Cauberg Classic
The famous Cauberg is back on the CT-calendar for the second time in a row, with Perikles Ilias (Magna) taking out the premier edition back in 2013. We will see a whole different bunch of favorites this year though, so there will be a new name down on the list of honour here.
We all know this climb too well, so let's keep this preview short: 189km in total and about 25km of cumulated climbing will make for a challenging parcours, in which the peloton climbs to line honours on the Cauberg.
The Startlist
The Favorites
HI | Rider(s) | | | | 78 | Mendes | | | | - | | | | | 76 | Tiernan-Locke | Passalacqua | | | 75 | Godoy | Wyss | Hollenstein | Duggan | | Bugge | Cioban | | | 74 | Geschke | Selander | Firsanov | Rosskopf | | Feillu | Sarabia | Toribio | | 73 | Marentes | Parisien | Pozdnyakov | Rosa | | Bochman | Fernandez | Vink | |
Mendes tops the list of favorites, as to be expected. With also some strong riders as his support, Bank of Ireland is certainly the team to lose this race. Mendes though showed some great shape most recently, when he won the Herald Sun Tour earlier this month.
Tiernan-Locke, Wyss/Hollenstein and Duggan, as well as Godoy and one-dimensional Passalacqua should be considered serious threats for the top-favorite. Vontobel with a double-headed monster may well try to control the race like BOI will.
And of course we have Geschke: it ain't looking too bad for him to stay with the very best til the end, but it may be questioned if his sprint will be much of a factor on the Cauberg. Anyway, he is dangerous as hell. Same goes for more contenders and some strong lineups like Azteca or Dell in particular.

That's not a strong field, TTT "hill train" has a decent chance here, better than the chances in Canada were.
Afraid ACC might be a factor here though.

How about Pozdnyakov winning again? Wouldn't that be nice?
Yeah, finally some optimism again for me. Once again two options, hopefully bringing me another victory.

Cioban/Sarabia did ok in Canada so I'm slightly optimistic for this one

This, Yekaterinburg and our home race in Züri are the last chances to score big. Expect nothing less than top 5th in each of it.
Reto Hollenstein is still feeling a little uneasy, but luckily he was just diagnosed a dyspepsy back in Canada. He was released after a day care in a Montreal hospital and is eager to perform his duty.

Great that Godoy is considered a top favourite, without doubt he has mostly underperformed this season, so he is due a top top result, if he could pull a podium out of the bag here that would be fantastic.
If the race isn't selective we do have Borges, capable of putting in a great performance with ACC in abundance. Looks like it could be an unpredictable one, compared to other hilly races. |

Maybe I'll get in the Top 25 or so, but my team is still just mediocre here.

hope JTL can do better than 7th here, he should really be one of the favourites so I hope he attacks!

Wohoo Duggan
Not a victory but doing this as an outsider is very good.
Don't really like Evonik and BoI in the mix this much, but hey, it could be alot worse.

Disappointing that the peloton failed to catch the break on a race like that, really

Meh, Mendes still chasing his first victory in a classic, now only got one left. This was definitely the biggest pointscoring opportunity of our remaining races, so not winning is slightly disappointing, but I'm not complaining about 4th, 6th and 9th.

Again Euskaltel with their breakaway luck..
On top of that all teams that Siam Cement is in fight with for promotion scored well. |

Euskaltel-Bavaria Continental Team with ANOTHER breakaway win in a c2hc race. They must have scored about 75% of their total season points, maybe more, from breakaways, early ones at that.
Agree with SN, terrible gut-wrenching AI once again... In reality a break like that would never hold off the favourites they would be dead on their feet after such a ride, let alone be able to ride quicker than many of the favourites in the last 10 kilometres ..... Stupid.
A real shame for me as Bonsucro have, comfortably now, lost more points than we have gained from our breakaway wins. |

31th is a lot worse than expected, or hoped. You'd expect either Firsanov or Pozdnyakov to do anything, but this is just plain rubbish.
At least my team is consistent. Disappointing it's because of underperformance though
