Qatar Oil Mountain Classic Preview
Up, up and away! The riders on the bikes will go up and down on this route, created out of thin air in the middle of a desert! When the order went out for making a mountain to host Qatar's own climbing race, they didn't play around. The home team won't be complaining though
| Name | MO | STA | RES | REC | ACC | | Henao Montoya | 82 | 75 | 79 | 77 | 73 | | Úran | 82 | 75 | 81 | 77 | 71 | | Intxausti | 82 | 78 | 78 | 77 | 70 | | Marquez | 80 | 70 | 78 | 77 | 80 | | Kudus | 81 | 79 | 77 | 79 | 70 | | Denifl | 84 | 75 | 71 | 76 | 65 | | Barguil | 79 | 77 | 77 | 82 | 75 | | Duarte | 80 | 74 | 76 | 78 | 73 | | Choi | 80 | 77 | 76 | 79 | 68 | | Berhane | 81 | 77 | 74 | 73 | 68 | | Nazaret | 80 | 71 | 78 | 75 | 72 | | Quintana | 81 | 77 | 76 | 76 | 65 | | Shikai | 81 | 74 | 76 | 78 | 65 | | Brajkovic | 79 | 74 | 77 | 77 | 69 | | Talansky | 79 | 75 | 76 | 77 | 69 | | Schelling | 79 | 75 | 76 | 73 | 70 | | Brenes | 79 | 73 | 80 | 70 | 70 | | Garby | 79 | 71 | 76 | 75 | 70 |
Two Colombians - Sergio Henao and Uran, and a Spaniard - Intxausti, make up the three star favourites for this race. Their abilities are very similar and it is nearly impossible to separate them on paper. Uran will be especially keen to impress in his team's home race. Henao's acceleration will give him an edge if it comes down to a drag race at the top of the mountain.
Two star favourites for this race would include Marquez, Kudus, Denifl and Barguil. They all boast a combination of high mountain climbing capability along with either super fast acceleration up a climb or high energy stats. They are also very capable of pulling off the win in this race. Among them, Barguil has the strongest support. Will Denifl be able to utilize his overpowered climbing strength to full effect?
Duarte, Choi, Shikai and Quintana are the next set of riders who will lead their team's charge in this race. While they might not be the strongest riders overall in this race, their climbing abilities should keep them in contention. They might have to rely on a long range attack, or may need to capitalize on the slacking off of the favourites to claim the win.
Some of the others capable of making a mark here are mentioned in the table above. Teams like Eritel and Berg will have to watch out for their leaders tripping over each other, given their similar climbing acumen. Indosat on the other hand seem to have the perfect super-domestique for Intxausti in Brenes.
| Name | MO | STA | RES | REC | ACC | | De la Cruz | 78 | 72 | 76 | 75 | 73 | | Chiarello | 78 | 73 | 74 | 77 | 72 | | Chamorro | 78 | 72 | 76 | 70 | 74 | | Elissonde | 78 | 76 | 77 | 79 | 66 | | Rodrigues | 78 | 71 | 74 | 70 | 72 | | Signorini | 78 | 66 | 72 | 73 | 74 |
Ticos's climbing depth becomes evident when we look at the outsiders for a win in this race. Barguil is sure to have plenty of support. It also perhaps gives them a chance to try a number of options with attacks from distance. They can really shake up the front of the race if they play it right. Berg and Indosat also seem to have a strong climbing train.
The startlist is available in the spoiler below:

Rumours are that several riders are considering starting a union to prevent the MGUCI from letting them race brutal stages like this.
Should be fun though |

Time to test out new mountain leader, Talansky. No idea how well this experiment will work, but as a late addition when other targets had gone, he can't really dissapoint the team. Would like to see Ivanov going into a move away, although that probably won't happen.
Top20 has to be the absolute minimum expectation. A Top15 would be ok. A Top10 is what i really want. Higher than that and it's a great result

Any points would be a positive surprise. Important race for a couple of the teams on the bott half of the rankings, with the first race for Henao and a chance for revenge for Uran. Also looking forward to see what Ticos can do.

Duarte quite high up in the favourites ranking. That's a good thing hopefully, and delivering would be great. Top-5 would be awesome and a real good score for our rankings

This is a winnable race...... If I could control my own team.
Taylor Newton breakaway win.
Back in reality, any points would be nice.

A very good oppportunity for us to score a decent amount of points with Intxausti's first race of the season. As one of the better teams and with one of the strongest leaders, I expect nothing more than a solid 20th-30th place and half our team to die from some unknown Qatari super-bug.
Bring it on!

Should be a fine elimination race with one clear winner eventually. Would prefer a thrilling battle between the two or three strongest of the day though. Good luck to everyone with ambitiouns here.

Hoping for a decent result from Shikai here. He could do fairly well if we're lucky, but I dont see us winning.

Any points from a mountain race are good points to me. I think we have better chances of getting those from a breakaway guy honestly. Hopefully we put someone like CAS in there.

6 of our riders are just looking for XP, the other two had spare racedays. Although this profile does remind me of Tatranska...
Will definitely be a good preview of the best climbers in the division, thanks for the fantastic preview Abhishek!

I would love to put a man in the top 5, but our goal here is to put one in the top10 and one more in the top15, less than that will be a failure.
I think at least half of the riders will not finish this race which at first glance seems inhumane...
For me Kudus will win this race

This field is stacked, I would hope for a top 10 by Schelling but that seems very unlikely. It should be fun anyway!

I have to thank the Sheikh for putting up the mountains. It's a weird sight I'll grant you that, but it should be fun. Obviously we have trained here a lot over the past few weeks and I have no doubt that Úran will win here.
Win goal is obvious.

This race could be held anywhere else... but Qatar with the highest point of 103 metres above the sea level, really. Hopefully my former riders Uran, Henao Montoya and Denifl can all do some business here though.

Not gonna complain about the outcome of points for me. 8th is absolutely amazing for Grigrian and possibly one of the greatest results of an Armenian ever in MG history.
But Duarte, really? Hopefully a -5 day, otherwise this is not promising.
