The management of Tinkoff - La Datcha Team decided to take a risk and go all-in for one rider this year: Toms Skujins!
With Kritskiy gone we also had to sign some extra support for Pavel Sivakov and found Rigoberto Uran (and Wolfgang Burmann) without a contract.
So what do you guys think? Good enough to stay another year in the PT?

That is a lot of money for Skujins who didn't exactly thrive last year. But on the other hand your cobblers owe you some good results so think it is fair to say you could expect some improvement there. I think it will be close.
But if you make it through this year and can begin to train Sivakov and Vlasov then you have a nice platform. A bit of pity Sivakov and Vlasov are so similar, one as more of a MT/HI hybrid would be nice. I guess Vlasov could go down the TT path.

I agree with UU that it could be a close fight for survival. With Kritskiy gone, you probably won't be able to regularly target stage race podiums this year, which could be too many points lost. Skujins wasn't exactly a good performer last year, so the risk you're taking there is significant in my opinion.
On the other hand, Tinkoff riders have often done well in breakaways, especially in hilly stages, iirc. And with most of your riders being subtop level, you probably have to hope for a lot of such points.
Your cobblers have to deliver big time this year, and at least Appia Antica was great in that respect! Let's hope they can carry you, along with your great TT depth squad (although no top-level riders as well).
And then let's hope PCM will find some love for Samolenkov later on, you'll need his points as well!

Thanks for the input Fabianski and Ulrich Ulriksen, I think you are both right, just like baseballlover312. It will be a long and difficult season for us, most of the predictions have us relegating but I believe we can survive another year!
-baseballlover312-
I'm kind of surprised at Tinkoff this year. There have been some tough declines and retirements in recent years, and I'm not sure they've been properly recouped. In the first place, they will need to hope Tom Skujins has a bounceback campaign. He wasn't enough to keep a PCT team with a better GC guy from relegation last year, so that's not a given. Sivakov will be in that top GC tier in a few years, but for now he's a significant downgrade from 2021 Kritskiy. Speaking of the latter, the efforts to resign him deep into free agency clearly left the team in a suboptimal position.
For Tinkoff to stay afloat, they mostly need Senechal and Kamyshev to step up as formidable cobbles leaders. They will have to prove that last year's disppointments were a fluke and not the new normal. They also need Samolenkov to at least earn his wage if not overperform when possible. They have yet another TTT team - a little more top heavy than most, so maybe they'll have success there, but I still don't trust it given the competition. Vlasov should score good minor placings, and the domestiques tend to have cool energy stats, but I think there's no getting around that this team is weakened compared to previous iterations, and vulnerable to relegation.

After 12 years we finally won our first cobble race, read the full race report here.

Now that the long overdue cobble race victory is finally in the bag, two long-term goals are left to achieve:
Win a Monument: A very difficult goal, but as shown last week (Alexander Sulimov 2nd place at San-Remo) nothing is impossible.
Win A Grand Tour: We already were really close twice with Timofey Kritskiy at the Vuelta a Espana 2019 and the Giro d'Italia 2020. Both 2nd places felt like victories to us, but who knows maybe Pavel Sivakov will win it for real in the future, not very likely though.

Not so many updates unfortunately, but the ones you do create are pretty great I'll admit. It's great to follow the year by year track record.
It does come as somewhat of a surprise to me that Trofimov never won either Liege-Bastogne-Liege og Giro di Lombardia (or Milano San Remo). It's definately about time you land either a Grand Tour or monument. Quite surprise to see that you haven't managed to do so yet - also with Senechal as a top cobbler.

