Wisniowski and Smirnovs going so fast that Bardet didn't make the time limit. I take that as a good sign! Good to see Lukasz perform at his best level, hopefully he can continue with that.

Nice work by Altur to secure a second in Round 1, but still stings a little to start off by losing to a Portuguese rival. Hopefully he can continue to power away from everyone on the cobbled section.

Dieteren is through, that's all I care about in this Round. Was worried he'd fall in this round itself, but getting through the fastest heat is a good outcome. Next round will be tough again with three well-rounded opponents. Hope for the best again

Wisniowski up against Polanc (and Selander and Kaczmarek) in the next round, if I understood it right. Looking forward to that, should be a tough battle.

WCC happy to see Juarez progress to round 2 on his debut for our team. Would have been disappointed to be knocked-out in round 1, but things look tough across pretty much all the groups in round 2. Whatever the outcome now, can be considered a success to have at least not travelled all this way for just one 20 minutes burst of racing!  .
Great work trek in bringing this together, thanks!
I'd be interested if you could provide us a brief overview of how the round 1 events were raced - e.g. did folks generally wait for the cobbles before racing kicked off passed the 'pacer', did any race just sit exclusively behind the pacer and then just wait for a sprint, etc.

Selander advancing, but seeing the result I might have underestimated the cobbles. Marcos would've been a better fit for this race in hindsight.

Hategeka must’ve had a miserable final 1km if that screenshot is anything to go by
Pleased Jakub will be in the next round, and up against his natural idol in Wisniowski. Good experience for the young man, but no chance he gets through against Lukasz and Jan Polanc

Awesome idea, I'll oblige from memory (next round I'll post them alongside the results in greater detail), this time just in a spoiler (most races had some early unsuccessful attacks too but I can't remember who was in them so I wasn't able to mention them).
Spoiler Group A - Selander, Paajanen and Maes went from the start, though the latter was quickly unable to keep up, Boom and Van der Velde sat behind the pacer, attacked up to them and then escaped on the cobbles, with the latter just not able to quite keep up with Boom.
Group B - Only Hategeka was dropped as the remainder sprinted it out.
Group C - Smirnovs went before the cobbles, Wisniowski pulled Debessay and Archimandritis before dropping both on the cobbles and catching the leader, the Pole led the sprint and just held it to the finish.
Group D - Dieteren went early and had a sizeable gap, but Gaday and Polanc tore up the cobbles and the Slovene could never get round the Argentine.
Group E - Marzuki hit the detonator on the cobbles and nobody else stood a chance.
Group F - The most boring race, no attacks as they sat behind the pacer waiting for the bunch sprint.
Group G - Hugentobler attacked, never really had a large gap, led across the cobbles and surprisingly nobody ever managed to take the lead off him.
Group H - Bagdonas and Kirsch were dropped early as attacks went, but on the cobbles the leaders looked at each other, allowing a massive chance from the two behind to reconnect, before Bagdonas caught everyone off guard with a huge sprint.

Thanks trek. That helps bring it more to life thinking on how round 2 and beyond might progress.
It sounds in reality that a whole host of different race tactics emerged which is to some extent surprising, but helps make this event even cooler than it was before!  . Still unclear whether puncheurs who can cobble a bit or vice versa have the ascendency, hence the excitement of round 2 beckons!

It actually is very exciting to see that different strategies are played out every race and I think different tactics can advantage different riders, making it very interesting!
