Vontobel catching some of the Hugo Boss' leadout syndrome here - know how it feels.
Some quite 'lucky' (semi) GC-contenders lost time already and that bodes well for them attacking and getting a stage win laiter on, if they are unharmed.
Just as I say that they improve drastically, what a leadout from Gatto!
Great decision bringing Appolonio here.

Powerful sprint Seems like stage 2 was just a bit unlucky for him.
Bring on the climbs!

I have no idea what happened there, but I don't care too much - 5th and 8th on the stage and avoiding taking the lead was quite a good result there.
Ideally a break made up of riders a long way down on GC take the stage and Gallopin takes the overall lead with a group of 40 or so finishing together. Tachira has always been good to us, let's hope it continues |

Yes Appo decision justified. Now all participants with GC guy time to fill your own pants the mountains arrive and only really one or two guys are going to taste the honey.

Oh no. Having a sprinter who should really be on the podium twice in the first three stages, not even crack the top 10 ..... Ahhhhh.
Jaime Alberto CastaƱeda = Roy v2.
Oh great, another Roy. |

Yes yes. Still in perfect position. Plus we had a man in the breakaway who took both intermediate sprints. Let's hope we can increase our winnings here, though. Can't wait for the mountains! |

Magnificent! Not a textbook leadout, but the pure strength of our Italian duo amazes me.
Not long ago we were pushing hard to sell Gatto... and nearly missed some of his best race days in a Vontobel dress.
Thanks for the congratulations, guys!
Appollonio is ready to pass the leader jersey and prepares for a last rebel on stage five.
Curious how the GC fight will pan out and if Cataldo can make it a top10. With lots of talented climbers having significant time losses we may see an increased number of breakaway wins.

Davide being the Goliath here. Vontobel really coming to the forefront in this initial stages, both for lucky and unlucky reasons.
Time for the uphill sections... I was under the impression there were quite a few here in Venezuela...

Nice to see CJ Sutton finding back to the form from his glory Bay Crits dags A great start for Vontobel so far, looking forward to seeing the GC battle now. Could be crucial for the promotion hopes for Prio and that Irish team that's spelled funny

Okay sprint stages are out of the way, GC guy is still on the same time, and everyone else is several minutes back. Perfect chance for the team to get some breakaway work and not be a threat to the GC. We are set up as well as possible for the rest of this race.

Great finish for Vontobel, Appollonio never looked like losing. Very happy with 2nd place on the stage as well, Keough is riding quite well.

Didn't loose too much time! Now, to attack Rujano. I believe we can win this. |

That actually went quite well. Little disappointed that Gallopin and Sisira couldn't hang on, but that was the stage I was really concerned about Pinot doing something stupid on. Now he's up into the top 10, so hopefully he can just gain little by little and make it a top 5. |

Machado winning already on this stage I had hoped Ricco would steal time on him here to make it more exciting.
Interesting to see Meintjes this strong, might be good news for Telkom

Great report, I was on the edge of my seat for half the race
In the end, a good result, considering the hilly classification. Marquez sitting in 4th position, ready to attack the podium when the real mountains come!
A nice showing in the break, too. Perfect race so far for us! |
