Interlagos Grand Prix

Category: HC171,6 kmterrain: bumpy Brazil

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/hc/hc_igp.png

We are finding ourselves together in Interlagos, Brazil, South America, for this day of PCT racing. The course to ride is the Racing Circuit of Interlagos, especially famous for it's Formula1 history. Felipe anyone?

Well, if you follow the Formula 1 you know that this is not one of those pan-flat races, but that it goes fairly up and down all the time. So on the slightly over 170km we will face quite plenty of meters climbed here, and this will hurt the pure sprinters. Still we have to expect a mass sprint when the black-n-white flag is swung on the finishing line.

Neither of the former two winners are here. Both Nolan Hoffman (2015) and Jan Dieteren (2014) decided to go elsewhere for this. Still there is a pretty much open race waiting for us, which will be very interesting as pretty few of the top sprinters found their way to Brazil: Let's have a look at the favourites tableau!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Impey74738081pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Aregger73717877
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Haussler73708076pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Harrison72677881
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski73588077pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Gatto71747872
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boivin74707980pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/san.png Andriato71647876
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho72657980pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Park70637877

Looking at these we have pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nns.png Vantomme as the straightout favourite, being superior to his opponence by 2 sprint points. There are a couple of problems waiting for him though: Leadout, Hill stat and team strength.
Starting with the hill stat we have a very interesting situation with a split story. We have some high weigth sprinters in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nns.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski and
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho that could challenge for the victory. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/san.png Andriato and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Park are more names to mention here.

But then there are some sprinters capable of a faster pace, to start with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.pngDaryl Impey. He might be the strongest challenger, also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Haussler and a strong pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boivin from WT with great support could come this way. But don't count out the Vontobel duo pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Aregger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Gatto in a tough race.

If you are looking at the leadouts of these teams the strongest might be WT team RBC. Most likely they'll compete against VisitUkraine and Netia on a calmly raced day.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Vastaranta73767578pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Ayoune7166777575
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bellis75787475pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Canelon7557768174
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Cerny70737377pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nns.png Franczak7263767676

An interesting scenario could also be the influence of the downhill stat, if the sprint is started early. This would suit pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Haussler the most out of the formerly mentioned names. But not only the full result, especially final leadout duties could be influenced by that, and there it's interesting to have pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Ayoune for Eritel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nns.png Franczak for Netia. An interesting combination of acceleration and downhill is also offered by the Venezuelan sprinter pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Canelon.

If the pace goes even higher we should have the even more punchy guys on our list. Beneath the formally mentioned pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Impey and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Gatto there are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Vastaranta and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bellis to mention alongside outsider pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Cerny. These are specialist if the bunch is slightly reduced and the race hurts the legs.

The more this pain increases the more hopes do the real puncheurs have. And we have a lot of these here.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb_swi.png Wyss7275687576pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot7076668073

Standout man is of course pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wha_ger.png Flügel, who also offers a great DH and a decent sprint. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Cunego also is a very strong man, but it's a little bit strange to see him here as the mountain stat shouldn't have any influence. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Waeytens is another strong puncheur. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wha.png Zingle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb_swi.png Wyss could benefit from their great acceleration and allround skillset here. Speaking about acceleration we have to speak about pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot, who might be a decent outside bet from the WT.

Finally we can talk about the flat specialists with the biggest chances here:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Summerhill7873707373pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/sva.png Baugnies7872657365
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dzamastagic7870767866pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/sva.png Langeveld7672637376

First of all we have the cobbled machine pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Summerhill, who has a strong skillset for every situation with him. Maybe an alliance with the Strava boys could help, who both could rip a race apart on the flat if winds are turning up or attacks are possible. And finally we have pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dzamastagic. He would very much benefit from a clearly reduced bunch sprint, but even more he would like to coorperate with other attackers on good flat stats. But would they want to ride with a great sprinter like he is? Let's see!

Full startlist:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Interlagos/Startlist.jpg

The final option is of course a breakaway. Sprinter teams are not looking too strong, and with the success of Dieteren 2 years ago we have seen that this is very much possible. Numerous WT teams are here only to spread into the break and hope for success. We of course can't name any favourites for a breakaway win, but the early stages of the race will give us a clear vision. Hold your breath for hard fights for the break of the day!

