Ostdeutschland Tour: Discussion

After Bayern-Rundfahrt's cancellation, the German crowd begged for a replacement, which led to the foundation of this six-day stage race. Perhaps with the home team Rothaus-Aegon in mind, the route is fairly sprinter-friendly.

The opening prologue shouldn't cause too much problems for any of the riders, but instead it's the final stage that might decide the overall classification. Three categorized climbs in total, with a quite challenging climb up to Kleiner Knollen.

Much like the parcours, the startlist is looking very promising.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Nicolas Roche is leading a strong-looking ING team as probably the best rider for the sort of climbs stage 6 provides. Among his team mates we also have two potential early race leaders: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Dennis Van Winden and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Ismael Kip. Especially the latter, as he can both do a good prologue and steal chunks of bonus seconds through the mass sprints.

Roche's main contenders might be one from the half-German SRAM team. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Linus Gerdemann might be the most complete stage racer in the race with an excellent climbing-TT combo, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Heinrich Haussler is the kind of sprinter that could actually stay in contact with the front on the demanding final stage.

Another German with a good chance of victory is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Patrik Sinkewitz. Although his capacity has somewhat decreased recently, he has still shown on several occasions this year that he remains one of the best climbers. Vueling also has a contender for the prologue in the talented young i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Emilien Viennet.

Those three teams are on paper the big favourites for the overall, but it's obviously hard to predict how the final stage will actually turn out.

Strong timetriallists like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Dominique Cornu, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Lars Boom, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Ignas Konovalovas and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Vasil Kiryenka will certainly not give up any seconds gained on the climbers in the prologue without a fight.

Then there's also the rest of the puncheurs. The home public's national champion i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Dietmar Mehr-Wenige will obviously try his best to please the fans, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Gracjan Lejman and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Ben Hermans being other examples.

The sprinters should absolutely not be discounted either. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Danilo Kupfernagel, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Simon Geschke and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Romain Feillu are some of the more prominent names.

New name, but same route as last year's Deutschland Tour. The way PCM12 is going, the race will probably be considerably less break dominated than last season.

Roche should take this, but the last stage can prove surprising tough.

Awful decision to send Cucinotta here. I planned to much how I would act instead of how the AI decides to act...
So I can only hope for Cucinotta to lose contact early, so Geschke can go for the win on 1-2 stages. Actually only stage 3&4 look promising now.

I hope Boom can survive longer on the final climb than last season. Then he should deliver some nice points.

Gerdemann or Sinkewitz should do very well here with their national bonus.

If the winner of this race is decided in the last stage, I have high hopes that the Mehr-Wenige can win a great result. Home with the bonus he is perhaps the 3rd or 4th best puncheur. Gajek can also be fighting for top 10 at some of the steps, while Irvine will try their luck at the first stage.

I wonder can Haussler pull a 'Hoffman'?

At least one stage win and a podium in the GC are the goals. Geschke shouldn't be underrated as he might get some bonus seconds on the flat stages and is able to survive the hard climbs of the final stage.

Of course i won't complain if Haussler does a "Hoffman" but i can't see that happening even if he wins all flat stages.

I've extremely high expectations for this race, especially since Roche has been doing really well for the last few races. I hope that the trend with the second place finishes will stop thanks to a win!

Thanks for the preview Pellizotti, the two germans will be tough to crack.

fintas
Not bad start this race, Irvine with a good performance although Mehr-Wenige has already had a significant loss but nothing is lost ...

A bit annoying that Cornu is here, but I hope that Kip will take the leaders jersey before handing it over to Roche Pfft

Cornu is carrying my team this year, I swear. The win on the first stage is always the most lucrative so that's a great result and even if he hasn't got the jersey come the final stage (which I presume he will not) he has a high GC position so that he should be able to get a decent overall result.

But for now though the stage win is what I wanted.

I had hoped for a bit more in this prologue. 2-3 positions higher maybe. But the 5th is not a bad start either.

Missed the win on the stage #1 Prologue, but scored points with Patrick Gretsch finishing 3rd. Congrats to Cornu and Bpost for taking an important point generating lead.

AMEX's best GC man is probably Sylvain Chavanel. He lost +0'20 on the prologue but that should be recoverable on the final stage. Over the next 4 stages AMEX may learn a great deal about the rest of thier season. Danilo Kupfernagel need to challenge this sprint finishes and earn points.

Top 10 is certainly possible with Kono, top 5 if we get lucky. Lowe is set up well after the TT, too. 2 in top 15 if I'm very lucky.

Congrats to Bpost, though. TT riders are proving to be very reliable this season.

Fine performance by Viennet. Time for Sinkewitz to win something. Given this is my win goal, I'd appreciate it quite much Pfft

Great win for Gavazzi. Altough the leader changes, the team doesn't change.

roturn
Gavazzi continues to have a good season.

Actually I am not surprised that Geschke wasn`t positioned very well. But I am highly disappointed by Cucinotta here. If he already takes Geschke`s chance to sprint he should at least go for his own chance...

Ummm... Okay? Not sure quite what to think there.

Well, there are three more stages for Haussler to win...
