Press conference revealing the project Team Lotto - Cervélo
Some words from the PR manager, you know what the question would be..
I have to say now he have finally! a new secure future and I am really happy to reveal this project Lotto - Cervélo, Lotto sponsoring cycling since the 80ies has a big tradition at cycling and Cervélo with their high-tech bikes and they are exclusive sponsoring us with their bikes. Both are very strong partners.
Some words from the PR manager and then "And now the questions!"
Why are you calling it a project?
It will be 3s and 7s Cyclings (note: the teams license holders since 2010) first season at the ProTour and I really have no idea after 3 seasons at the now ProContinentalTour what will it look like racing against the big teams like Vesuvio, Festina or Santander and racing against the cycling greatest Tom Boonen.
Also being the 1st placed PCT team is always a great burden. Can we hold us at the ProTour at our first PT season? So thats really a project, a team project.
Imagine the transfers will be going to your favour, what team set-up would you like to have?
I will go for a mixed team set-up where our team can compete in stage races and one-day classics.
So I am really looking forward to sign a cobble rider who would be our first cobble rider since the first season 2010 with Kopp and Eichler as our cobble duo.
What races are you looking forward to?
I am really looking forward to all of the great stage races and monuments.
The whole first PT season will be epical for us as the last Wildcard we got for a PT race was 2011 for the "not so" prestigious Badaling International Classic on the 2008 Olympics road race course.
Which races might be crucial for your team?
It's a bit too early as the PCMDAILYUCI hasn't released the full calendar for 2013 but I would say any belgian race in general as of our main and lead sponsor Lotto.
I think the Fleche Wallonne will be the race we will set our most ambitious goal.
But I hope we could get also a stage win at the Tour de France that was the goal of founding the team 2010: to win once a stage of Le Tour.
You said you wanted some riders like A. Schleck, Nibali etc. before this announcement after the Cannondale deal was vetoed by Meiji, will you still hunt them?
I can say with the new sponsors I will look for 1-2 more belgian riders like Vantomme. But it will be still very multi national as we want some success.
You also said every rider is available, is that still true?
Yes, it's still true. But I have to say that our good riders will not go for a Apple and a pint.. I won't answer any very disappointing offer..
You got Zaini, Libert, Moschella and Stauff back after loaning them out to Wiggle, Carmuse and Vesuvio. Are you looking forward to them?
Of course! I really would like to see how they do in our team. Especially as they have the latest ProTour experience of our riders!
Zaini could surprise next season as he is much stronger now after being a luxury helper for Ponzi, so I guess he will have learned a lot how to race the classics.
I was really surprised that Libert got for Carmeuse a 2nd place at the KOM ranking of the Volta a Catalunya, one of the best results from Carmeuse last season! He will be a good helper for our mountain captains.
Moschella will be also help the mountain captains, he is a very good downhiller.
And for Stauff, what a rider. I was at the Tour of Qatar last season to watch him and he leadout Swift to a stage win and from a not that good position to a 2nd place. In the end 8th at the GC. I hope he will do the same for Ciolek last season and helping him with Rabon, Lequatre and Hochmann to a stage win or two.
What about the jerseys? I mean Bianchi ones were very colourful or let's say distinctive.
We haven't a jersey yet but I think you can expect black, red, white and dark blue. I guess we will still have a jersey that isn't comparable to anyones at the PT.
Last question please!
Do you have any idea why any PCT winner that was winning on Bianchi bikes was folding or had serious sponsor problems?
I have no idea Sir!
Thank you very much!
Also you are now allowed to write in this thread

Good luck! A shame you won't ride Bianchi or Cannondale bikes though, but I guess you'll manage without |

Nice switch, good luck with finding the good designer for your jersey. I wonder if riders like Rabon and Hochmann would be glad to stay in CT with another team maybe.

Hochmann is more likely to leave than Rabon obviously but you never know which offers will come, as I said if there is a good offer even Claeys or Ciolek might leave but it has to be a good acceptable one for me. So no Ciolek for 200k or something like that.
I will re-sign with every rider but Gustov, Matzbacher and Odebrecht will be released to the Free Agents.

There is a rumour about Lotto - Cervélo willing to take Tesfar Teklit on loan to give him some ProTour experience. A statement of the manager:
"I guess we have 1-3 places like last season for young talents to give them all the now ProTour experience they need.
But I have to say that there are riders and "riders" so I would look into how much I would will to take over the wage as most of them will be very useful domestiques.
I think there would be a maximum of 50% of the wage that I would take over for a really talented rider."

Simply Red Bull bring over some celebratory champagne to their CTour rivals and formally congratulate them on winning the division.
Team manager Smowz cannot resist talking a little of business on hearing of the possible availabilty of Frantisek Rabon.
He says quite openly to Rin that he would give a large sum of money for the Czech punchaer.

With Hubert Schwab being the newly crowned Swiss road champion, the UBS - BMC team manager has expressed his strong desire to bring him to the Swiss team. While the UBS - BMC team is likely to have budget difficulties due to failed objectives, the manager believes that things could still work out through a trade.
Are there any UBS - BMC riders that you would be interested in?

With your sponsor change and moving up to the PT they are rumors the some of your Spanish riders are feeling a little bit uncomfortable. How are you going to handle them and is there any possibility that a few could be on their way out to join say the CSC-Orbea squad back at the PCT level?