Recap 2022
Yesterday the second Grand Tour of 2022 (Vuelta a Espana) started in Castilla y Leon, so time for a recap up until now.
February
Light at the end of the tunnel
So, January was a pretty bad start of the season, but we're able to bounce back during the Volta a Portugal: Surprisingly Foliforov won the first stage (5km prologue) and Banaszek the fourth stage after a long 1km sprint in the wind. After 8 stages Rybalkin ended up 41st in the final General Classification, not too bad.
After Portugal we were back to underperforming big time; Tinkoff was considered to be the primary favorite at Copenhagen - Malmo TTT, but instead we were biggest disappointment of that day, finishing 9th place.
Vlasov was our leader at Tirreno-Adriatico, but he wasn't able to do much and finished the race as lucky number 13. Kind of a no show from our whole team, although Kanerva almost saved our Tirreno by getting into the Break of the Day during stage 6, but it wasn't meant to be; he finishing 2nd.
Tinkoff - La Datcha Team was totally invisible during Paris-Nice, apparently Mamykin did arrive in Nice after 8 days -> 45 riders in front of him.
Also Classique du Grand-Duché didn't go well at all; Skujins - one of the pre-race favorites - was in a really good position when going under the red kite, but somehow managed to finish 29th!?
Milano San Remo on the other hand turned out to be the light at the end of the tunnel; at the end of the Poggio Sulimov together with Mads Pedersen (Grieg-Maersk) and Artem Nych (Polar) launched an attack. The favorite teams hesitated a little bit - did organize themselves later on - but couldn't get back to the three in front. Sulimov wasn't able to win the group sprint, still second place at La Primavera was an amazing result.
Nat. | Result | Race | Uci | | 41st Rybalkin | Volta a Portugal | Stage Race | | (Foliforov Stage 1/ | | Banaszek Stage 4) | | 9th Tinkoff | Copenhagen - Malmo TTT | Classic | | 13th Vlasov | Tirreno-Adriatico | Stage Race | | 46th Mamykin | Paris-Nice | Stage Race | | 29th Skujins | Classique du Grand-Duché | Classic | | 2nd Sulimov | Milano San Remo | Monument |
May
In need of a good Vuelta
Another cobble disaster to start the month: Bad tactics plus bad luck during Cheshire Cycling Tour were Kamyshev barely made it into the top 10.
Skujins was doing ok during the Ardennes classics; just like Amstel he was able to finish 4th place at Fleche Wallone.
Liege- Bastogne - Liege on the other hand wasn't great, during Amstel and Fleche Skujins played the waiting game really smart, we tried a different tactic during LBL -> he went on the attack with 30km still to go and because of the energy spend he ended up 19th: Lesson learned.
Yatsevich was our leader for the Chrono d'Arenberg, he did his best but the 30th place was the maximum we could get out of this unorthodox race.
Samolenkov was being dropped with 30 kilometers to go during Rund um Koln and that of course killed our chances on a good result. He made it back to the pack eventually and was able to finish 16th, better luck next time.
As mentioned before the second Grand Tour of 2022 (Vuelta a Espana) has started and we definitely are in need of a good Vuelta, since all races this month (except Fleche Wallone) were really bad. Six riders who rode the Giro will also be riding the Vuelta (Uran, Mamykin, Rybalkin, Foliforov, Trakhov and Banaszek). No GC ambitions this Grand Tour -> no Sivakov (and Strakhov). Vlasov and Kanerva will complete our Vuelta squad, meaning we are going after stage wins, break aways and maybe the mountains classification.
Nat. | Result | Race | Uci | | 10th Kamyshev | Cheshire Cycling Tour | Classic | | 4th Skujins | Fleche Wallone | Classic | | 19th Skujins | Liege- Bastogne - Liege | Monument | | 30th Yatsevich | Chrono d'Arenberg | Classic | | 16th Samolenkov | Rund um Koln | Classic | | TBA | Vuelta a Espana | Grand Tour |

New Equipment 2022
We're proud to announce that our primary equipment suppliers signed a new 2 year deal with Tinkoff - La Datcha Team. Cervélo, Zipp and Catlike have been with us since the beginning and we're very happy to continue our partnership.
However there'll be some secondary equipment changes next season; the MGUCI finally will allow disc brakes and electronic shifting, therefore after 12 years riding with Campagnolo, we will ride with FSA K-Force WE Groupsets next year!
Futhermore, Prologo will provide us with their latest state of the art saddles (replacing Selle San Marco).

Recap II 2022
As stated in our first Recap we were in need of a good Vuelta and with the stage win of Banaszek (Stage 4) and Mamykin finishing 14th in the General Rankings we were happy to end the first season half in a positive way.

It's been a seemless transition from Kritsky to Sivakov and the team has gone from strength to strength very quickly

Staying Focussed 2022

With only three ProTour races - Tour of the Battenkill (Senechal/Kamyshev), Japan Cup (Skujins) and Giro di Lombardia (Skujins) - and the National and World Championships left this season, it's important to keep the motivation high.
That's why our clothing sponsor AGU already designed the jerseys for next season, to give some extra inspiration for the National Championships. Go Tinkoff!

Those are very sharp and should provide some great motivation.
Not sure if you will get that Russian TT one though, competition is likely to be stiff.
