Kenya Mountain Classic
Category: HC | 164,8 km | terrain: mountain | Kenya |
A warm welcome from Kenya for this years edition of the Kenya Mountain Classic. The race has a length of 164,8 kilometers and a stunning climb to race for two times.
The first time this mountain will be ridden just for the sake of tiering legs, but the second part matters. Former episodes have shown that this race will be decided on the last steep 18 kilometers. There the favourites will battle the victory out, climbing to a huge altitude in a short time and deciding about the 2016 champion of the Kenya Mountain Classic.
Out of the pool of former winners we sadly only have one guy competing. Taaramae (2013) and Intxausti (2014) are not there, but instead we can welcome Alberto Contador, the winner of the latest edition here in Kenya. Remember last year, when he won with the very early attack on the climb over Keizer, and thus beating the big favourite Machado.
This year Machado might reacted to that painful lose and doesn't find himself on the startlist. Instead we have a bunch of hungry guys that all aim to be the king of Kenya:
| Mo | Res | Acc | Hi | | Mo | Res | Acc | Hi | Denifl | 84 | 71 | 65 | 76 | Moschella | 79 | 70 | 62 | 69 | Amador | 84 | 74 | 72 | 75 | Pozzovivo | 79 | 78 | 72 | 75 | Martin | 82 | 78 | 76 | 77 | Atapuma | 78 | 72 | 73 | 73 | Dekker | 82 | 83 | 72 | 76 | Chamorro | 78 | 76 | 74 | 75 | Berhane | 81 | 74 | 68 | 75 | Lövkvist | 78 | 77 | 67 | 75 | Contador | 81 | 77 | 68 | 75 | Fothen | 78 | 74 | 64 | 71 | Monsalve | 81 | 80 | 73 | 76 | Panayotov | 78 | 76 | 72 | 72 | Rujano | 80 | 80 | 73 | 72 | Stetina | 78 | 74 | 65 | 67 | Duarte | 80 | 76 | 73 | 68 | Preidler | 78 | 77 | 69 | 77 | Pinot | 80 | 79 | 69 | 74 | Beltran | 77 | 71 | 74 | 77 | Shikai | 80 | 76 | 65 | 71 | Roglic | 77 | 76 | 74 | 76 | Brajkovic | 80 | 79 | 71 | 75 | Yates | 77 | 78 | 75 | 75 | Marquez | 80 | 78 | 80 | 71 | Maillet | 77 | 76 | 77 | 70 | Ratiy | 80 | 73 | 58 | 70 | Cort Nielsen | 77 | 75 | 71 | 74 | Eastman | 80 | 75 | 69 | 71 | Grmay | 77 | 73 | 71 | 74 |
As you would firstly guess from the mountain stat Denifl and Amador should be the outright favourites. Well we've learned that firstly not always the best climber wins and secondly back-up stats do matter a lot. Speaking of that Amador should have an advantage over Denifl, but other guys also offer a big skillset for this.
In first line we talk about Daniel Martin, who has a promising Acceleration and Hill stat on his side. Then there is Dekker, who got that cracking resistance once he got away. Third up of this list of more than secondary favourites is the defending champion, Contador. He knows how to win here and adds some good allround qualities to that.
Of the other contenders we mostly have to count in a quartett of southern americans. Monsalve leads this with surely stats that are worth of a winner, but also Aeropostal duo Rujano and Duarte as well as Marquez, the man for Ian Butlers Cinderella stories, should have a shot on this given their strong back-up skillset of acceleration and Resistance.
The last guys to go onto in detail are Berhane and Brajkovic. Berhane will wave up the flags of the Africans here although he's lacking some acceleration, the same issue goes for Brajkovic, who covers his missing punch with other great back-ups for Novatek.
Furthermore we find a lot of riders with upside potential. Spots on Pozzovivo, Chamorro, Roglic and Yates for that.
A breakaway is always very unlikely to win here, but never say never to that possibility. So here is the full startlist for you:

Thought the startlist would look better without the control team

Obligatory "we're-just-here-for-the-band". Amador to finally show his superiority in a classic, otherwise one among Martin, Dekker, Monsalve or Marquez to keep Sancor afloat.
I'm just hoping Malacarne or whoever do anything worth a screenshot to check out our jersey

Back to racing for us, unfortunately without any real chance to get a good result.
Hopefully Lövkvist and/or Cort Nielsen can sneak in to pts places. |

Yep, thanks for another well-written preview, croatia!
Happy we sent Cataldo to Japan, he wouldn't had a chance here anyway. Instead we're using the opportunity to showcase Maillet and our young guys in the break.
Amador for the win!

It'd be nice if Amador would win a race this year. My money is on Dekker though.

Eritrea doesnt count?
I get what you mean though, hopefully some better AI here than the last mountain classsic, to see results like that again would be painful.

Couldn't ask for much more from a preview.

C'mon Contador. Not much doing this season for him so far, maybe that will change on the race he won last season. |

I don't like the idea that we are just here for the band, we are actually just here for a brief reminder that Panayotov is a useless rider and will continue his preparation for failing our Osterich Rundfahrt goal later in the season, this time by ensuring that not only we do not have a representative in the break but also not a man interested in a result.
I mean, he has the Mo, Res and Acc for a top 20, so go win it Panayotov!
Bit of fun race for us then, hope Domagalski or someone joins the break, but I doubt it, so let's see Marquez win for Ian and of course thanks for the detailed preview Croatia!

Feel like Dekker will take this, having high resistance will be important with the way the route is set up. One hell of a race a head of us.

Ewww... a mountain... does it have cobbles? Not expecting anything here, a top 50 finish would be nice but again not expected.

Time to overperform Rujano. Expect both riders in the top 10 at least. |