And even more, prepare yourself for an exciting race here in Interlagos!

Hmm, did I not send a sprinter here? I'll have to check on monday, but I would be surprised if I didn't send one here cause it's a goal for me.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Your sprinters could be at Dutch Food Valley Classic? At least that's what I would guess. Maybe that's your goal race instead too?

Cunego had 2 unused RDs. Figured Interlagos would be funny Pfft

If the racing would be calm I feel Ulanowski would have a decent chance at getting a train, and then Polivoda should be a rather good lead-out on such a race. If the racing is tougher Polivoda may have a shot at a good result himself.

Probably made a mistake in my file, carry on Wink

So we need a special race here, dropping some sprinters would be great, but I guess our best shot is a breakaway.

Huh, strange I don't have Modolo here, again, since the race would be pretty puurfect (should have chosen less stage races but his recovery is killer). But well, guess I thought that Langeveld & Baugnies would be fun enough here.

Vantomme best sprinter! Grin Still really risky, with Sobota at Dutch Food Valley, so our lead-out is very weak, just Franczak, Pierzga and Reckweg plus some puncheurs/climbers who won't help much. Which makes me very worried that this could go poorly.

Thanks a lot for the preview Croatia! Grin

We would have a pretty solid team here, on paper. Therefore its a small bummer not to be present, although Kump havent exactly overachieved in similar classics like this earlier in the season.. Pfft

Impey would be my guess here.

Wow, another amazing, detailed preview written, big thanks croatia!
Aregger should be able to give it a good fight for the top spots. Think we have a well-suiting team signed in, hopefully able to form a train... or at least drop our captain behind a promising rear-wheel (e.g. like Impey's).

Luis Leon Sanchez
My whole team here is capable of doing something from the breakaway as they all have decent hill stats. Delio Fernandez also has the potential to fight in a reduced sprint. Ideally we'd be visible in this race but can't expect too much.

This terrain seems pretty good for Bellis, plus Gallopin and Opie look like they could be useful here based on previous results. However, that's presuming it comes down to a sprint - perfect course for a break to succeed.

I'm giving Coutinho a chance to make himself shine. A top10 is the goal, but I'd like to see him fighting for podium honours.

There seems to be a clear favourite in Vantomme, let's see if he's up to the task.

Thanks for the comprehensive preview, Cro, looking forward to the report!

I'm not sure what to think here, Haussler may have a chance to win but will not have anyone in the team able to help in the sprint...
Still I can not think of a favorite because I can not see beyond a break to win

Finally racing again, hope that the race become a hard one! My only chance

Ulanowski was always expected to struggle here, and 8th is still a good result! Polivoda though, amazing stuff from him! My team seems to be getting good results whenever the train fails completely.

On the race outside of the sprint: Cunego strong, very strong. Randrianambinina maybe ever more impressive! Who would've tought we would see the Madagascan champion leading the peloton that late in a race? Smile

Nikolaev and Konovalovas also did their jobs pretty much as expected.

Fantastic report!

Well, there goes my goal. Only myself to blame though, so thanks for the report!

Yes! Vantomme putting in a great sprint to win! Grin All thanks to Franczak though, really pleased with what he did in the finale. Smile Don't even care about the result of Dutch Food Valley now, really pleased to get a win! Grin

Congrats to Prio though who probably got the most out of this race and thanks for the fantastic report Croatia! Smile

Great report.

Wonderful to see the UAE-champion show his jersey and great to see Breschel with a strong sprint - he just chose the wrong train, but tbf I hadn't expected Karcher to fade like that in the finale so that's just bad luck for Matti.

Congratulations yourself, mate! Vantomme came here to win and he delivered just that!

Astonishing result for us. I was only hoping for a good placement from Coutinho inside the top10, but having him and Carvalho break into the podium is a very lucky outcome.

Intense report until the very end. Thanks for that, Cro!

Thanks for the report croatia. Can't say much about my team, an attack would have been nice but can't have it all.
