Well, you don't have to laugh. Here's one. Name an American Football player. Tough, right?

Well, Brett Favre, Tom Brady or the Mannings are surely names that some of us already heard.

Maradona over Pele? Ok, you could argue on that, but the point of the game is going for the answers other people will answer, not the actual facts. I also made that mistake, though, and went for the real answer (which is obviously Zico)

I knew that most people would say Pelé, but I couldn't bring myself to name him. The coward never came to Europe, and was playing for the best national team in the world.
Maradona, on the other hand, almost single-handedly won both the World Cup and the Serie A, while having an amazing goals/matches ratio in all clubs he played for, even during his tenure at Barcelona, which was regarded as a failure.
Not to mention that he was the most entertaining player to watch in the history of football, of course. Where Messi gets by mostly on quickness, Maradona had a huge repertoire of tricks and dribbles, while at the same time being just as quick.

Whereas Tom Finney was a one man team for Preston North End. Played for England and was offered a big move to Italy but turned it down to stay with the club he supported as a boy. He also ran a plumbing business at the same time and retired at 28 to focus on plumbing, what a legend! |

Attacking isn't everything. Xavi does a lot more work on defense than Iniesta. He is also a lot better playmaker. Plus Iniesta's flopping is just disgusting. To be honest they both are worse than Xabi Alonso.

How is honoring the club you support and making a career on it being a coward? Competition in South America x Europe wasn't like it is today. The best Brazilian players stayed in the country (which would remain until about the 90's), as shown by the fact that the 11 starters in the 1970 WC final all played in Brazil in that year, and if I'm not mistaken only 2 would ever play out of the country in their career. Besides, in the main three times Santos (Pele's team) played European teams (62,63 Intercontinental Cup and 68 Intercontinental Supercup), Santos beat them. And of course, he was playing for the best national team in 1970, but they played up to their status by winning most games by 2 or more goals. He also had an important role in the 58 WC, being the second top scorer at 17 years.
Nevertheless, Maradona was an amazing player and the key of his team to several titles, including the 86 World Cup (although some goals, more specifically one in that WC came in quite handy - quite typical though when you remember some water incidents 4 years later and the 78 WC almost as a whole). And indeed Maradona has an impressive goals/matches ratio, but so does Pele, with 0.92 counting only official goals and 0.94 in official and friendlies - over a total of 1366 matches, which is a lot of matches to keep such a ratio. Of course, there were a lot more goals in the games in Pele's time compared to Maradona's, some 20 years later, but then again there's a difference in their ratio which can be partially explained by this.
So, for me that makes Pele the 2nd best player ever, with Maradona being the 3rd and - as I've already said - Zico the best (I'm a Flamengo fan, so expect me to act in the same way as Alakagom-Sky, Norwegians-Norwegian riders... nah, just when joking, like now unfortunately he's not the best ever, but definitely Top 20 ).
