Note | Will be posted soon after (!) Sakartvelo. Sorry for the late previews here.
Kenyan Mountain Classic
The Kenyan Mountain Classic already goes into it's 6th edition since being brought to the MG schedule back in 2013. Obviously one of the most prestigious one day classics in this HC category and surely a key day for the premium climbers in the PCT. A rather short race, that will be decided on the last of only two climbs.
The previous race winners were Sergio Luis Henao Montoya (2017), who took a commanding victory last year, Andrei Amador (2016), Alberto Contador (2015), Benat Intxausti (2014) and Rein Taaramäe (2013). Definitely some big names on this list. Who will follow on those mountain goats?
The Startlist
The Favorites Favorites | MO | AC | | | Outsiders | MO | AC | Denifl | 84 | 65 | | | Garby | 79 | 70 | Henao Montoya | 82 | 73 | | | Carthy | 79 | 69 | Úran | 82 | 71 | | | Talansky | 79 | 69 | Velits | 82 | 67 | | | Pantano Gómez | 79 | 68 | Keizer | 81 | 73 | | | Signorini | 78 | 74 | Kudus | 81 | 70 | | | Manfredi | 78 | 73 | Berhane | 81 | 68 | | | Ndayisenga | 78 | 73 | Shikai | 81 | 66 | | | Bennett | 78 | 73 | Nazaret | 80 | 72 | | | Solis | 78 | 66 | Meintjes | 80 | 69 | | | Maillet | 77 | 77 | Choi | 80 | 68 | | | Tvetcov | 77 | 73 | Ji | 80 | 65 | | | Gilanipoor | 77 | 73 | Penasa | 79 | 76 | | | Senni | 77 | 72 | | | | | | Mannion | 77 | 71 | | | | | | Augustyn | 77 | 68 |
Henao Montoya is back to defend last year's victory, which would make him the first rider to win this event twice. The chances look good, since he should be considered as one of the top favorites again. His strong kick, great climbing skills and of course his experiences from last season will make for a great overall package.
"Diesel" Denifl as always at the top of list of premium climbers, willing to bounce back from a rather disappointing 5th place here in 2017. Úran (who once missed the podium here as 4th in 2014) and Velits as other climbers, who will hope to rely on their pure climbing skills. Velits surely needs to get some consistency in his season though: given his results so far, he may only be considered an outsider for the podium spots.
Keizer, Kudus, Berhane and Shikai may not be the top favorites, but they are all capable to pull great results. Kudus (4th last year) is enjoying a great season and also Shikai had some nice success recently. Keizer's combination of climbing and acceleration certainly looks dangerous, too.
Nazaret, Meintjes, Choi, Ji and Penasa top the list of possible Top-10 (or Top-5) contenders. Garby may hope to not disappoint his manager for another time. Carthy, Talansky, Manfredi or Solis would need some very special daily form to enter the Top-10 in this race.

No Pluchkin, hurray!
Úran should be on the podium at least. Prefering a win obviously.

Whilst Velits has been Mr. Inconsistent so far, he's just been Mr. Shit in classics. Surprise me Petey.
Also someone rename this race
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

What he said
Top 5 goal and no excuse for Henao to not achieve that. The stage win in Bayern is hopefully a good omen. The win in Pico Basille earlier also gives me hope. This route is tailor-made for him really.

Dall'Oste still hasn't overperformed this year, now would be a good time.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Well, it's sure nice to be racing again after a long break, but I'm not too hopeful. Anytime you come to a PCT mountain classic hedging your bets on Garby, you're not gonna leave a happy man. Maybe he can attack somewhere, but I doubt it.

Meintjes is very much in the 2nd tier of favourites here, top 10 is the wish but I hope we can crack the top 5 with a good race!

Let's hope Kudus still has the legs of the first part of the season. He shouldn't beat neither Henao or Denifl, so fighting for a podium spot would be the best scenerio. He was 4th last season, i'd be content with a Top7 or so

Great to be back in the racing mood! Looking forward to seeing what Penasa can do in this one - seems reasonably well set up for his strengths.
Hoping for him to just sneak in for a top 5, but that might be pushing it
Thanks for the preview tsmoha

The default position for WCC in the mountain classics this season; looking for a top 10 for Berhane backed up by a top 20 by Ji. A great result would see them pushing up close to the top 5/15 respectively.
Don't expect to compete with the top favourites, but Berhane has been having a solid season, although this is his first race for quite some time.

No wasted racedays for us here, got some goats for the breakaway, anything giving points is a success.

Will take anything in the Top 5 or both Choi and Shikai in the Top 10.

Hoped for more of course. Amongst the best but just not good enough in the sprint. Ah well, points are points. Martinez with a good result though.
Thanks for the report tsmoha and congrats AbhishekLFC!

Not a single mention throughout the report and then suddenly there's Senni with a nice 13th place!

Felt about the same with Solis getting 9th, which I'll happily take!
