Tour of the Battenkill
--
Preview
The cobblestone season ends this weekend with the double header of the Rheden GP and the Tour of the Battenkill. As the season as a whole draws to a close, a lot is at stake for teams all across the board. Who will get a much-needed boost?
This is not one of those races where you have all of the cobblestone sectors stuffed into the final half or third - we start with lots of them from the get-go. There are also a bunch of hills spread throughout, but there’s really only one that we’d expect to be particularly consequential: the Patterson Hill Road, some 10 kilometers from the finish with slopes of over 10%. The main task for the favorites will be to get there intact and then survive the beast as best as possible.
| FL | HI | CO | RS | ST | SP | AC | Wisniowski | 80 | 71 | 83 | 76 | 75 | 73 | 76 | Gerts | 77 | 78 | 81 | 80 | 76 | 72 | 70 | Kasperkiewicz | 76 | 74 | 81 | 77 | 75 | 59 | 66 | Trentin | 74 | 74 | 81 | 71 | 76 | 75 | 76 | Pedersen | 77 | 69 | 81 | 80 | 78 | 78 | 77 | Altur | 75 | 70 | 82 | 70 | 75 | 72 | 68 | Blythe | 76 | 66 | 82 | 71 | 76 | 76 | 73 | Senechal | 75 | 67 | 82 | 74 | 79 | 69 | 74 | Kamyshev | 77 | 65 | 82 | 75 | 81 | 66 | 60 | Zepuntke | 72 | 69 | 82 | 72 | 79 | 72 | 65 |
Despite the Rheden GP happening simultaneously, the vast majority of top cobblestone riders have made their way to the US instead of the Netherlands. Wisniowski tops the list as the best pure cobbler and flat engine with (presumably) sufficient hill skills and a strong punch in case he needs to win a small group sprint.
Then we have the more explicitly puncheur-orientated cobblers, including Gerts, easily the best puncheur of any of the top favorites. But Kasperkiewicz and Trentin are strong uphill riders, too, and will hope to benefit from that.
Pedersen and Altur lead the guys that aren’t necessarily top puncheurs, but they still possess the necessary skills for a great result. The Dane is just an all around beast, but of course may have to sacrifice his own ambitions for Wisniowski. Blythe is a strong sprinter, both Tinkoff guys Senechal and Kamyshev sport impressive backup stats but are among the poorer puncheurs here, and Zepuntke is just decent all around, without any specialities but no marked weaknesses either.
| FL | HI | CO | RS | ST | SP | AC | Van Hooydonck | 73 | 71 | 80 | 74 | 75 | 61 | 72 | Debesay | 75 | 74 | 79 | 79 | 75 | 69 | 78 | Per | 79 | 70 | 79 | 75 | 74 | 74 | 74 | Fenn | 72 | 61 | 79 | 71 | 75 | 70 | 69 | David | 74 | 75 | 78 | 74 | 76 | 70 | 73 | Baugnies | 76 | 70 | 78 | 70 | 77 | 63 | 70 |
In the second tier of team leaders, we have some very intriguing names. Van Hooydonck may be the best pure puncheur, although Per perhaps has a claim to that as well. But the spotlight might have to be on David and Debesay - 4th and 5th here last year -, who will relish the hilly parts and try to use them to their advantages.
Fenn and Baugnies are arguably long shots, the former crippled by his terrible hill stat, the latter by poor speed and a general age-related decline.
| FL | HI | CO | RS | ST | SP | AC | Sulimov | 73 | 70 | 79 | 71 | 77 | 65 | 71 | Zubov | 68 | 63 | 79 | 69 | 70 | 61 | 69 | Ferreira | 73 | 68 | 79 | 70 | 74 | 71 | 69 | Gaday | 71 | 75 | 78 | 72 | 75 | 71 | 73 | Moulingui | 74 | 71 | 78 | 71 | 71 | 65 | 68 | Owen | 73 | 69 | 78 | 71 | 73 | 64 | 71 | Ringheim | 72 | 67 | 78 | 71 | 75 | 73 | 75 | Sinkeldam | 74 | 75 | 77 | 70 | 74 | 68 | 68 | Benoot | 71 | 79 | 76 | 74 | 75 | 69 | 71 |
Lots of guys in this field who aren’t their team’s 1a or 1b option but still might fight for a good result on their own.
Finally, here’s the full startlist:

Can't wait to watch Altur blow our final Goal of the season. As usual on cobbles, more interested in how well Wolverine goes as well as the youngsters.

Time for one of my favourite races of the season, obviously we're not taking part but I always love me some Battenkill!

Should be an all in for Wisniowski kind of race for us. It's well suited to him, so hopefully he can snatch a win in his last race of the the ordinary season (together with ToNE) and possibly his last race for Grieg.

Hoping for a good performance to keep our top 15 standings goal possible. Tough race, tough competition. We could have sent Trentin to Rheden, but since we had Lander as well, figured we might as well split them up and gives ourselves multiple chances.
We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the preview!

Stacked startlist and David can only get into the outsiders' list for this one! We are hoping he can find his magic from last season once again. It's his last race as leader for the season. We need a big result.
Thanks for the preview

Hadn't seen the preview was up already. I'm really happy with Kasperkiewicz in these kind of races this season. It seemed like he missed the deciding attack at first but he was able to rejoin and a podium is all I can ask for.
Also a really strong race from the rest of the team, even if it does not transfer completely to the result sheet. Marzuki and Ferreira joining the mid-race break and Darbinyan and Vanthourenhout did a really good job staying with Kasperkiewicz almost until the final selection was made.
Thanks for a great report, cunego, and congrats to tastasol on a great victory! |

Altur failed our Goal massively (not a surprise, can't wait to see his renewals request). Wolverine was boss! Smart to attack away and stuck in there to match his "leader". Guess who's getting all the training investment next season.
Perez making a showing as well to latch onto the early break and hang on long after he should have as rookie. Edmo (not a youngster) but quietly into the Top25 showing some semblance of depth (shame he doesn't fit our sponsor needs, he'd be a good training candidate as well).
At least we did ok in two of the Goals, knew i shouldn't have relied upon the MG's worst ever training spend.

The team really tried there. I was scratching my head again at why we had Sinkeldam leading so soon while teams with stronger leaders and manpower sat back. But at least we backed it up decently well. Trentin just lost his legs at the very last there, but 6th is still a great result in a PTHC race. Hopefully this is enough to keep us in the top 15.
Congrats to Grieg! Active and strong all race, as always, and they finished it off perfectly. Thanks for a great result cunego!

Per did really well, sadly positioning did him dirty. Guess we need to train him just for the positioning...

A good result from Gerts, but a podium would have been better to reward the work made by the rest of the team.

Great to see McCormick loanee Rhim getting some camera time on a punchy cobbled race, pretty much the opposite of his skillset but he showed the fighting spirit.

Thanks guys! Thought we did a great race, so very happy to see Wisniowski getting the win as a result. All though the ToNE isn't over, we will put this down as his last race of the ordinary season. After a bit mediocre year last season, he's really found himself this year. We'll have to see if it's his last race or if he will come back next season, but if this is the end, it's surely a very fitting end!
Thanks for the report, cunego!
