tl;dr - It's complicated The effect in 3D race mode is the most commonly questioned part. My opinion is that it does not have an effect on the Human player in 3D race mode and that it's effect on the AI is related to red-bar decrease time.
In Quick-Sim it certainly has a big influence on whether a rider will be in the breakaway for the day.

This has been tested and re-tested many times before (last time in Kentaurus' tests and trials thread) and turns out that this widespread belief is not true. As far as I know, it sort of affects the frequency of the attacks of a rider but doesn't affect the red bar nor the yellow.

Yeah, based on those tests, the fighter stat does nothing for a human player. Silly really - I'd rather the stat was used for something more useful and the riders given a simple "yes/no" characteristic for being an attacking rider or not. Or they could do it in the form if a rider personality characteristic. The Football Manager "Preferred Moves" thing might be good for this game, so other aspects of rider characteristics could be added.
The other weird thing about that fighter stat is that you get trainers who specialise in it - why would you want a rider to be trained up in something that doesn't affect them in your main (3d) races? Do you get scouts who specialise in it too? Can't remember.

That is not possible, as until PCM 13, red bar decrease time was directly tied to the acceleration stat, meaning that unless the fighter stat has also changed, it can't relate to that. I'm fairly sure it's also frequency of attack,

Yes, you can sign a scout specialised in "fighter". But actually it affects (besides the FTR stat) the endurance, resistance and stamina stats, those that are commonly called "backup stats".

Does the fighter training boost the backup stats more than any other training type i.e. is there a point to doing it?

Yes, each type of training gives a bonus in the training of certain stats. Fighter training, for example, is the one that gives the highest bonus to Flat training. It's also the most 'balanced' training type, it gives a training bonus for all stats except MO.
Here's a table showing what bonuses each training gives (note that a 0 doesn't mean no training, it means no bonus):
Anyone played a bit with the fighter stats in the DB's?
Are there reallly less frequent attacks in 3D-Mode?
Would it be useful for mountain stages to decrease the fighter stats?
I ask because the favourites always attack at the foot of a mountain and the rest of the field just stops all of their efforts.
Some Top 10 GC guys lose 10min+ only because they sit the stage out in the huge peloton.
If every rider gets a -15 drop, Zubeldia and Wiggins for example would be at 50 and the real fighters still in the 60s.
I'll try it now and report.
