Bouhanni won't ride MSR, as the team doesn't think he's recovered well enough after having to retire from Paris-Nice due to illness. So for Trek's joy, Christophe Laporte will lead the team in the first monument of the year

More bad news for Quick Step, after Gaviria they also lose Dries Devenyns for the classic season with a hernia. He was doing really well in the prep races so far, and with De Plus and Vakoc still injured (I think), they're running out of domestiques for the hills.

well it will only be an awful edition if it comes to a bunch sprint with some of those names like Degenkolb and Gaviria out. BUT with less sprinter's teams controlling the race it will be more exciting and again we may get a winning breakaway like last season. Even though I do expect Sagan will use his team to force a bunch sprint for this year's race

I definetely believe that Sagan will go for an attack again this year. He may end up in a trio of the exact same riders this year. He is the better sprinter of these, but needs to play it more cool and spend less energy before the sprint. He has a chance in a sprint as well, but against the likes of Kristoff, Viviani, Demare, Groenewegen, an attack looks more likely to contain a win in my opinion. |

It's a hard one. As far as I'm concerned he is the strongest rider in the peloton since Cancellara, but unlike Cancellara who could only really win MSR in an attack, Sagan has the problem of either trying to win in an attack or win in a sprint. In an attack he like Cance and like he did last year will have to do most of the work unless he goes with another fast finisher. In a sprint I believe he will beat Kristoff which leaves Groenewegn, Viviani and Demare who are roughly his equal in a sprint. Nobody recently wins MSR twice so we can also rule out Demare. I think he would beat Viviani over this distance but that leaves Groenewegn who I think will be his big rival in the sprint.
As always MSR is the most interesting monument as it's delicately poised between a sprint finish and an attack finish, even though the former is the more usual end recently.

OK, then that's a good reason why Sagan should try and hold out for the sprint.
