2011's Spanish national championships was a pretty tame affair with Koldo Gil taking a surprise victory. Today's race looks wide open again with Santander looking to stamp their undoubted authority over the nationals.
Of course it seems like every other team are here to stop them but the team in red and white keep it tight in the opening 50km before allowing a group of 15 up the road.
Oscar Freire
Javier AramendÃa
Daniel Allonca (racing in Cerne colours)
Francisco Perez Sanchez
José Ivan Gutiérrez Palacios
Haimar Zubeldia
Vicente Reynès
José Antonio Pecharroman
José Joaquin Rojas Gil
Sergio Pardilla
Aberlardo Ablenado
Juan Carlos Rienda Segura
Enrique Salgueiro
and
Egoitz Murgoitio
get up the road.
The race is centred around a 7km pretty fierce climb that may just tip things in the favour of the pure climbers. Indeed it is tough enough so that Santander's gentle increase in pressure is able to snuff out the slender lead these 15 had got.
With this breakaway over a strong climber Igor Antón goes clear.
Given the chance to lead this year, it has been a step in the right direction for the Basque man. On the subsequent flat section Anton is joined by five other riders.
Bianchi have craftely got both David De la Fuente and Koldo Gil up with Anton. Also present however is Spanish stage racers Beñat Intxausti and José Angel Gomez Marchante along with veteren José Ivan Gutiérrez Palacios.
Just behind these six are are duo from Cafe de Colombia Jesus Tendero and Francisco Perez Sanchez. However the climb hurts these two's chances of catching the front six.
The gap between the leaders and the Santander led pack is six minutes, this is putting the lead Spanish team under pressure.
The key section is the flat section between the penultimate and final climb. It is a real battle between Santander and the leaders, Santander have everyone on hand to try and snake their way up to the leaders.
Alas with 25km to go the leaders have 4 minutes, it is hard to see that the climb is tough enough to bring back. Besides these are some of the best climbers in the world up front. Memories of brilliant Vuelta moments for both Intxausti and Gomez Marchante come flooding back.
Behind Juan José Cobo looks to break the rhythm of the chase by attacking.
But by the time we get onto the climb Angel Madrazo spreads his wings and takes matters into his own hands.
He reduced the gap down to under three minutes, but up front the wise riders also are able to up the pace riding themselves of Guitterez Palacios.
In another Vuelta flashback we see Alberto Contador trying to chase down Madrazo. You can tell the course is not super hard as Cobo, Samuel Sánchez Gonzalez and Daniel Moreno follow him.
Anton doesn't fancy this ending in a sprint and despite the increased pressure is able to accelerate again away from this lead group.
He holds 25 seconds over the top and descends like a mad man.
Things flatten out with 5km to go and his lead is nudging 30 seconds, the fans now know they are denied a Santander win but they now root for Spanish second squad CSC.
Bianchi's De Le Fuente sacrifices himself for Gil and leads out the sprint behind having kepts Anton in view.
Anton tries to hold with 1500m left he still has a few bike lengths.
But by the kite the four riders are on him, still a big question mark over who will win.
Anton is fading and Gomez Marchante, Intxausti and Gil are closing up on De La Fuente.
Gil is coming through as his teammate roars him on, but Gomez Marchante is battling.
Intxausti has nothing extra but there is nothing between the two at the front.
Gil just edges it, taking the Spanish title once more at the age of 34.

After losing their Team Time Trial world championships, the Spanish will be watching the time trial with interest.
Madrazo has excellent time trial skills for such a small climber and Santander send him off early.
His times of:
through the checks look unbeatable. Indeed it sees of the likes of Intxausti, the Sanchez's and defending champion Abal.
But Rubén Plaza is up to the task taking the fastest first check with 23.51.
That is until Justo Tenorio better's Plaza's time by one second.
With Madrazo off so early conditions could swing the times one way or the other. But Plaza maintains his superiorty over Madrazo through the second check and the finish setting a time 12 seconds faster than the Vuelta 2012 champion.
But Madraza can cheer on his great friend and teammate Tenorio here, the young deluxe domestique loves a chrono. However he has to work hard to finish four seconds inside of Plaza.
Tenorio takes his national time trial title.
