Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha Discussion

Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha

History

Praha – Karlovy Vary – Praha entered the WT in 2013 as a one-day race and continued that way for 3 seasons, before transitioning to a 4 stage race in 2016. 2016 also saw the beginning of an incredibly dominant streak with Taylor Phinney winning every edition from 2016-2021. Of course, such a strong streak was also accompanied by Phinney winning the long time trial in each of those seasons as well. 2022 saw Phinney’s first upset as Marlen Zmorka found his was to the top of the podium with Phinney just 16 seconds in the rear. Los Pollos Hermanos truly invested in this race in 2022 as they went 1-3-4. 2023 will see a new winner however, as Phinney skips out and Los Pollos decide not to invest in this as a PT race.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/top_praha.jpg

Stage 1: A pancake flat 5.0km prologue. A huge opportunity for one of many to grab the leader’s jersey
Stage 2: A sprinter’s stage with some minor undulation late in the stage. A quick hill in the final 3km could disrupt the sprint trains
Stage 3: A time trial to remember. A 60.0km relatively flat monster of a race against the clock. The winner here should win the overall
Stage 4: Another sprinter opportunity, but with an opportunity for a major breakaway given the early climb. Some bumps along the way at the stage’s end mean that this could be a complicated finish

As we look at the favorites across the three categories, it is important to recognize that no one falls within all three lists – and especially important, none of the top sprinters make the long time trial favorites list. This means that we should almost guarantee the overall victory to the best long time trialist unless the 60.0km TT come down to 2-3 seconds.

Wurtz should be the top favorite overall given his massive strength in the longer TT, even though he only finished 14th last year. His 2nd place in 2021 and 2020 shows his real potential. Wirtgen and Durbridge are the other two major favorites with each getting a slight bit better over the shorter race. Wirtgen’s 9th last year also shows he could take the win and especially with a couple extra seconds from the prologue. Again, his 2021 season earned his best result in 4th, so both will be looking to repeat their better luck. Durbridge has not attempted the race since 2017 where he placed 13th.

Nothing race for us really. Maybe Kamna can get a top 50, but he might get dropped on the flats with how this season is going for him.

I have no clue what to expect. Normally I would expect a solidt prologue from Coquard who could then chase the leaders jersey on Stage 2 and another Stage result on Stage 4, with Vlatos chasing GC succes.

I suspect Vlatos might still be a GC threat. Maybe Ioannidis and Kiriakidis for some depth top 50GC aswell.

Obviously a key race for Durbridge, who will hopefully perform in the long TT.. other than that we kinda rely on our roleurs to maybe show our colors in the road stages, that's it.

Thanks for the preview!

The last scoring race for us before the cobbles start. I need a good performance from both Lammertink and Howson.

Thanks for the preview Smile

It's really weird not seeing Phinney here btw. Can't remember the last time he decided to skip such a perfect route-race Smile

Van Poppel did really well last year in the sprints here. I think he's a bit high on the favorites list to see a repeat of that this year Pfft

No ambitions for the GC. Anything in that department will be a bonus.

He needs to skip some obvious races because a GT.

Considering we have both secondary leaders Ganna and Kanter here in at least sub-favorite roles, this could be a pivotal race in our season with the potential PPRD on offer here if both perform well.

I hope the more consistent nature of prologues so far this season allows for Filippo to get on the podium on day 1, which combined with hopefully a lower Top 5 - higher Top 10 performance on the long TT can result in a Top 5 overall.
Max has the formerly infamous position of likely 4th best sprinter present, which I hope will be an impactful one this time. Steimle is here to help him, while the rest of the team focuses on GC depth points and maybe another U25 surprise result.

In a best case scenario, this could be a race which sees us in the Top 5 on every single stage, which would obviously be massive for our (admittedly already promising) rankings position.

tastasol
Nowhere to hide - we need a huge result here now. The very least a podium and we are of course aiming for the win. It's been a good race for us throughout the years, so hopefully we'll perform here again this year. And hopefully not a result like last year for Würtz... Fingers crossed.

Marcovdw
Wondering why I didn't bring Bjerg here. Probably a planning oversight.

Anyway, Cattaneo and Dennis could secure a good result, and Ahlstrand might be awake for the sprints.

The gamble to put Kragh in Nederland and not here didn’t work out. Easy to regret now, but that’s how it goes. Not much doe us here, then, but looking forward to see the TT specialists have a go at a proper long and straightforward TT! Grin
