Curious how good Penasa can perform on stage four. Jayco just have Saber and TT-guys left and is capable wo win stage three as a team. Hoping our young Italian has a shot on wearing the best young rider jersey early.
Have a keen eye on Orange and Vesuvio, too. Manfredi and Pellaud may fancy their chances in late breaks of this Giro.
Nice preview, thanks for covering, danny!

Probably one of the weakest Movistar lineups you will see from us all year. The time has come for us to drop in the standings. Not much you can do when you only have one average GC rider (David Abal), going to need breakaway and TT points out of this one.
Otherwise, I hope we see a close overall GC fight and not just a Pluchkin domination.

Grand Tour debut for my outfit and I'm quite hyped by the start list. Most top sprinters are (not really surprising) elsewhere so Van Stayen is amongst the top favourites on quite a few stages.
I decided to ignore the mountains completely in my squad selection as I have not sent any of my so called climbers (Kern, Vosekalns & Poljanski) to fight for breakaway glory but used every line-up spot in order to help Van Stayen. His best support in Dzamastagic and Dakteris is of course here, but also Bogdanovics as an insurance in case of a crash and to raise the chance that one of Dakteris and Bogdanovics might finish inside the time limit till the Brockhaus stage. Bagdonas and especially Stoltz are here for pacing on the flats and Lindau and Smirnovs are here to help in the hills.
I'm hoping for a couple of stage wins along with the point jersey for VS where he might have a realistic shot to stop the top climbers this time around. Also a day or two in the Maglia rosa would be awesome
I see Alexandr the Great miles ahead of anybody else in the GC. It's his race to lose as only a crash can stop him.

Oh, and there isn't much reason for knockout to fear GTs and a huge ranking drop, I suspect, seeing Van Stayen is here. He should be the favourite in most sprints and claim loads of points.
This one might be decent scoring but I've got to fear the other two GTs. To quote roturn: That might be the worst GT team in MG history.
The ranking drop is still to come. Although mainly in tour and vuelta.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Quite a decent team here for the RBC boys we have two guys for the mountains in Patano and Elissonde , a sprinter in Boivon , a TT guy in Cataford and a smattering of breakaway riders in Pichon and Jensen hoping really that Pichon has a great few hilly stages as he's our best chance of a stage win from a non breakaway apart from that maybe Patano can go for the KOM |

Not ideal to have already a crash early on. Hopefully no injuries or at least healed until the 4th stage.
Weird finish as well with that split. In especially as Groenewegen went from 3rd position to dropped group! First was shocked that Groenewegen might get a train in a GT as this would be an awful idea.
Then I was more surprised to not find him in the results.
Only De Bie in first group sucks. Olivier should have been in there as well in a perfect scenario. Now opponents such as Keinath, Cattaneo and so on have gained unncecessary time.
Looking forward to the next stages. |

Holst Enger sprinting home a podium is great, and already better than expected in this race. On the other hand, Guldhammer loosing more than a minute to direct rivals like Nibali, Henao, Cattaneo and maybe even Keinath isn't great at all. I can only hope he finished the stage not injured. If he's indeed injured, it spells trouble for my top 10 goal here already, but fingers crossed.
Pluchkin with a very convincing start GC wise, but good to see also Alarcon up in the first group, as he obviously needs it considering the TTs. But having more than a minute head start to his podium rivals, is surely not a bad thing.
Congratulations, knockout! Though, by no means surprising to see Van Stayen claim the first stage, and great to see the helpers you brought make use of themselves in the leadout.
And thank you for the report, sgdanny. Just thrilled to see the Giro rolling! |

Here we go! Most important race of the season for Gazelle. Half of Madrazo's race days are here and to get back on track towards a successful campaign he needs to score at least 650 points in Italy.
I agree with the general consensus that Pluchkin should be considered the favourite, so his appearance is a shame for Madrazo. But that is most definitely compensated by the huge list of great GT riders who did not show up, like Schleck, Spilak, Tenorio, Machado, Amador, Dombrowski, Taaramäe, Phinney, Gesink, Kritskiy and Velits.
So despite the disappointing form Madrazo showed in Paris-Nice, I totally expect him to end up on the podium. Unless he gets injured in a fall of course; that would be devastating.
One of the cool things about this Giro is that the GC battle already starts in stages 3 and 4.
I don't have the strongest TTT team for sure, but with 78, 77, 77, 77, 76, 72, 71, 67 we aren't bad either and it would be awesome if we could pull off a surprise result. Because if that happens Madrazo gets the opportunity to score a load of points for being high in the GC from stage 4 all the way to the end.
Great preview danny! Thanks for taking on the huge task of reporting a GC.

Can't imagine a better way to start my first GT
Stoltz working in the final, Dzamastagic delivering a strong leadout and Van Stayen completes the job perfectly. I couldn't have written a tactic I'd like more!
Leader and points jersey add a couple more points to my team's already impressive numbers and the second stage offers a chance for a repeat
A shame that a crash occured so early. Especially for those managers who had a rider in it but also for every neutral watches as now it is just the question whether Pluchkin will wear the leaders jersey for 16 or 17 stages...
Awesome report! Totally worth a start of a GT !
Thanks ember!

Right...first crash of the race and Madrazo is down and loses a minute on Pluchkin, Alarcon, Nibali and Cattaneo.
Guess I should be happy he doesn't seem injured though.

Our sprints are so bad this year. Random positioning if you don't have a train is working against us so much. I hope Nerz is okay, already an unnecessary time loss against f.ex. Keinath.

Well, first stage and it's almost free way for Pluchkin to become second rider to win all 3 GT, and the first to be current winner of all 3 GT |

Until he crashes too.
I hate the crash frequency this year, big favourite in Madrazo loosin time because of it already, cant be happy about it, we want to beat him ON the bike, so hopefuly no injury and no more important crashes please!
But of course great job from Aleksandr to gain time on some other guys, being attentive and ready.
Thanks for the report sgdanny and congrats knockout!

Nibbles one of the few to stay in the lead group so an excellent start from him. Congrats to knockout.

Kwiatkowski and Sergent are our main hopes here, hopefully they can gather some points.
Congrats to knockout on the opening stage win. Pluchkin gaining time on his rivals already is ominous also. |

Great start to the report for you danny!
Massive shocks and splits already in the race, and it looks like Croatia will leave it's mark on some riders.
Congrats to knockout on the win, as Evonik continue to impress at the higher level.

Loved that team work, great work from the guys. Just a little pity about the hill, but that's where you really see the class that Van Staeyen has. Congrats on another great performance, knockout.
Just have to go again on the coming stages. If we can repeat our efforts with the train, I'm confident that Guarnieri will pick a win or two.
