While the MG world focuses on their first Grand Tour of the season, some PT and PCT teams are heading to the south-west of USA to race the 12th edition of Tour of California.
Just seven stages this year, one less than in other years, but we have here a very well-balanced route. The race will start with a prologue, followed by a flat stage, before having the first hilly stage of the race. The attitude of the riders will mark if we'll have a 20-30 riders group fighting for the stage win, or if the stage will be very selective. After this stage, the last sprint stage before the three key stages come. First, an incredibly hard hilly stage. The first part of the stage with "long" climbs before the shorter hills in the second part of the stage. And for those riders who have survived to the hilly stages, Mount Baldy awaits them. To end the race, a 25-km TT where the GC winner will be decided
Not a single former winner of the race will be present in this year's edition, so we'll have for sure a new winner this year, but this doesn't stop the startlist from being really strong. Justo Tenorio can be called the main race favourite, being the strongest climber here and also the best TTer between the climbers, but his lack of punch might hurt a lot his chances. Andrey Amador doesn't have that problem, but he isn't as strong as Tenorio in both hills and TTs. Romain Sicard is clearly the best climber in the hilly terrain, where he will need to distance both Amador and Tenorio to avoid losing the race in Mount Baldy.
In the second line of race favourites, there are riders like Lecuisiner, Dekker, Intxausti, Yates and Wellens. Although usually they shouldn't be fighting for the overall win, if any of them have the perfect day on the ideal stage, they might end up as GC winners. All of them will be for sure in the battle for a podium place and should finish inside the top10 barring any disaster.
We can't forget about some riders who will be in the fight around 7th-12th places. All of them are either really bad on hills, or are sub-top climbers. We are talking about guys as Roglic, Duarte, Choi, Pinot, Warbasse or Van der Broeck. Also a rider like Slagter could do really well in this race, with his great hill abilities combined with his decent climbing abilities
Rider | MON | HIL | TT | PRL | Rider | MON | HIL | TT | PRL | Tenorio | 84 | 76 | 80 | 79 | Amador | 84 | 75 | 78 | 77 | Lecuisinier | 82 | 75 | 77 | 77 | Sicard | 82 | 78 | 76 | 76 | Dekker | 81 | 75 | 78 | 78 | Intxausti | 82 | 71 | 77 | 77 | Yates | 79 | 76 | 71 | 71 | Wellens | 81 | 75 | 72 | 72 | Roglic | 79 | 76 | 72 | 70 | Choi | 80 | 74 | 75 | 74 | Duarte | 80 | 68 | 75 | 75 | Brenes | 79 | 73 | 69 | 69 | Warbasse | 78 | 75 | 74 | 74 | Van den Broeck | 79 | 74 | 73 | 73 | Slagter | 78 | 78 | 66 | 66 | Pinot | 80 | 74 | 65 | 65 | Contador | 79 | 73 | 71 | 71 | Ji | 80 | 75 | 69 | 69 |
Moving onto the puncheurs field! With two possible stage wins in the menu, and even a decent GC placement if the hilly stages prove to be really hard, sp,e good puncheurs are here. The best of them is Toms Skujins, who should be the stage favourite for both S3 and S5, but any GC hopes will be destroyed by his horrible TT abilities and his not so good climbing skills. De Bie is another big favourite for this couple of stages, and if he is strong enough to survive Mount Baldy, with his decent TT abilities, he won't much time in the final TT. Other puncheurs like Izagirre, who might find himself working for Tenorio, Koretzky, who also might have to work for Lecuisinier, and Strava's duo, Vanendert and Pichon will have a shot in those stages in a lucky day
Rider | HILL | MON | TT | Rider | HILL | MON | TT | Skujins | 83 | 70 | 59 | De Bie | 82 | 71 | 72 | Izagirre | 79 | 74 | 77 | Koretzky | 80 | 71 | 61 | Vanendert | 78 | 72 | 71 | Pichon | 79 | 70 | 64 | Bystrom | 79 | 68 | 61 | Jensen | 78 | 70 | 67 | Juul-Jensen | 78 | 70 | 67 | Dowsett | 80 | 65 | 63 |
There are two stages for the sprinters in the race, and despite that barely any top sprinter is here. This makes John Degenkolb the only favourite to win both stages. Iberia has also brought here Merino Criado and Kluge to make the perfect lead-outs for the German star. Maksimov and Appollonio, from PCT teams, will be looking to defeat Degenkolb somehow, while riders like Stauff, Serebriakov, Aberasturi or Pelucchi, while they don't have the speed to actually win the stages, they can get valious point through stage podiums
Rider | SPR | ACC | | SPR | ACC | Degenkolb | 84 | 81 | Maksimov | 81 | 84 | Appollonio | 81 | 78 | Stauff | 80 | 81 | Serebriakov | 80 | 77 | Aberasturi | 79 | 78 | Pelucchi | 79 | 77 | Colbrelli | 79 | 75 | Merino Criado | 78 | 80 | Van der Sanden | 78 | 79 | Tewelde | 78 | 77 | Cisse | 78 | 77 |
And the final type of riders to be presented are the time-trialist. Again two stages for them, first a short prologue, and book-ending the race, a 25-km TT.
Jerome Coppel and Panagiatos Vlatos form a lethal duo to take both stage wins for Festina, but they won't be alone in that fight, as riders like Cornu, Viennet, Paillot, Fraile and Ford will be in the fight in both stages for sure, together with some GC riders as Tenorio, Amador or Lecuisinier.
Rider | TT | PRL | Rider | TT | PRL | Coppel | 83 | 83 | Ford | 81 | 81 | Vlatos | 81 | 81 | Cornu | 81 | 81 | Paillot | 80 | 80 | Viennet | 80 | 80 | Fraile | 79 | 79 | Hansen | 77 | 79 |