The Lotto manager thanked Simply Red Bull for their visit to the Lottos new HQ in Brussels, Belgium and the champagne and said:
"When one of the sponsors can send someone with a balloon near the space, then they could afford Rabon But I think when I have a look at your roster, I see at least 1 for Lotto interesting rider "
and gave Smowz a big pat on the back.
The present reporters at the opening of the new teams HQ asked the manager about the rumours of Hubert Schwab possibly going to Team UBS - Lapierre:
"Hubert is a very good climber and is actually one of our helpers to the maybe coming up climber we will look after. I can't see a deal at the moment for him as at the moment we have a lot of rider for money offers but money can't ride and win stages or races."
There were also questions about Team CSC - Orbea interested in Lottos spanish riders:
"Belgium might be a little bit cold for southern europeans but Lotto is a big name in cycling so I think they are at 50/50. They could go for good offers but as I said to your question before, money alone will not win you any race especially with a salary cap of the PDUCI Pro, ProContinental or Continental Tour."
Asked about the "Everyone could go for a right offer" statement:
"I think we could rebuild a bit this season, so it's still so that everyone is available but for a right offer. I would hope a bit more transfer offers or requests that are including riders. I mean the offers doesn't have to include just a swap rider for rider.."

Team Lotto - Cervélo press release: Goals, races, riders and our focus'
The management and the staff took the last week to sit down and discuss a lot about our team/riders we have at the moment, the sponsors who are on board, the races we would like to shine etc. and with this press release we would like to inform you about the results:
So at first the goals and races we would like to focus on next season.
It is very obviously that with that team we have at the moment and the races we shined last season, that the focus will be on the ardennes classics.
But we will still retain good sprinters in our team but they might be another ones we have at the moment. These sprinters should get some good results at stage races, classics or even stage wins at the grand tours.
Also we talked a lot about adding cobble riders and the result is that we look after possible transfers/free agents but won't be chasing them like they would be the most important riders of all. So we won't be disappointed if we don't get one.
So to the teams riders and focus on nationalities.
At first we will look out for more belgian riders. We would like to field a strong team at the belgian championships next year and preparing them if it's one of our most important races. Neverminding about the profile if it's pancake flat or hilly.
Otherwise we would like to have still a very internatiooal team but won't have single riders for a nation. So we will have at least 2-3 riders of a country in our team.
So we will look out for these nationalities at the transfers/free agents small note: it doesn't mean that all of these will end up in our team depends a lot on things we can foresee:
Belgium
Italy
Germany
Poland
Netherland
France
Australia
New Zealand
Great Britain
South Africa
And so we could give now a more clear picture of the availability of our riders:
Contracts will be renewed - Offer needs to be extraordinary to get one of them
Maxime Monfort
Dimitri Claeys
Jude Libert
Not really extraordinary
Klaas Vantornout
Contracts will be renewed - Offer needs to be very good to get one of them
Gerald Ciolek
Andreas Stauff
Tommy Zaini
Artemio Moschella
Geoffroy Lequatre
Piet Rooijakkers
Piotr Mazur
Contracts will be renewed - Will listen to any offer
Koldo Gil (Spanish road champion)
Juan Jóse Cobo
Manuel Lloret
David de la Fuente
Javier AramendÃa
Frantisek Rabon
JÃri Hochmann
Hubert Schwab (Swiss road champion)

Heineken could be interested in bringing Juanjo Cobo or de la Fuente on board for the coming season. Such interest is tempered by a potential wage spikes after Lotto's fantastic season.

If our Sources are to be believed then Chris Robinson is keen to add the Swiss Champion Hubert Schwab to the new Sauber squad. Apparently the main stumbling block could end up being whether a rider of his quality would be willing to ride in the CT next year even if it means he's garunteed a leader's role.
is there any indication how He might view such a move?

Clever move to let the spaniards go, those should bring you shitloads of money, or good riders, seeing that quite a lot of teams are now focusing on spanish riders.
Tommy Zaini said that he would be interested in joining Ulissi to help him win the Milano-San Remo once more. Any comments on that?

At this stage of the off-season I can say that Schwab, Cobo and de la Fuente are more likely to go than Zaini.
Zaini is very useful and his downhilling skills are outstanding and could be really useful at the classics in our opinion.
Plus with the teams strategy to have at least 3 riders of a nation in our team, that could lead into keeping 3 of the 5 available spaniards if there aren't enough offers for all of them, as we would like to focus to be very present at the national championships our riders are taking part.
Schwab is so at this stage the most likely rider to go.
And I am still prefering offers/deals that includes a rider as I think it would hurt our first season at the ProTour a lot if we are just selling and shipping the riders and have to hope a lot that the Free Agents we will look after will land at Lotto. And thats just not possible.

There are rumors about Lotto - Cervélos team signings in the newspapers today.
The report says that Lotto - Cervélo will do everything to sign the italian road and time trial champion Damiano Cunego and Vincenzo Nibali.
The source quoted the team manager:
"I wouldn't be a ProTour manager if I would ignore them.
They are the only riders I will look after from the Free Agents because if I would also look after for others, then both won't end up at our team which would be very bad. We need ProTour caliber riders to stay at the ProTour."
They also quoted earlier reports that Gerald Ciolek will leave Lotto in a transfer to Aegon for Maxime Vantomme.
Plus the report listed riders Lotto will look after when the transfer window opens:
Adrian Malori from Milka - AVG
Thomas de Gendt from Milka - AVG
Tosh van der Sande from Caisse d'Epargne (former Team Spyker)
Jurgen van den Broeck from ING Cycling Project
Justo Tenorio from Santander

I presume your interest in Vantomme is dependent on renewals. If his wage is still high, bringing in Vantomme isnt going to help your chances of buying Cunego

I hope he will land in the wage category where Ciolek will land this season as Ciolek will be more expensive because he was more successful last season I think.
But I have always a plan B/C/D up to Z like last season which got me Cobo for example but no PT riders.

Good luck getting Cunego
And I'm pretty sure Caisse d'Epargne is just a secondary sponsor of "CT cycling"
