Renewal plan:

First order of business is to discuss the contracts of our riders. Some has gotten too old, and some will not be as important on a higher level.

This is our plan rider by rider:

Marco Marzano - Renew
Michele Scarponi - Huge wage dump or release
Vojtech Hacecky - Renew
Klaas Sys - Renew
Emanuel Kiserlovski - Could be released
Manuele Mori - Release
Francesco Failli - Renew
Francesco Lasca - Renew
Mauro Da Dalto - Release
Massimiliano Maisto - Release
Pierre Paolo Penasa - Renew
Davide Appollonio - Renew
Mirko Trosino - Release
Giuseppe Fonzi - Renew

The priority for the next transfer window is a one or two sprinter capable of winning on this level, and if there is enough money left, a better climber than Marzano.
We are also looking to keep up the Italian focus, meaning we should not sign more foreigners than needed.

We'll be seeing a bit of each other in the upcoming season!
I look forward to more Marzano vs. Rohregger battles, though they might not be for the GC in the PCT!

Good luck!

Avin Wargunnson
Good luck in transfers and 2014 mate, our partial italian focus that should be rather growing will see us meeting at some point of transfers for sure. Even more when we are both looking for same type of riders. Grin
I'll be back

Suicide watch 2014

Life is starting to get really frustrating at the Kappa-HQ. Not one of our intended targets got home. Not one of our intented backups for our intended targets got home. And even the desperate "at least do something"signings is failing. We are at the moment left with 10 riders, where very few is capable of doing anything without support wheels.

Our fantastic plan to sign a world class sprinter has backfired into oblivion, and at the moment our best sprinters is at best capable of being in front enough to watch the best PCT-riders fight for victories. Some team captains are really needed in any area, and at the moment we are willing to pay pretty much anything up to and including sexual favors.

On the more positive side, we can welcome two new riders.

Santo Anza is a decent domestique in the hills. He is old enough to be my grandfather, and has no way of winning any races, expect from breakaways. Even so, he is still our best hill rider at the moment, and might end up racing for himself.

Claudio Cucinotta is a good signing for 50k. He is a decent sprinter, who at least should be able to fight for some top 10s. He would be a brilliant lead out for the top quality sprinter we was supposed to sign, but as he does not seem to want to come he might have to end up doing it himself.

Cucinotta clearly is a top class sprinter. He delivered big times with a stage win in last years criterium. Grin

Kappa continue to sign mediocrity

Some new signings was announced today, the team is still missing the leaders, but for now we have some extra team mates to fill out the squad. As a team consisting of 8 riders before the transfer window started, we really needed to fill out the squad. Todays riders are as following.

Michele Scarponi
Last years big star is resigned, this time as a complete domestique. Is decent enough in both hills and mountains to be of some help in hard stages, but will not have any possibility of doing anything himself.

Gabriele Bosisio
A tiny bit better than Scarponi, but more or less the same rider. The two will be used as team mates all season, in what is most likely the last season for both of them.

The team is still not nearly good enough, but we are still more optimistic than before. Now the backbone is starting to form, and we need to sign some winners.

Pozzovivo is buying a private jet

Two new signings is announced today. One big one, and one so small, i actually forgot about him yesterday.

Domenico Pozzovivo

The big star of the team. With a ridiculous wage of 940k, Pozzo will be one of the absolute biggest earners in PCT. His climbing skill will also make him one of the best in the division. He is really close to the best in simple climbing skill, and his good punch will make him a handful for any opponent.

Mauro Facci
Faccis biggest strength is his lack of weakness. He is OK on the flats, OK in small climbs, and has an OK sprint. This makes him a good team mate, and also a dangerous man in any break away he might get into. He will for the most part pick up bottles though.

The squad is starting to take form

Three new riders was signed today, some of them at a higher quality then others.

Oscar Gatto

We really planned on signing a sprinter on the highest level, but as the quality of the sprinters in the PCT got higher and higher, and the available sprinters fewer and fewer, we decided to go a different route and signed Gatto. Gatto is not the fastest sprinter in the world, but with some obstacles in the course, and perhaps a somewhat hilly finish, Gatto should be able to fight for victory. There is also a really high risk of him looking better next season then he does at the moment.

José Antonio Redondo

A Spaniard in our team of Italians. Redondo will be a man to rely on for Pozzovivo and Marzano.
Good in the mountains, and a decent all rounder

Eliot Lietaer

Lietaer is a team mate of former Tim Wellens, who was absolute invisible last season.
Lietaer is a decent classics talent, but is mostly loaned in because we are then able to spend a bit more money on our last rider of the season.

I'm glad we were able to continue our partnership from last year - you did a great job training up Wellens and I hope you can do the same for us with Lietaer.

Final Riders confirmed

The rest of the 2014 Kappa - ENI team is now confirmed. The team will have a decent backbone, but lack the real captains who scores lots of points, except Pozzivivo. If we can avoid relegation this season, we should have something to build towards for next year.
The last rider in our team are the following:

Davide Viganò

Domestique on the flats, who will mostly be used early on the stages. On the positive side he has a decent sprint, if he is ever in a position where that is useful. It is not good enough to be important though.

Guillerme Blot

French rider who has his strength on the cobbles. Will work together with Sys for our team in that department. Neither has any top 10 potential, but both can get a good result if they get into breaks.

Luis Pulido

Climber from the big cycling nation of Mexico. Will work for Pozzovivo in the mountains, and has a good downhill quality that will most likely never be used.

Andrea Pagoto

Another hard worker, who will be used on the flats, and on small hills.
Is one of our best time trialers, so he will try to help Pozzovivo in that area.

START OF SEASON

We will start doing a short thought on every race before they start, five races at the time. When these five races are done, we will do the five next.
Our season start very weak, with no races for Pozzovivo, and just one for Marzano and Gatto. We might be close to the bottom in points per race day afterwards.

Down Under Classic

Leader: Claudio Cucinotta

The Down Under Classic is a flat, very short race. It does not suit our team much.
Cucinotta will be our key sprinter, but Appollonio should also be able to go for something.

Prediction:
Our team lacks the sprinters for the flattest races.
This race should also attract some of the best sprinters in the PCT. Cucinotta should be happy about a top 10.
This is no race for a breakaway either, so there is not much to get out of it.

Tour Down Under

Leader: Santo Anza

We stay in Australia, but the Tour Down Under has more hills, and we should have more hope.
Unfortunatly, we still use our b-team.

Prediction:
The Tour Down Under had to be skipped for Gatto, so we have no big chances for high stage results.
We do however have a team perfect for breakaways. If we get into the correct one, it could be interesting.

Vuelta al Tachira

Leader: Marco Marzano

Vuelta al Tachira is our first mountain race of the year. The race is long, and have a lot of flat stages.
It should mean the competition is weaker as it wastes some racedays for the best climbers. Marzano will get good team around him.
Cucinotta will also try for some good results on the earlier stages.

Prediction: Depending on the competition, Marzano should have a chance for a position between 5 and 10.
The rest of the team is not capable of much.

Tour of South Africa

Leader: Oscar Gatto

South Africa will be Gattos first race of the season. It suits him well with some uphill sprints finishes, and flat finishes after hills.
Gatto will have a team around him where there is a good hill quality, and decent sprinting.

Predicition: There is fierce competition for the uphill sprints in the PCT, and Gatto is not the best. He is however good enough to grab a stage win on a good day.

Vuelta a Mallorca

Leader: None?

Our Mallorca team is pretty weak. Both Anza and Cucinotta is in the team, but this race is not something we have big hopes for.

Prediction: We should be in a lot of breakaways. We could always hope one goes in someday.