Good memories here (pretty sure we won a few stages here in the past), so it's a pity we could not choose this PTHC band (wouldn't have make sense anyway).
Lecuisinier definitely needs to deliver for Festina and it will be interesting to see how Amador keeps to perform in his North America stint. A few interesting dark horses thanks to the important hilly stages. Bobridge managed to Top-15 the GC here, iirc, but Skujins should struggle with those two final stages.
Hopefully the AI will deliver. Thanks for the good preview!

Racing on home soil is nice. Not sure what to expect with the group of guys we are bringing here. The combination of Warbasse and Fraile makes for some hope of a good GC result, plus Maksimov has had a solid season so far.
Hopefully, Taylor Newton shows his face as well just for nostalgia purposes.

Really glad about the look of the startlist. Few climbers here that have a good hill stat so Skujins should indeed be favourite on both hill stages (stage 3 looks like it has a big mountain impact). Kinda surprised that the startlist doesn't include more top puncheurs after last season have multiple hill specialists a good GC result. Here is hope that the fifth stage will again cause huge gaps which vould help me a lot in getting a solid GC result out of this despite the mountainous stage.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Would like to see Roglic in a top 10 here, the field is not that strong so if he performs on par with Vancouver rather than what he did in Eritrea or Romandie he may well do even better than that. This is about to be a huge point haul for UBS and Orange PCT-wise mostly though, the former being our direct opponents for promotion and the latter with one foot and a half in 2018's PT already.
Btw, for once Roglic has some really solid support in both mountains and hills without TTTs and therefore no need to bring several time trialists. I figured we weren't gonna score much in the TTs so the best man here for stage 1 and 7 is Sakellaridis, while Roglic can count on several worthy domestiques. Bring it on.
Thanks Aquarius!

