It's not the first time this was brought up though. It seemed very unreal. On the other hand, if anyone could pull that of, it's Spartacus.

Some actual news then: The Scheldeprijs will see a big change in race route. The start will be in Zeeland and it will actually follow the Schelde river rather than go inland. Heavy crosswinds can be expected, so it could make the race more interesting than just the last 5km.

With Kittel not at Quick Step anymore, it could end up interesting. Then again, it is Scheldeprijs. Literally, the most uninspiring race in the calendar. The Anti-Ronde.

In other terms: Raphael Freienstein ends his career. What a pity! He won the German amateur calendar this year, but given up on a professional career due to his age (29) and lack of German PCT team. I absolutely hate that decision, as Freienstein was in my eyes one of the best CT riders, that could've been a very valuable domestique on WT level given his allround abilities. Some big talents sleeping in him, I'd have loved to see him getting a chance.

I've been catching up with the latest cycling related news and came across with this article, where Eusebio Unzue suggests the introduction of substitute cyclists in GT's: https://www.cyclin...and-tours/
Is this even slightly plausible? Wouldn't it spoil the truth of the final GC? Or even fair towards fully fit riders? Seems just like an attempt to unburden Movistar's miserable campaign on this year's Tour. Unzue's been good at it lately. |

Don't think it's plausible at all, the first of the (many) problems to come to mind is what if a team with a good climber waits until week 3, has one of their men abandon and then this guy with fresh legs has a huge advantage in going for stage wins over other riders. Similarly KOM contenders might not bother riding the first stages or GC teams would completely swap out their squad halfway through the race (f.e. Sky could have Landa, Kwiatek, Thomas and Henao support Froome the first two weeks, then week 3 swap out their weaker domestiques so that the team now has Nieve, Poels and Moscon as well as the former mentioned 4). Would completely ruin the racing.
Even if you stipulated things like only riders who are too injured to continue can be swapped, where do you draw the line when somebody crashes? What if somebody gets 'sick'? And even if they could manage that, it would just mean that teams who lose a rider or a few have a massive advantage with fresh legs.

UK Anti Doping has ended it's investigation into "Packagegate" with no charges as there was no evidence of any wrong doing. As everyone always knew would happen right from the start.

Bora lost out on a shitload of money, I'd assume it's about damages, and maybe just about being right and avoiding a similar situation in the future.
Difficult to assess though how much prize money and exposure was lost.

What is it with ex professionals thinking they can take up another sport in their late 30's? I'm looking forward to seeing Rio Ferdinand get knocked out in the boxing ring. Although they'll probably put him up against a complete bum.

It's definitely one i can't quite get my head around. I understand Sagan/Bora being angry at the decision, but going to CAS 5months down the road?
It's got to be about getting damages and missed earnings, it was the Tour after all and by far the biggest race of the year. But they've got to prove some wrongdoing from the comissaires, which is going to be tricky in a subjective review.
The worry is how much this could undermine the comissaires role in the future. Succesfully claim back the damage and it shows others they can also challenge the decisions. And where the money will come from, the UCI or ASO. Either way it could be rather damaging if Sagan/Bora win the appeal case.

There isn't.
Mathieu and Wout get close to 10k/start in cyclocross and that's just start money.
Stybar earned much more in cyclocross than he does on the road.
On the road you get a wage + sponsorships. In Cross the top guys get wage + start money + prize money + sponsorships.
