Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/profile.jpg

The riders are ready to start this unique cobbled one day race. With the total elevation the riders face, along with the hard and long cobble sections at the end and a total of 230 km. This is a race that will test them to the fullest, let's begin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0001.jpg

The first attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Kleijn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Peters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Ballerini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0002.jpg

Unlike some other races the peloton is pretty sensitive with how many riders they're willing to let in the breakaway. After many failed attempts pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Becis are the two that manage to get away. The 5 man breakaway is done with the first climb of the day and holds a 3'30'' advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Yorkshire, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png King Power, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png MOL, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Huski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos are currently dictating the pace in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0004.jpg

The breakaway's advantage is down to 2 minutes at the halfway point of the race. Three more major climbs are on the course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0005.jpg

All the riders are starting the final climb and we see the peloton is getting ready to make the catch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0006.jpg

Following the downhill the riders hit the cobbles straight away. A 10.5 km section that they'll tackle once more later. The breakaway holds a minute advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0007.jpg

Some riders aren't wasting any time! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Garcia Cortina, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Gamper and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz have already made their move. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Debesay are trying to join them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz is the only favourite that is fully committing to this attack as he's now leading the remnants of the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0009.jpg

The cobbled section is done and it's really thinned out the race. The race favourites group now contains only 25 riders who are 39'' behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0010.jpg

30 km to go and just before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz was about to be caught, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Summerhill launches an attack followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0011.jpg

That acceleration forces a split. Most of the favourites are in the front group minus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Trentin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Neilands and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Gamper.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Debesay is now showcasing his acceleration, taking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Pedersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Per with him and catching up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Summerhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev takes the initiative to bring them back as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski is still just ahead of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski is caught just before the cobbles start again and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Per puts the pedal to the metal at the start of the section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev has done his job, he can't hold on to the favourites. 14 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Senechal now with a subtle acceleration and he has a gap! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Gerts tries to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Gerts tried, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Senechal is very strong as he's extending his gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0018.jpg

Zero teamwork among the favourites with everyone relying on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Gerts. Meanwhile has a full minute gap as he passes the 5 km to go banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0019.jpg

3 km to go. It's now or never in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Debesay's mind as he attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0020.jpg

The riders are gearing for a sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Pedersen at the forefront.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0021.jpg

But it's only a sprint for 2nd place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Florian Senechal wins the Strada Appia Antica classic after a solo move on the cobbles that no one took serious enough. We also have to mention that the Tinkoff team did a great job to set up that attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Appia/PCM0022.jpg

The riders are gearing for a sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Theuns wins the sprint for 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Pedersen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Per is 4th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Summerhill just edging out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski for 5th place.

The 2nd sprint row consists of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Polanc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Altur and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Spengler before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Zepuntke rounds out the top 10.
