challenge, a few of the CT teams could score really well here and greatly enhance their promotion pushes.
Hopefully Zoidl has a good race for us, I'm not sure what to expect out of him as there are a lot of strong punchers here, so hanging on in the hilly stage could be tricky, but with most of them being fairly weak in the TT's if he can survive both Hill stages in the bunch there's no reason why he can't top 10 - top 15 the GC unless the TT randomness strikes him down badly.
Salleh is only expected to contest the sprints, we aren't going to set a target on how he does in them so he has no pressure. The whole reason behind bringing him here is to get a rough idea of how he would fair if we were to promote.

Go Isostar (and anybody else who will beat that ridiculous CT startlist )!

Happy to see such a competitive C1 race, hopefully the CT GC teams can step up and take a few points away from the big boys. Moser as one of the best rated sprinters is good to see; I look forward to his season best finish of 40th that'll hopefully come in the first flat stage.
Thanks for the preview.

Rather strong field given the ongoing Denmark. As with that one, we lack a good TTer that's good in the hills, so can't expect too much. Hopefully an aggressive race for us.

A few former riders to cheer for: Scully/Matthews for the sprints, Dennis for the TT and hopefully GC as well. Not sure if the early hill stage will screw his chances though. Would be cool to see him hang on with the best.. quite a promising race for CT entries In-n-Out and cycleYorkshire in particular. This can turn into a big race for them both.
Rooting for Costa as well. After his bad luck in South Africa, it would be good to see him achieving something good here.
Thanks for the great preview!

Despite being a C1 race I was expecting a stronger startlist.
On paper Rui Costa is the main favorite, although in reality it does not seem to me that this is so. taking into account what happened in Norway I do not think that stage 2 and 5 produces significant differences for the final classification.
And for once I loved watching my team build a sprint train for Kupfernagel, Bauer and McEvoy have what it takes to put Kupfernagel in the right place.

Hoping that Zingle and Le Gac will be able to put up some sort of fight here and maybe even in the sprints?

Talansky has been performing fairly well this season, above my expectation at least. He's got a decent opportunity here, not amongst the top favorites so hopefully the AI will try and get him moving and he can hold on with the TT.
Souper Soupe can sprint, but i'm not expecting much from him really. And otherwise it's basically XP gathering.

I hope Waeytens, Pelucchi and even Cerny make the right calls to see who leads the team on what stage. The TT is too long for any GC ambitions though.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Home race! It was a tough choice to leave Brändle home, and looking at how Denmark turned out maybe the wrong choice. Still, we are riding here with a wide Slovenian squad that has plenty of scoring potential, with Brajkovic in first line. Go Lime!

Hmmm, this is another big race for us here but the placement of a relatively tough hill stage before the TT may stifle my chances here a bit. Can't really see anyone other than Costa winning this, but I hope that Dennis can finish around the top 5 and get a solid podium/win in the TT.
Good luck here people

Goona be interesting to see the CT vs PCT battle, specially in the TT.
All I can hope is for a good TT by Mottin or another surprise by Laizer like in Bayern, or Claerebout/Uwizeyimana to be in top shape and maybe fight for a top 15/20
Other than that, get in the breaks

TT is rated as flat, but it clearly looks pretty hilly. Hopefully that will improve Zaini's chances, but not being rated as a favourite is a bit worrying. Hopefully he can snag a decent result here.

I didn't come to this race, since I can't put in a good TT ... but really think Dennis and Reus have to be the favorites for this one. Neither hilly stage looks difficult enough for them to be dropped and so I think the TT will be the deciding part.
