Tour of Northern Europe - Preview

Welcome to Zottegem, Belgium, where we meet prior to the start of the 8 stage Tour of Northern Europe. The riders will have to negate various terrain over the next 8 days and the most versatile rider should come away from here with a Win.

The opening stage is a rather long TTT which should create early gaps and highlight some early favourites.
This is later followed by a 28km Individual TT on Stage 5 which will allow those riders without a great Team set-up to shine. Both stages against the clock are likely to have quite the GC impact.

Stages 3 and 7 could be tough for some to negate as they include many short and sharp climbs. The finishing section on both stages could be a little hairy for those who aren't too strong when the road heads up.

Stage 4 stands out on its own as the one and only stage for the cobblestone specialists. The terrain itself is quite flat but the cobbled sections are numerous during the 2nd half of the day and could really end some GC challenges from those who would rather a smoother and more consistent road surface.

Stages 2, 6 and 8 should favour the Sprinters and so are unlikely to have much of a GC impact.

Race Favourites

Hard to pick favourites due to the variation across the 8 stages but we do have riders who will be hoping for big results here.

2 young riders from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Team Puma - SAP stand out as potential winners here. Remi Cavagna and Filippo Ganna are both very well-rounded riders who are strong against the clock and can go up a hill. Cavagna should take team leadership though, especially given he was 3rd here last year and so clearly has what it takes.

The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali trio of Nelson Oliveira, Stefan Kung and Dylan Van Baarle will look to provide the best competition on all terrains. They are all individually as strong as the Puma duo but their TTT set-up isn't quite as strong so they'll need to look for time elsewhere. Oliviera and Kung went 1-2 here last year so Generali will be hoping for a repeat of that result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Tom Wirtgen is one of the top TT riders here and he's strong going up hill but, like many others, he could struggle to keep with the other favourites on Stage 4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Mads Wurtz is the best TT rider here and he's quite a strong all-rounder but again, he will struggle on the cobbles.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Yuttana Mano isn't quite as strong on his own against the clock but he's a well-rounded rider other than on the cobbles and his team hasn't sent him much help for the TTT.

Without Stage 4, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Ion Izagirre would be the clear favourite here with his mixed strength on the hills and against the clock, as well as a strong TTT set-up. However, that Stage 4 could really ruin his chances here as he may as well walk over them with the ability he has.

Finally, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Yoann Paillot who is a great TT rider and alright all-rounder but he's also very poor on the cobblestones and his Manager hasn't helped him as he lacks TTT support.

TTT

There are 2 favourites for the opening stage and therefore, the first Leaders Jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Puma-SAP and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Dutcha both have very strong set-ups here. They would both have to have a bad day for someone else to win the opener.

Individual TT

Besides the trio already mentioned of Wurtz, Wirtgen and Paillot, there are a handful of other riders who should provide healthy competition for the ITT on Stage 5 and may well be targeting that rather than being too worried about the previous stages or those after.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Vlatos stands out of these 5 and will be expecting a strong result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Polar duo, Mullen and Viennet, will need to focus their attention on the opening stage but will have the opportunity to ride for themselves and pick up a strong stage result/

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Sutterlin will be key to the GC hopes of the Puma-SAP team and may well be required to get involved in the chasing so this stage may be a big ask for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich on the other hand will have the freedom to go for it here and he should definitely be a challenger.

Sprinters

Quite a few teams here have noticed that there are 3 flat stages in which they can send a sprinter to try their luck. Their is a stand-out trio here of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Sam Bewley, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Hsuan Ping Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Moreno Moser who will expect to be challenging for stage wins. However, there are plenty of other riders who will be mixing it with these 3.

Puncheurs

Not too many strong Puncheurs present here but, with 2 stages there for the taking, there are definitely riders to watch out for. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Sean De Bie, 5th here last year, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Edvald Boasson Hagen are two of the strongest puncheurs in World cycling and so should set off some fireworks for us to enjoy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Clement Koretzky is another very capable rider to keep an eye on while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Ion Izagirre will be hoping that he can utilise these stages to balance out his losses elsewhere.

Cobblestone Specialists

Despite there only being 1 stage for them, we have a very strong field of riders when it comes to contesting that one stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lukasz Wisniowski may well be hoping to have a shot at the GC, after finishing 4th here last year, so he'll hope that the cobbled stage is ridden hard and creates gaps throughout.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Danny Summerhill is equally as strong but will hoping to go into the final 1km on his own.

He's already been mentioned as the top sprinter here so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Sam Bewley will be the favorite if Stage 4 ends in a sprint. He'll have competition from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Mads Pedersen, the other prong of the Grieg fork, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Edward Theuns who are both capable of a strong sprint as well.

