Tour des Pays de Savoie
Yet another meeting of climbers after last month's Sibiu Tour and Cartago - Irazu: the first edition of the Tour de Pays de Savoie is a pure climbing festival!
The tour kicks off with a hilly stage, which looks quite mountainous and does also feature a short, but steep hilltop finish. It may suit both climbers and puncheurs.
The further three stages are made for pure climbers though: on second day, the riders face the "Plateau de Solaison" as a summit finish - 12.4km length, 8.3% average, 15% max.
Also the third stage does feature a tough mountaintop finish with the "Valmeinier" 12.5km length, 8.1% average, 11.8% max.
The tour concludes with a rather short stage and a less challenging summit finish, though (again) offering the climbers chances to attack.
The Startlist
The Climbers (and Puncheurs)
Climbers | | | Rider | MO | HI | Úran | 82 | 74 | Brajkovic | 81 | 76 | Pozzovivo | 81 | 77 | Kiserlovski | 80 | 75 | Nazaret | 80 | 71 | Marquez | 80 | 71 | Duarte | 80 | 68 | Samwel | 79 | 70 | Cataldo | 78 | 75 | Berhane | 78 | 75 | Panayotov | 78 | 72 | Marzano | 78 | 73 | Karpets | 78 | 73 | Nerz | 78 | 72 | Serpa | 78 | 69 | Stetina | 78 | 67 | Augustyn | 77 | 75 | Topchanyuk | 77 | 73 | Schwab | 77 | 72 | Efimkin | 77 | 72 | Ardila Cano | 77 | 71 | Maillet | 77 | 70 | Ndbri | 77 | 69 | De la Fuente | 76 | 75 | Nieve | 76 | 73 | Rodas | 76 | 71 | Gadret | 76 | 72 | Elissonde | 76 | 72 | Puncheurs | | | Lloyd | 73 | 76 | Serry | 73 | 76 | Hategeka | 72 | 77 | Barrio | 70 | 79 | Kelderman | 70 | 77 |
If there's any question, how strong the (P)CT's climbers are... here you go: the startlist is as packed as a C1-race could be. 23 teams did take the chance to participate and it's an impressive accumulation of mountain goats (16 riders with at least 78 MO says it all).
It's also yet another meeting of those three, who were so impressive in last month's mountain races: Úran (Cartago-winner), Pozzovivo (Sibiu's 2nd) and Brajkovic (Sibiu's 4th) should be the three to beat here.
Followed by bunch of premium climbers like Kiserlovski, Nazaret, Marquez and Duarte, this is already seven possible top-favorites. Pozzo and Brajkovic as the best puncheurs amongst them: they will definitely aim for the first stage already..
Too many names to mention all further GC-contenders. Make your own pick, choose your favorite, guess the hilly stage's MO-HI-ratio and have fun following!

Lol
Some field, considering C1 race especially. Bit worried about stage 1 for Marquez, hopefully Serry helps him well. Other than that anywhere between 7th to 4th would be alright and coming close to a stage win with his acceleration. That is if he does well on stage 1.

Breakaway please... Kononenko and/or Vrecer would be riders I'd expect to see on stage 1, Topchanyuk later on when he's way behind.

Hope for an attacking Pozzovivo already on the first stage. It looks hard enough for him to win it, and if he can get some seconds on Uran, we might be able to hold on till the end.
Looks like a promising race, but Uran and Brajkovic has been trouble for Pozzovivo before.

Well.
Setting a specific GC goal is useless, everything from 5 to 25 is possible. What matters is scoring better than our direct opponents with similar leaders as always.
Let's keep it realistic, getting white after stage 1 with Kelderman and Nerz taking that over from stage 2 onwards to the end to make it a clean sweep would be nice and looks achievable.
It's against Berhane and Topchanyuk for Dominik, no further competition for Wilco early on.
Obviously for the sake of both of my leaders, I guess a low stage 1 ratio.
Up front, everyone 80+ but Pozzovivo, Nazaret or Kiserlovski is fine with me.

Yeah, I guessed right by not to sending Abal or Plaza here.
Crossing my fingers for a good stage from Barrio to lead things off then both Serpa and De la Fuente to get inside the top 15.

I hope Uran can get a podium this time around (something he hasn't been able to get in a stage race yet). Should bring some good racing.

Have you seen the number 51? I think it goes without saying who will win this race, should really be drunk to send Kupfernagel for this race
Now more seriously it will be hard to do better than a top15 so I hope my team decides to participate in the breaks, as this can help save this race. Brajkovic or Pozzovivo for the win.

Cruel and unusual punishment being meted out here - thought he has been one of the better PCT sprint point-scorers so far this season. Come on what has he done to piss off his team manger this much, crash the team car?

Oh gosh, i am glad i avoided this race with Popovych, who would be around 15th in GC again with such a shiny startlist.
Good luck to all, i think this one will be between Brajko and Pozzo, with Uran again missing that GC podium.

Pozzovivo winning would prove me right that I wanted him for the Pro Tour.
Well Stevenag forced me to do different. Can't complain so far though. |

I expected a top 5 for this race but seeing the startlist with a top 10 I would be happy. Also I expect some residual points from Nieve.

Crazy startlist! Duarte is capable of a top 5 if that first hill stage won't favor the better punchers too much. A top 10 would also be satisfying, though.
Looking forward to read the reports, tsmoha!
