Rohan Dennis wins by the third consecutive year the Australian ITT C'ship, while Hamish Bond wins it in New Zealand. Also, Caleb Ewan won the Criterium nationals in Australia

Bond on first view looked surprising to me. Though I just rarely ever heard of him but he was 3rd already in 2017 and as it was a rainy NC apparently he must have handled it the best.

No surprise in the Aussie Nats. Now looking forward for both road races. Hope Bennett can take the NZ one while AUS is wide open really.

I'm excited to see what Bond is able to do in the future, past Rower, he looks to have a strong build for a pure time-trialist.

As for Dennis, imo he did his obligation and he absolutely crushed the competition. Obviously only a little test but Porte doesn't appear to be tip top condition like he was last year

Bond is very impressive, rowing helps and as an NZ rower I know he'd have done a lot of cycling anyway. Still the efforts he's made since his rowing partner Eric Murray retired, to do decently in the WC last year and now beat some of NZ's best in the NC is very impressive. I'm pretty sure he's not looking at going pro, next goal is Commonwealth Games.

Is Portechkin doing Down Under? I figure now that he has won it last year finally he won't care so much about it anymore. For Tour prep it's certainly wiser to ride Down Under conservatively.

Alexander Edmondson is the new Australian road national champion

Bad luck for McCarthy, who was best of the rest as Edmondson and Harper were in the break.
That said, Edmondson is a pretty cool rider, I follow his progress for some time now and this hopefully is just the start of the next step.

For McCarthy though it's yet again a great start of the season. Always has this super form in January.

Though it must be said, that Edmondson and Harper broke clear in lap 14 of 16, iirc. So not an early breakaway group, that somehow survived. Pretty cool result from my point of view, since Edmondson still has the potential to do something notable once he focusses mainly on road cycling and not track as well. Also Harper is a likeable talent, even though he is not that kind of Hindley or Hamilton talent, obviously.

With Cyrus Monk taking the U23 road race, I'm pretty happy with the results from the RoadNats this year Smile

Well I can't be unhappy seeing Edmonson take it, I've been seeing him since the begining of his pro career and he's definely a big talent and he's got a great cobbled classics build. I really hope he has a great season has i enjoy watching the green and gold jersey on a big note

There was some weird tactics going on in that race though - not least of all by BMC, I still maintain that Canty would've won if BMC figured out their tactics. Pfft

Cam Meyer and both Clarkes also showing good form that we haven't seen so much the last couple seasons although January is early to tell.

Terrible for Durbridge btw, just after last season where he was showing great potential for the classics. Sad

I think I saw an interview where he said that's his plan for this year at least, to be 100% focused on the road.

You have to wonder for a team like Dimension Data, who says that they support African riders, they send just one rider to the South Africa TT NC

To be fair, none of them would've been good enough to win or bad enough to finish third.
