Tour of Britain
History

Welcome to the eleventh edition of the Tour of Britain. The race has received an upgrade from C2HC to C1, but has been downsized from eight to five stages. The three most recent winners are not here, due to either their team not being here or a conflicting race. The only double winner, Bellis, does return but not as outright favorite. Ignatiev won in 2014 and while the route suits him, he's past his glory days. Who can add their name to the history books?
Profiles
The races starts with a hilly stage to separate the wheat from the chaff. The sprinters have their likely only shot on the second stage. The GC will be thrown around on the long time trial midway through the race. The puncheurs have time to recover on the final two stages, hoping to drop the time trialists.
Startlist
Puncheurs | HL | TT | ACC | Outsiders | HL | TT | ACC | Di Maggio | 82 | 62 | 75 | Barrio | 79 | 58 | 67 | Froome | 81 | 66 | 73 | Moazemi | 78 | 69 | 73 | Anuar Aziz | 81 | 62 | 71 | Juul-Jensen | 78 | 67 | 79 | Izagirre | 80 | 77 | 64 | Palini | 78 | 66 | 74 | Costa | 80 | 76 | 72 | Levarlet | 78 | 65 | 66 | Waeytens | 80 | 65 | 73 | Serry | 78 | 63 | 69 | Meyer | 79 | 69 | 77 | Bellis | 78 | 62 | 75 | Pichon | 79 | 64 | 76 | Roux | 78 | 62 | 75 | Bilbao | 79 | 63 | 75 | Navardauskas | 75 | 76 | 70 | Prevar | 79 | 62 | 73 | Bazhkou | 75 | 76 | 64 | Bystrom | 79 | 61 | 76 | Ignatiev | 74 | 79 | 81 | Coppel | 76 | 83 | 74 | Nepomnyachsniy | 74 | 77 | 75 |
Given the race contains hills and a time trial, a hybrid can be seen as favorites. Izagirre and Costa are the best time trialists amongst the pure puncheurs.
We've seen Coppel do well in similar races. The Frenchman is not the best puncheur, but good enough to limit his loss before beating everyone on the time trial.
The best puncheur comes from the lower division. Di Maggio is the star of ENI, but needs to gain a lot of time on the hilly stages to compensate for the time trial. Meyer is better suited to that discipline, hoping to bring home team Eddie Stobart a major win again.
Froome and Anuar Aziz are the best PCT-puncheurs, but suffering from the same problem as Di Maggio. Still, a day success and a top ten can be good results as well. Froome might get some boost from the crowd.
Special mention for the former winners. Ignatiev has the same appearance as Coppel except his age is starting to show. That doesn't mean we should rule him out, as a top five is still very much a possibility. Back-to-back winner Bellis should be hunting for stage wins in front of his home crowd. The route and the competition is a lot more difficult than it was at the start of the decade.
[Sprinters | SP | ACC | HL | Time trialists | HL | TT | ACC | Thorsen | 82 | 85 | 54 | Viennet | 67 | 80 | 64 | Ulanowski | 80 | 77 | 58 | Brändle | 71 | 79 | 69 | Hayakawa | 79 | 79 | 65 | Goldstein | 61 | 79 | 61 | Pelucchi | 79 | 77 | 68 | Stannard | 55 | 79 | 72 | Ranneries | 78 | 82 | 56 | Reus | 73 | 78 | 61 | Corti | 78 | 76 | 63 | Li | 61 | 78 | 75 | Dzervus | 77 | 77 | 66 | Kovalev | 56 | 78 | 75 | Polivoda | 77 | 77 | 67 | Steensen | 72 | 77 | 70 | Cimolai | 77 | 77 | 66 | Christian | 69 | 77 | 72 | Opie | 77 | 77 | 66 | Postlberger | 68 | 77 | 70 | Berger | 77 | 77 | 65 | Cheung | 67 | 77 | 66 | Sonnery | 77 | 71 | 69 | Johansson | 59 | 77 | 71 | Geschke | 76 | 76 | 74 | Novak | 73 | 76 | 65 | Navardauskas | 75 | 70 | 75 | Choi | 74 | 75 | 68 | Bellis | 74 | 75 | 78 | Konovalovas | 75 | 74 | 73 |
One flat stage for the sprinters, so a few made the trip here. Thorsen is the name at the top of the list, but that requires all speed bumps to be removed and the stage to be ridden at 30 km/h.
Ulanowski, Hayakawa and Pelucchi look to be the names which we'll see at the front. Maybe an outsider like Corti or Ranneries could surprise them though.
The more punchy sprinters are Geschke, Navardauskas and Bellis.
Coppel is the major favorite for the time trial, but there are other competitors who came here just for this stage and without GC ambitions. Viennet is the most notable of them.
Brändle and Reus could profit from the small hill which lies in the route, even though that means Coppel is even more in his element.

Pelucchi for a stage win here? Stage 2 should be a mass sprint and 1 might be.
Some GC points from Waeytens would be nice as well.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Given the profiles we have a good squad here, hoping for not so selective climbs to put Stan the Man in with a top 5 shout. Otherwise hope for a Roux stage surprise and a Bazhkou top 15-20

We NEED a good performance from Juul-Jensen here. GC wise, we can't expect much given the long TT. That means he has to be even MORE aggressive in the hills to make something of this race.
If Ranneries wants to do something a sprint leader, this is his chance. I don't see that happening with his flat and hill, but hey, why not? Same goes for Steensen.
Bottom line - we need to be aggressive, and we need points.

Given the profiles and the length of that TT, this race really should favour both Rui and Nava. And yet, somehow, PCM has put Poels as our team leader! Not that it matters too much. Expecting good things from the squad in this race.
Thanks for the preview.

Big bet here. Hoping Froome will be able to protect Ignatiev through the harder hills, while still providing a solid end GC. Izagirre and Coppel already has the first two positions secured, hoping to take 3rd. Our luck in Britain hasnt been good ever, so I'm reluctant for sure

Don't know really what to expect from this. TT will kill Bystrom, and hills are probably too hard for Novak. Good to see that not a lot of teams in the promotion fight are in the race

I really would have favored an attack from JJ, but he seems to be on good form and didn't lose any time, so we'll take it. That time will be lost and then some in the TT, but we'll take what we can get for now.

Decent start for Costa, with Nava not losing too much time. That stage turned out a lot more selective than I was expecting!

Malecki joining the break is nice to see, and Kono finished close enough to the lead group that lucky PCM form in the TT will decide the quality of the race for us, so pretty happy with that start given our lowish expectations.
Thanks for the report and congrats Eden! (also, why is Palini good now? )

That is a terrible start for us, Bellis shouldn't have lost any time really but now he has, lets hope he can be aggressive and force something.
Im hoping we can get close to a stage win here, but its going to be hard based on the line up in this race.

Costa and Coppel already looking good - surely it’s there’s to lose. Remind me again how Coppel found his way into the PCT? Did he get lost?
Great win for Anuar Aziz! Always happy to see him win. A rider of his caliber with a surprisingly small amount of victories, always good to see him add another to the tally.
Thanks for the report also!