Wellens aiming for somewhat close to top 5 here but those guys who are as good as him in the mountains and hills got a decent advantage on Wellens in those TT kms. Cort-Nielsen to maybe get top 20/30 in GC and Haugard Jensen to get a decent GC place as well would be fun.
Will be fun to see if Bystrom/Haugard Jensen can try anything on those hillstages or if they only will work as helpers to Wellens. |

From a selfishly point of view, I was hoping for a couple of more stars from the PT teams. Both Sicard and Amador should reallt fancy their chances here, and Maksimov should be able to build on a good season.
Should nevertheless be a good race, looking forward to following it.

Another PT HC race we're following from the sidelines, so hopefully the good teams will steal points off of each other a lot.
Actually, Baldy might turn out to be the least selective stage from the looks of it, those are some tough hilly stages. Herklotz would've enjoyed this one.
I hope Iberia will cash in here with their allstar lineup. Beyond that, go PCT teams and Yates surely can surprise a second time this season already.

Really interesting to see different tactics from each team. Iberia and Festina looking really sharp. Should be interesting to see Skujins and De Bie vs climbers. Looking forward to this race even though we are not taking a part.

Well I was scared at the possible startlist here seeing how the Giro was relatively weak, but it looks like only Tenorio is here from the top tier of PT riders. A podium should definitely be doable, but I could see Amador dropping to around 5th or so (barring a catastrophe).

Garby and Contador are both here cause lol mountain races.
Juul Jensen is here for some ungodly reason. More really bad planning by me. He better perform now.
I was not expecting Appo to be so high up in the favorites here, and thus didn't bring a leadout. Hopefully he can grab a couple of top 5's.

Well, we brought what we have here. I obviously hope for a stagewin from Coppel, and then we'll have to see what happens. Having 3 really strong riders isn't necessarily a good idea as they tend to interfere with eachothers points potential, but I had to give it a go.
I hoped to see just Amador here with 83+, but looking at how Tenorio usually performs at PT level, I think this is smart planning.

With Dekker and De Bie I decided to go strong here.
Top5 in GC with first and maybe a stage win and top20 with later.
Van der Sanden as 2nd or 3rd tier sprinter at least with a chance on his own for once.
A good scoring race is absolutely wanted and also needed seeing 2-3 other races this year where my team didn`t perform so good and in the cobbled season every point is needed for my team to not drop too far.
What I really don`t need are more crashes. Seems like the random team selection has hit my team this season. Can`t complain too much as last year I was rather lucky.
But Dekker looked strong this season except for the days he crashed.
And De Bie usually is a lot better in stage races as in classics, where he consistently underperforms. Hence expectations are very high for this race.
Amador, Sicard and Lecusinier will be very hard to beat but it`s Tenorio I hope to win as he should at least be 2nd or 3rd in this race and anything less would be a desaster for Iberia. |

Seems like the Pelucchi gamble could pay off really well. Stage top 3 could definitely happen. Other than that, go go breakaway!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Basically we only have ambitions for the TT's, where Paillot will hopefully find his KBC-legs as the opposition is tough.
The rest of the race is all about breakaways. I'll be happy as long as they actually try something. Anything really.

Not sure what to expect of this race. Duarte a good candidate for the top10 in the GC if he doesn't fail terribly once again (which he has done a few times this season), Serebriakov a contender for sprint top 5s (if he actually bothers) and Ford a good podium candidate for TTs (if he doesn't OTL before the last TT)
If I manage to get some good points with any of the three I'll be a happy man.

Hoping for a solid return of points from Pichon and Vanendert. Let's go and show what you can do w/o Bakelants. Looking forward to another brilliant coverage and great preview again, Aquarius. May we have more success than in the Giro atm.

My weakest squad of the season IIRC, not even a mention in the preview. Hoping for some more luck here please.

Let's just say that I'm happy my team is not here, that is some scary lineup, especially for the GC.
Hoping for Iberia dominated performance from Degenkolb and Tenorio. Just fear that PCM wants to balance things out and make one of them fail direly

This race was a bit of an afterthought for us, and with this startliet there isn't any huge expectations. If Intxausti could get himself into the top 10 however, that'd be mighty fine
Thanks for the preview!
