San Marino Hill Classic
Welcome to San Marino for the second edition of the San Marino Hill Classic! Last year a fast start meant a tired peloton were unable to chase down the early break, with Moris Possoni taking the honours. He won’t line up again though, however second place Haavardsholm will.
The riders will take on 187km over a climbing heavy lap course through the city-state. As the race name proclaims, it’s suited towards puncheurs, although it is still tough enough that a few climbers have decided to come along to try their luck:
Favourites: Puncheurs | Hl | Mo | ACC | Climbers | Hl | Mo | ACC | Chaves | 79 | 76 | 72 | Solis | 60 | 79 | 67 | Boily | 78 | 76 | 74 | Panayotov | 72 | 78 | 72 | Roux | 78 | 65 | 75 | Rujano | 70 | 78 | 70 | Kratochvila | 77 | 76 | 64 | Bardet | 74 | 77 | 75 | Bratashcuk | 77 | 71 | 67 | Battaglin | 72 | 77 | 70 | Pellaud | 77 | 65 | 70 | Khripta | 75 | 76 | 69 | Diggle | 77 | 65 | 70 | De Marchi | 74 | 76 | 71 | Cunego | 76 | 77 | 70 | Koshevoy | 73 | 76 | 69 | Rodriguez Galindo | 76 | 74 | 67 | Baltazar | 71 | 76 | 69 | Wahyudi | 76 | 72 | 67 | | | | | Nzeke | 76 | 72 | 68 | | | | | Othman | 76 | 68 | 76 | | | | | Hugentobler | 76 | 68 | 76 | | | | | Lietaer | 76 | 67 | 71 | | | | | Rybakov | 76 | 65 | 72 | | | | | Vichot | 76 | 65 | 80 | | | | | Gilbert | 76 | 65 | 69 | | | | | Passalacqua | 76 | 63 | 69 | | | | |
Chaves is the best pure puncheur in the race and can climb to back it up if that matters, making him the outstanding favourite for the race. He’ll have some tough competition though, especially Boily is of similar capacities to him and the Canadian is a big threat to the Colombian.
The best outright puncheur may be Roux and with Diggle and Nzeke he’ll have some great support, a possible weakness for him could be climbing, but that hasn't hindered him so far this season.
Another team with many strong options is home team Sauber, the San Marinese team has a trio of Wahyudi, Othman and Hugentobler and this triple threat certainly has the opportunity to contend, they also bring Austrian Zoidl, who is not a bad climber.
As well as Cunego who lacks a little in the hills but is better on the climbs and could provide an alternate option. Otherwise Kratochvila is also a puncheur who fits a similar template but perhaps lacks the punch to contest with the very best.
Other puncheurs that pose strong threats are puncheurs with good climbing legs like Bratashcuk and Rodriguez Galindo and of course Arthur Vichot with his brilliant punch could steal the win.
On the flip side we are obliged to mention the climbers who have come here in the hopes of a tougher race, despite the course being more suited to puncheurs, Solis is the best climber, but really seems to lack the punch to take on short hills, so perhaps Panayotov and Rujano are more interesting options if a pure climber happens to take it, as both are very strong in the mountains and not so bad in the hills.
Bardet however is the stronger puncheur of the pure climbers though and with a team containing Battaglin, Ruijgh, Costa and Wyss, Phillips are actually interesting any way the race plays out.
Finally Telia present Khripta, De Marchi and Haavardsholm, with two climbers and a pure puncheur they also present an option for any way the race could turn out.
If last year is anything to go by, no doubt we’ll see an exciting event when we see you tomorrow for the San Marino Hill Classic!

Gotta be the first time a Xero rider wears the number one? Hope that Roux can live up to the expectations there. No VDH makes things easier (especially as looking at that profile it'd be right up his alley). I think the long climb gives Chaves and Boily the advantage, especially I think the latter could really kick off here but Chaves should win it. We're aiming for the win but top 3 is more realistic. Krato was strong in Cuba and should give In-n-Out some points even if they don't have VDH. Philips have a strong team as always.
Thanks for a great preview trek, looking forward to the report

Didn't expect to not see In-n-Out here, although it makes sense if vdHubenhagen run out of RD, although this race should suit him perfectly
Anyway, this doesn't change our goals for the race, with a top10 being a clear objetive. I really really hope of a great day of Cunego, as this is one of the most suiting hilly classics for him, as also Gilbert loses his great advantage of having a super flat stat, as there's no flat in the race
To me it's Chaves race to lose. Great preview trek! Everyone stepping their game with the previews lately

Well we got the climbers list packed . Obviously we're hoping for a hard race, Rujano doesn't have punchy legs but a constant grinding race should put him in a good position. Although we've already been awarded with the last dossards so that's not motivational at all.
Chaves and Boily are the big favourites, Cunego has been riding strong and I wouldn't be surprised to see Bardet also fighting for the win.
Thanks for the preview trekbmc! Hope it's an exciting race.

They are here with Kratochvila leading. Still surprised that Hugh is not there.
Not happy with Xero leaving Bennett at home, could've been a nice gamble. Mountain stat seems like it may provide some influence. My bet is on Boily, though I also fancy a throwback victory for Cunego. And I like the choice of Bardet here a lot, he could be a surprise rider.

Unfortunately, I really didn't pay enough attention as to which hilly races he attended Also post-Gisborne a bit annoyed I didn't do my plan B and let him have a go in the hills more and sacrificed Langkawi, then he would've definitely come here

Interesting not to see VandeWhatever here. Though in fairness I didn't send much of a squad either outside of Chaves while the rest of my team is back in Vancouver. Still have to like my chances, actually think I like that Xero has the #1 jersey and likely is the team most required to do the chasing and work. Obviously though need a great result here from Chaves or this will be considered a failure.

Not a race that will decide the outcome of the season, but should be fun to watch nevertheless. This should be a perfect race for Chaves and Boily but the unknown MO/HI ratio makes Roux the biggest question mark to look out for. |

A very important race for us, if Bratashcuk can do well here, this month may be very good for is, if not we only got Langkawi and may face falling further back in the standings.
Thanks for a perfect preview.

Something similar to what we've achieved in the other hilly classics is all I ask for.
Thanks for the great preview trek The fact that our whole team was mentioned must be a rarity

Thanks for the fantastic preview, trek! We've been spoiled with the last several previews across the MG.
Vichot should be stronger than his hill stat here, if Haavardsholm's performance last year is anything to go by. We're hoping that the mountain stat doesn't have too much to do with this race (it shouldn't looking at the gradients involved). Anything that ups our pprd at this stage is a win, so hoping for around 29 points, aka a top 5 plus Hollenstein or Gradek chipping in with minor points.

Reckon this is one of the hilly races most suited to Boily (and RG) with good hills and downhill capabilities, and no need to worry about flat. If mo stat comes into it in part by say 20-30% would be even more ideal! Not been many outings for our puncheur unit thus far, but Boily started to show some form in his two races in late February after an underwhelming debut on the first day of the season. vdH absence means that anything less than a podium really has to be considered a let down. Fingers crossed!

Surprising result. Always good to see a good result from a Norwegian rider though.

Well I'm not surprised at all the break took it, I was praying that someone would get in but no luck.
Surprised that Rujano was 16th in the peloton, he could have actually scored some points if it wasn't for the break. A single point we gained, let's hope for better luck in Langkawi.
Congratz Tamijo!! And really great report trekbmc!

Dammit that was a terrible race for us especially as Roux proved himself the strongest favourite. Congrats to those teams with a nice little surprise there Thanks for a nice report trek, and screw PCM.
