In the end the stronger riders were too strong in the end.
Can't argue with that
Phinney remains as godly as ever, great start of the season for Isostar.

Hmm disappointed with Gidich's 13th place but at least he finished s.t. so can make up some places in the TT now! |

Ehhhh what Phinney? Got away with it, but was hopefully some one-off performance.

Cheeky bait in the report on Phinney Looks like all the GC contenders were well down stage wise, so I suspect conditions must have had an impact.
I was a little concerned when Wirtgen 'only' went 10 seconds faster than Gidich, but then almost everyone went slower, so all good. 3rd is a brilliant start to the season, with the U25 jersey to go with it.
Goos not quite making the Top 10 as hoped, but still his performance on Stage 2, supported by Ulissi there, then Tanfield and O'Shea today, make for a quite satisfying Teams Classification win.
Looks like a big race for MOL and ISA, with Phinney coming away with GC and Stage win as might have been expected, just not quite the expected stage.

Good start at our first PT race, i just hope we can continue like this. At first i was scared because the packed field, but at the end Tenorio did very well. Some nice depth points added too.
Thanks for the reports! |

Not sure what happened with Phinney there, but anyway a great start to the season for us and Würtz. Actually two spots down in GC compared to last season, but hard for Würtz to get much more out of a race like this. To also get Brkic in the top 20 in his first race for us is a good boost.
Congrats to Croatia on the win and thanks for the reports!

In good old fashion: the first time that an evonik rider is seen is when he's overtaken by a rider starting behind him
I've gotta say that Taaramae was shockingly bad today. Only third best Evonik rider on the day, 17s behind Navardauskas and 12s behind Tvetcov is very surprising and dropping all the way to 6th in GC behind Sepulveda and Gidich is very disappointing. On the other hand Tvetcov climbing higher than expected yesterday with a top 20 result here. But between Taaramae and Eislers i definitely left a few points on the table.
Tenorio 2nd here. As much as i dont like his skill set on a personal level, i've got the feeling he will be super annoying to Taaramae this season.
Congrats to the podium finishers and maybe even more so Scorchio for a strong race. |

While I didn't expect Hagen to hold on to his position, he lost more in the TT than I expected. Perhaps similar to Phinney the wind really got bad for them. Anyway, a nice race to test out what I can expect from the season, so far not disappointed. Now watch my riders do nothing in races where we can actually score...
Thanks for the reports redordead and congratulations Croatia!

Hard to root against Tenorio...
Wish Cattaneo didn't lose that time on Stage 2 to get a better GC result than 16th. In the end, never would predicted loanee Stepan Kurianov to be leading us in scoring after the first race due to winning the KoM competition.

Certainly hoped for some better GC results out of this race, but can't complain too much I guess, it's not a massive bag of points we lost out on. Can't remember a single time my team started the year out strong over our history, but as long as we get better from now on we're gonna be fine.
Thanks for the nice reports! Congrats to everyone who did well.

Wow that was bad. Vlatos as an early starter performed like crap and was soundly beaten by Ioannidis and Kiriakidis (who were both horrible on Stage 2), then Lecuisinier not even in top 60 despite 77TT and killer backup stats.
7th GC is OK and when the TT’ers all screwed up Coquard won the points to add 15 more points than expected. That almost covers the spots Lecuisinier could have done better.

I suppose some heavy wind has randomised it a bit. No idea why Phinney would be that low otherwise.
Schadlich did okay, had hoped for a bit more by Hepburn and in especially Sergent. But in a race where we'd basically only had high hopes for the sprint, I leave with a stage 2nd there plus a 8th in the TT. Not too bad for a start.
Thanks for the reports. Looking forward to the next. |

Good result for Canty in the TT. Too bad he didn't care about the key stage, so we didn't get much from Tasmania this year. Enger did well though and we almost entered the KoM battle.
Thanks for the reports!

Entertaining race, with a bit of suspense in the last stage. I enjoyed it and find it as a good start for the stage races season.
Congratulations, Croatia, on the win! |

5th by Gidich in the GC is an acceptable result. Nothing flashy from my team but we score very decently in this race.
Thanks for the reports and congrats Croatia! |

With a varied lineup, I was hoping for a nice U25 showing from Conci/Kämna, and depending on the intensity of stage 2, either Stüssi or Ganna showing up somewhere near the top of the rankings.
As it turned out, both of our designated leaders failed to make any sort of impression, but at least Conci got lucky with the gaps finishing in a large group, and doing a solid job in the TT to get very close to the Top 25 and add some U25 points along the way.
And in his first showing as the German TT champ, Sütterlin continues his trend of performing very well in the first time trial of the season after winning in Qatar last year, 4th is a great result looking at the randomness of the results with wind and inclines playing some part.
Overall, the points haul is reflective of the quality of our lineup here, with a plethora of super-domestiques giving it a good shot against absolute superstars.
We'll have a lot of these races this season again due to the wage/RD restrictions of Herklotz and Demare, and if we're content with a Top 5 spot overall at the end of it, this outcome is satisfying.
Congrats to Croatia for resuming your winning ways straight from the start!
And thank you redordead for kicking off the season with quality reporting.

Shame non of our riders managed to stay with the first group in stage 2. But Powless' awesome TT makes up for that.
Zero riders in GC top 15 is a shame, but five riders in top 35 is pretty nice.
Thanks for the reports!
