Ugh Roglic is having the race I wished Meintjes would ride
I'm really disappointed in losing our position in the top 10 due to what can only be described as very poor positioning in a stage I thought we'd attack rather than lose precious seconds.
Now its all in for the final few stages, the top 10 is still very much to play for even if its just a 9th/10th place finish...

Even though my team isn't doing much, I'm really enjoying this Tour de France; great reports and I like how this Tour is evolving so far.
Mamykin is riding anonymously but steady, he maybe can enter the top-20 the next four stages. Also a message for my team:
Chernetskiy you are not the designated breakawayor, I repeat, you are NOT the designated breakawayor. These guys are!!!

Congrats on the win! Another good race by Chiarello also making a huge leap in the GC.
Boily couldn't pick up the pace here, which is unfortunate, but expected. I would have preferred to see him fight for the KOM jersey though rather than keeping up for as long as possible.
His latest efforts though have finally brought him inside the top 50 GC. Hopeless result, but atleast a couple of extra points can be scored if he keeps climbing a bit.
Our goal of achieving 500 points is diminishing by the day though when we can't fight for KOM nor stageresults.

Seeing how easily Herklotz won that peloton sprint, not helping Puma chase was the right decision. On the flip side, these breakaway wins are also hurting Madrazo's stage performance points. But trying to win yellow is more important.
Tomorrow is basically the same story. Herklotz is the prime favorite for that stage so our support team should probably just save some energy. They need to be ready for the big test: I want Madrazo fighting for the stage win in stages 19 and 20.

Big win for Chiarello, what a pick-up he was for Evonik. Great job by Novak and Roglic today, we've ridden anonymous but very well thus. Berhane coming a little too close to the Top5 for my likings though, hopefully we can fend him off in the next days. Now it's Rogla and Novak to pace their efforts while Bizkarra, Calmejane, Peters and Roman to light up the race with attacks. |

Argh. This wasn`t as I wanted it.
I know, Valls was supposed to join the break but in there he shouldn`t work to allow Berhane and Galta pass Olivier...not good but hopefully their effort here will see them more exhausted in later stages. Valls up to 21st is obviously good and for the team ranking it was good of course.
Though I hope in future stages Valls can attack but without helping direct rivals too much. Or if so, then at least he should be stronger to fight for the KoM or stage points a bit more. |

Good stage by Nesset. A good group of climbers in the break, so have to be happy with 4th place. Some good stages for him to come the next days, hopefully he can get in the break on one or two of those.
I have to admire Lastra and his fighting spirit. Not much left in the tank now. KoM fight in general looks very open. Nesset is probably our best chance, but looks more likely for a rider like Galta I would imagine.
Great win for Evonik. Congrats knockout!

Chiarello looked very strong all day long and delivers in style, timing his sprint to perfection. Excellent job by him, making gains in KoM and GC as well. Would love to see him in further attacks on the next couple of days but the current GC Top 15 might be too close together to allow too strong riders into the break. Though with a weak yellow jersey team and the climbs starting immediately on the next two days, the peleton might not be able to control well who joins the break so it might be down to start position randomness who gets to join the fun
Thanks SotD, Cro & tasta!
For sure, he is having an outstanding season!

Just a pathetic grand tour again for us. Im going to lose in the GC to Chiarello again, aren't I? (Not personal btw knockout, just talking purely from a stats perspective.)
Really not sure what decides who joins the breakaway. Some teams with better GC riders still send someone every single stage. My team has so many riders that would be suitable for the break every single stage, but instead we chase the break so that our absolutely trash captain can keep his 17th GC position.

You beauty, Galta!
Very, very happy to see him join the action up front. Must admit I thought he looked good for the stage win too, but in the end, I guess all the pacemaking on the final climb took a toll. But to come away from the stage with second place is still great, especially with the GC climb too, now sitting inside the top 10. Suspect he'll drop some places on the next stages, but hopefully he can again ride aggressive and try for a breakaway on the final mountain stage, or the penultimate one, similar to what he has done in previous GTs.
Also big congratulations on the win, knockout! As Croatia rightly stats, Chiarello has been magnificent this season! |

Could be something related to pre-stage favorite list I think? In the Giro Bongiorno was often among the pre-stage favorites and there we did absolutely nothing. In other races with slightly better riders Bongiorno is more of a free rider and thus the other riders can go into breaks.
I do agree that it sucks though!

Ooooh, what a stage! Especially for UBS - could this be a relegation saver? Congrats on a great stage win at least, Bushwackers
Nesset with another good ride in the break. As yesterday, he's just on a slightly lower level than those around him, so happy with 7th. Would have liked to see him maybe try for some more KoM points, but he lacks that acceleration that for instance Smith have, so understand it also.
Some great days for Chiarello lately. Probably to high up in GC now to attack, will be interesting to see who try their luck tomorrow. Not unlikely to see Dombrowski or Morton go up ahead. Should be in for some great finishing stages.

Well, that was a quick read. No riders in the break - Skip.
Congrats to those joining the break.

The expected breakaway stage, but with much more GC impact than I would've expected. Great ride by Novak for a good stage result and also some u25-Boni. With Chiarello and Schelling overtaking Roglic though parts of me hope the breakaway riders fade massively tomorrow, while the other part wants them to be successful again. I guess the next two stages are ones for the GC men.

I really hate GTs in PCM, not only in this edition but in general and already in the last couple years.
There basically are 2 kind of teams in every GT:
On the positive side the teams with top3 riders and teams with lucky breakaways.
On the negative side basically all teams in between, mainly those with top4-8 favourites as they are too strong for breaks but too weak for big point scoring.
Unfortunate Olivier is exactly in this part and while having been close to the top5 before the breakaways started, he is now down to 12th without having lost any time to Herklotz...
Can only hope the last 2 mountain stages will now either see him in a break as well or at least see proper attacks by the favourites so that he can climb up the GC again. 12th behind 5 breakaway riders is absolutely not acceptable in our situation.
The last mountain stage usually goes to the peloton again, but tomorrow must not be a big break day as this is not ideal to allow Schelling, Berhane etc. that much time for no reason.
It`s not like my 75-75-76-77-78 mountain support train couldn`t avoid such time gap but usually for far too long the game is using riders like Boom-Vliegen-Koep-Dekker instead of switching towards Zardini-Ciccone-Valls early on. |

Holy hell, Chiarello with back-to-back great stages.

I think so too. And also those final climbs look too tough for him to stick with his rivals after how much energy these two stages must have cost him. So i suspect he will drop again in GC and KoM classification. And its still super close to the riders behind so it could be a big drop if he has a bad day on any of the two stages.
But another stage podium is great and as a minor bonus, another succesful break helps Van Stayen to stay in green too.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

I can only hope Meintjes joins the break tomorrow at this point. Glad he actually bothered to gain some time back but we now sit 15th which on the face of it is not good at all. We're still in reach of the top 10 but I feel given our GC position the best way to go about it is taking a chance that the peloton will again let the break go...

Schelling!! What a ride, one of the highlights of our season so far. Still two big mountain stages to lose some positions, but hopefully this positions him to finish well inside the top-10.
Very pleased with Abreu punching above his weight in the KOM competition so far, though it looks like those aspirations are finished.
Great race cunego. I'm definitely enjoying it, though I have benefited much from the PCM AI this time around.

We're quickly back to "normal", which had to be expected after yesterday's adventures for Galta. Seeing Chiarello active and using the opportunity to get into the top 6 and really close time wise, I'm hopeful Galta can attack again on one of the upcoming stages.
Congratulations both to Bushwackers and knockout on big rides from their best GC riders here. |
