To be fair, compared to 2016's, this Tour is as exciting as Vuelta 2012.

I kinda liked this year's tour, it was the most exciting tour since 2011 simply because the winner wasn't far and away the best climber, Bardet, Dan Martin and Aru actually attacked Froome and generally seemed to be equal on the climbs before the last two mountain stages when Bardet and Uran still were, imo Froome would've lost it it not for the three Michal/Mikels or at least it would've come down to the wire.
At the very least, it was enjoyable to support Bardet, Aru, Dan Martin and admittedly Uran and this evenness of field in the mountains promises that 2018/19/20 could be the start of some much more exciting tours, as there are in the gaps between the different times a rider has dominated for several years.

Nah, Sky will just sign Aru, Martin, Bardet and Uran and Froome will continue to win in 18/19 & 20
People need to except cycling has changed. The days of Pantani like riders dancing up mountains are gone because there are more riders capable of riding up the mountains at a higher speed (and possibly a cleaner sport). It's simply impossible to accelerate away and make minutes of difference.
The new style is a war of attrition with the group slowly thinning out and the strongest surviving at the end. TTing will become a more key skill for the next generation and the days of pure climbers winning grand tours are coming to an end. It's the era of the Froomes and Dumoulins.

I liked this Tour but it wasn't a particular great race. If it wasn't for the odd Contador attack and the AG2R La Mondiale team action, it would have been rather irrelevant tbh. However, Bardet's team and downhill magic was superb and I really enjoyed that. Too bad that Bardet didn't take advantage of stage 15, where he could have put Froome out of contention. With Uran Uran, there is also a quite a big surprise on the podium. However I'd preferred it if Porte and Valverde stayed in the race, it'd had been even closer and probably we wouldn't be seeing Froome in yellow now tbh, although Porte was arguably the strongest stage racer this season and also Froome's best ally hehe
With Barguil, Bardet and in a few more years Gaudu, the age of true climbers is at least for France shapping up to be glorious. Add Landa to the mix who will be finally unleashed. Next TdF will be a killer, but we say that every year, don't we? As usual, I will look most forward to the Giro and the spring classics tbh, which are just more fun and way more fulfilling than the Tour.

Eddy racing like he's a youngster again. Attacking when he could win it from the sprint.

Definitely one of the most deserved stage wins this year. Eddy for Bergen?

He can have second place behind the triple World Champion.
But happy for Eddy now, totally deserved win with such a nice Tour from him, somewhat saving team DD.

Cycling has not changed, the tour de France has been formulaic when one rider dominates but in the gaps of that you get the great exciting tours, the 2007-2011 races after Armstrong and before Sky were great and if we're lucky, it'll happen again soon as Froome ages and the younger generation of Bardet, Aru and others come in.
When you talk about time trailing, Friome is by no means the first guy to win on time trials, the strategy is as old as Anquetil and riders before him have been using it to beat climbers without being pure time trialists since Vieto lost in the 20s, as Anquetil, Indurain, Ullrich (maybe Armstrong) and many others have won using the time trials, the number of pure climbers like Pantani winning the tour is very low over all time and often follows a stronger time trialists having issues like poor preparation (Ullrich when Pantani won), team difficulties (France when Bahamontes won) or doping bans (Contador when Schleck won.

from what I've heard (Radio Tour was all that was available to me) it seems like it was a good tour to watch, just a shame that the aftertaste with froome winning it is kinda sour

I really dont understand why TDF is bigger then giro and vuelta... And no, I dont mean because of the media, money and everything like that. But for many cycling fans that follow the entire season why is TDF what they look most forward to...
My favourite last 10 years or so has been the giro ,but if you ask the average guy in the street name a cycling race 99% would say the TDF ,just how it is .
Personally because i got introduced to the sport by watching TdF like i think the majority of people did. In my country they stated showing the race about 17 years ago and it took something like 10 years before they started showing the Giro and Vuelta by that time the tour was something special.
But in the last few years i preferred to watch the Giro but that's because it's allot more action in the GC. The best ones go for the Tour that's why i feel it's not as big as the tour.
In terms of stage profiles the Vuelta is the most fun to watch. But they never have the best sprinters along. The GC guys is usually a bunch of riders already fulfilled their goals for the season or crashed out of the Tour or Giro to go for the Vuelta as the last chance.

One good thing about Froome being in yellow is that he isn't allowed to use the 'should be illegal' Sky skinsuit from stage 1, as the yellow jersey must wear a skinsuit provided by ASO and made by Le Coq Sportif.
