Seems to me that MG is in trouble, we have some 60+ teams but we had only 5-6 persons lifting all the workload, the other 90% did nothing or very little to keep the game flowing and that was already an vulnerable situation.
Now core contributors have been absent for quite some time, resulting in no rankings updates due to missing races and I guess that soon the few reporters left can’t keep up and reports will come slower and slower.
With MG in serious trouble, the database team also missing people with time to contribute, stage forum alive but not exactly kicking – and no Stage Database for 2018 ? Even though asked many time no answer to why.
Ya PCM daily may not be dead, but is clearly very dusty, and if the many issues we got are not be addressed quite soon, it looks like we are on a downward spiral.

I am one of that 90%, so I can only apologize for my lack of help. I really should be reporting more, Right now my PC can barely go an hour without blue screening, so that's my current excuse, but the fact of the matter is there have been times where I definitely could have made time to help and I haven't. And I'm sorry for that.
As far as MG goes though, I'm not especially worried to be honest. Yes, MG is not super active right now, but it always comes in waves. A couple of years ago we had an offseason of over half a year where it seemed like MG would never come back, but it did and rebounded pretty well. Sure, apps and activity have gone down, but I'm not as worried for MG as I am most site initiatives right now to be honest.
And of course, thank you for all your hard work Tamijo!

Btw. SKY killed cycling as Cyanide is slowly killing PCM, so here you have my two reasons to not follow those two things so much as i did (ofc my work, my new university study i started and my family has nothing to do with that).
I think you'll actually find Sky have helped to regenerate cycling after Armstrong nearly destroyed it. They've introduced it to a new audience in Britain who have established themselves as a new power in the sport to rival the classic powers of France, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy and Spain. Whether that will be long term once the British Sky team goes will remain to be seen.
They were also probably key to the growth of this website seeing as this is an English language site and Sky brought a huge number of English speakers to the sport, some of whom will have found their way here.
You can hate them for their success as much as you like, but you can't deny the impact they have had on cycling is huge and will be felt for many years to come.

Re: MG, I'm sure things will get super active again around transfers but yes the situation right now is a bit depressing. With things like no standings and no MG bets races are just... races. Big names like SN and Tsmoha disappearing is a shame, too, especially the latter in terms of keeping a good reporting pace.
I have plenty of free time, sadly eye problems will limit my PC time for a while so I'm stuck doing smaller work, though writing previews like I did with Aquarius or perhaps writing standings updates once they arrive is a possibility in case that makes anyone else able to report more. |

There's actually an interesting discussion to be had on whether Sky's investment in cycling was good or bad in the long term (speaking internationally that is, like Armstrong did in America, Sky had a huge positive impact in Britain and if they go out quietly, unlike Armstrong, that impact should remain after their departure).
On the one hand, they invested heaps of money in the sport and attracted lots of English speakers to the sport, but on the other, they often inspired very passive racing and I read an article (I'll try to find the source but I can't remember where atm), where they were saying that Sky deterred sponsors from the sport, because even investing 15 million euros for a WT team wasn't enough to have a shot at winning big races, so their departure could mean more sponsors come to the sport when they see teams with lower budgets win.

In terms of the whole 'PCM.daily is dying' discussion, several valid points have already been made.
The way I see it, it's mostly a structural problem. Firstly, PC gaming is declining, and it's declining fast. Less people are buying PCM, thus (obviously) reducing the amount of potential members.
Secondly, in the same department of issues, people are using their tablets and mobile phones more and more often rather than going to the PC. Tablets and phones are made for consuming content, not creating it, and thus you will see less activity on sites like PCM.daily that are basically based on user-created content.
Third, you have Steam, you have YouTube, you have Twitch - not to mention Facebook and Twitter. Communities are now more likely to emerge and thrive at platforms like those rather than individual sites such as PCM.daily.
If you look at PCM communities in general, you will see a huge decline across the world. Scandinavia, which historically has one of the strongest and most loyal fanbases - well, it's completely gone. PCMNorge (Norway) has shut down, PCMGeeks, PCMFreaks, PCMScandinavia, PCMdk (all Denmark) and whatever they've all been called have shut down. The latest news item on Benelux' largest community, PCMFocus, is from April 2017. Still activity in the forum, but you get the point. PPDB has been gone for years. France, as far as I know, doesn't even have a 'regular' PCM news site, only forums.
Still plenty of forum activity at various sites, and since I'm out of the game I may not be aware of new communities. But as said - PCM.daily's decline is very much a result of the general structural issues.
That being said, there's obviously a lot that PCM.daily could have done which has not been done - e.g. a stronger presense on 'new' media such as Twitch and YouTube, making a mobile friendly website, evolving the community on social media etc. etc. It could have helped slow the decline, but in the end - well, the result would eventually be the same.
Really, really good points.
In addition the majority of internet-users have changed behaviours in order to find answers. More are using search engines like google - which makes things more transparent than ever. I don't really have to create a profile and be an active member of one site to find answers to my concerns. As you said, a lot of new platforms and streams etc where we don't have to involve ourselves and have an opinion. We just generally like to be the 'viewers'.
Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever.

Merry christmas to you all!
I'll mention that seeing how the site activity is coming down for natural reasons I will try to contribute, and to ask also for everyone to try and bring in new members as a new mini-game is coming shortly

This is a problem a lot of users could be facing. Maybe a tweet on the official account to let everybody know that they need to access the site through https would be a good idea.

Hi All
The new year brings the impending start of the 2019 PCM Daily Velogames Championship.
Given the recent discussion in this thread on the recent lack of forum activity and the decrease in membership in general I though it would be good to drum up some support for the Velogames Championship from some of the long standing regulars of the forum who don't play at the moment.
The game has gone from strength to strength in the last 3 years, with its select group of hardcore players, which resulted in Ian Russell actually having some competition last season and Ember being crowned the 2018 Champion.
Anyway, the game is easy to participate in and isn't a major drain on your free time. Simply enter teams into the various Velogames competitions throughout the season, enter the PCMDaily League and score points to go towards the overall league table.
The game has seen a steady decrease in the number of players scoring points throughout the last 3 years and it would be good to increase the number of players and therefore the competition for the overall championship.
If you're interested in playing then please visit the game thread in the Cycling Section of the Forum. Any questions you might have can be answered there.
Cheers
Ringo182
P.S - Loving the breast enlargement advert flashing at me while i write this. Not sure my work colleagues know where to look. Thanks PCMDaily Ad Bot