Crucial race for us with Per in a normal universe being a Top5 rider here but I fear like this could be a great race for Puma if the AI does shit again on the "selective" stages. We definitely need some luck.

Definitely in need for another big race here, which often was a good one in team history.
De Bie has proven his abilities here and Van Hooydonck hopefully can do well, too in his first maxed TONE.

It's position in the calendar always has an impact on the title/relegation battles, and unique combo of skillsets required to cope with all the different stage types makes the ToNE a stand-out on the PT calendar in my eyes.

ISA - Hexacta have no obvious favourites in any of the key terrains, but do have a number of intersting options on the start-list in terms of 'combo' riders. If 1 or 2 of them can get good positioning on the key days, they are competent enough to defend their interests in the ITT.

Last season we had Degenkolb here who did well in the sprints, but RD's made it impossible for the 2021 season. Sam Harrison gets the opportunity to deputise. Given the sprinter list, at the very least hope Sam does actually grab the chance to sprint rather than sitting in the middle of the bunch!

Thanks for the preview LLS, looking forward to the reports.

My favorite race on the calendar because of its unpredictability!

ToNE has been very kind to us the past two seasons, and I hope we can convert the confidence these performances and our 2021 season as a whole give us into a strong showing this time around as well.

Ganna just proved his ability to win a stage race with a hilly/TT/TTT focus, but the cobbled stage should play sufficiently more into Cavagna's hands again to indeed back the Frenchman.
Aregger is mostly here for his decent TT-cobbles combination, but he's certainly free to give it a shot in the sprints as well.
And as for Sütterlin, he's indeed crucial to the first half of our TTT, but has no reason to save energy in the individual TT considering it comes after two of the three decisive stages.

I hope the cobbled stage will again be ridden more conservatively to help our GC ambitions significantly, and sadly we'll also need rather unselective hilly stages.
But the top tier TTT lineup we bring here and the TT superiority compared to every puncheur bar Izagirre should give us enough of a cushion to survive a puncheur assault on the GC. Obviously we can't afford to get caught behind random splits on the way though, we need all gaps to appear on the respective final hill only. Therefore it's vital to be in the top echelons of the GC going into these stages to have a good reason to be at the front of the race at all times.

It's always hard to predict this race for your own team or the others, so I won't set any particular goal or get anyone's hopes up, but I'm excited to watch the action unfold!

tastasol
Not sure what to expect. We come in to this race with Wisniowski as our leader, but looking at last year, Würtz could be able to do a good GC as well. Hopefully we won't have an AI problem due to that.

Hoping for the best, but could go many ways this.

Bikex
Interesting to see Mano listed with the favorites but honestly I think his cobbles stat is too low for that. I rather hope for Kasperkiewicz to get a good GC. For that the cobbles stage needs to be selective which I'm not too certain about since the cobble sections got nerfed too seasons ago. Further, great to see Hsu as one of the top sprinters listed, hope he can make it count. Unfortunately I don't have the best leadout train.
Thanks for the preview, LLS!

Polanc is here to lead us and he should be a pretty good fit for this race. However, im not really satisfied with the support squad i vould send. No matter what i changed it just loooked out. But hopefully it doesnt matter too much.

We ended up training Malecki more toward his identity as a breakaway rider than optimizing his TONE skills. So he definitely lacks the TT and cobble skills to play a real role here. But still curious to see where he can end up.

We didn't quite manage to out-TT Generali enough to avoid them out-cobbling us, but I'm happy about that performance! Smile
Congrats matt! This is what your team was made for, and it delivered.

Obviously it will be very hard to challenge Küng/Oliveira/DvB now that they get significantly preferential treatment, but I hope Generali can't keep all of them ahead of Cavagna after the stage 3/4 double header and we can pounce in the TT again.
Over a minute to everyone bar the Top 4 and even upwards of two minutes against some heavy hitters is also worth applauding and should give us at least a little bit of a cushion in case of hard ridden stages.

Pretty good start. Generali with the perfect start, but let's see if we will have selective cobbles this year. If not, it looks great for Van Baarle/Oliveira.

Quietly pleased with ISA - Hexacta's TTT outing. As expected not up to the standard of the true front runners, but gave a good account nonetheless given the lack of big names in our starting line-up. Lost a lot of time in the 1st TT dominated section, then the 'combo' skills kicked in in the latter sections. Think the spread of time gaps is quite reasonable given the length/difficulty/complexity of the parcours. Lets see if the TTT has a significant impact or not on the overall given many of the road stages have historically thrown up big swings in time gained/lost depending on rider strengths/weaknesses as the race evolves.

Congrats to the podium teams - not unexpected, but good to see overall team strength for this route appropriately rewarded.
