Actually, not big surprise hearing recent news from Italy. RSI is planning to do easiest Giro yet in order to attract best GT riders and making the Giro-Tour actually doable.

There were the rumours, and it seems it might happen. Nibali will be another that will do Giro-Tour if these plans are true, which definitely looks like it.

Don't worry, Tinkoff have signed half of the fired staff from Sky.

He's going for the three GT's next year. I'll bet my ass.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Movistar also try it if the Giro - Tour double looks possible. Quintana must have a similar chance to Contador or Froome to do so and a fresh Valverde would be a Vuelta contender.

Meh, Contador at peak level in 2011 and still he hand not what was needed to beat Evans, among others, that year. I know that that Giro was especially hard, but watching the latest Giros with rain and 10-15 degrees, that might not be the think you want in order to beat Froome in july.

Seems like he wants the triple, no? Every cycling fan can only applaud that, but it seems highly unlikely with the GT talent around these days. That should have been done in 2009 with Menchov and Valverde winning fairly mediocre GTs

And what if Froome also goes for Giro-Tour double Wink

So you guys are cheering because we are going to see and easy race with only a few huge favorites?

I agree... the Giro was the hardest GT on the calendar which distinguished it from the others... its disappointing that it will go down the Tour route especially since the Giro has been the most entertaining GT the past few years... Rolling Eyes

Although I believe the parcours has a massive impact on the race, at the end of the day it's the riders who make the race. In each edition of the last 3 years, the Giro has arguably had the weakest startlist out of the three Grand Tours, and so to see big names telling us they will be appearing at the one of if not the world's greatest race (imho) is always a welcome sight.

So it will be Nibali vs Contador at Giro then, and all path free for Froome or Quintana to win TdF.

Seriously I'm surprised by his announcement. I thought, he had only TdF on his mind. What is on his mind. Does he think Froome and Quintana will be super strong at TdF and he can't match. Or this has to with Giro win he lost in 2011 and failed attempt at double? We will have to wait till route is announced.

As far as I remember, the hard climbs didnt make the Giro a particular good race. All but one of the stages was rather boring tbh, except the stage Quintana won over Gavio and Stelvio (which basically was caused by the wheather).

I have no problems with an 'easy' route as long they use the harder parts, instead of just creating small gaps the last couple of kilometres which basically was what we saw in 2014

I have big respect for Contador's decision to ride the giro next year.

After having shown this year, that he is still one of the best grand tour riders in the world (if not the strongest), he could take it easy in 2015 and fully concentrate on the Tour in July.

But he decides to get out of his comfort zone, to honour one of the world's most iconic cycling events.

Not like other stage racers in the past, who gave a shit about the Giro (e.g. Armstrong, Ullrich)

The Giro was in the last past few years the least exciting GT to watch. Not because of the profiles, that should make it the hardest and most exciting one, but because of the contenders.
2014: Quintana....rest of the world.
2013: Nibali....rest of the world.
2012: Rodriguez-Hesjedal-De Gendt, but exciting because of the battle, not because of the performances, Rodriguez should have won easily.
2011: Contador....rest of the world (even if he was then dsq'd)

Of course, all the perfromances of those riders were exciting and at the limit of the exploit and made it at least a fun race to watch.
The riders make a race fun, if we sacrifice a bit of difficult uphill stages to get more performance from the point of view of the riders, the Giro will get better.

Something got messed up here. 2012 was a quite exciting battle between Hesjedal and Rodriguez. Smile
