Training: Time on the Climbs
The time and money we have invested over the offseason is starting to pay off.
They hated it at the time, but the extra training should be worth it (hopefully).

Those jerseys are super nice (especially Canada), I really like the clean look. Good luck this year, I think your squad will be one of the heavy hitters in the division.

Interesting to see you going to ToA.
Not that many race days clashing for TJ and EBH actually, will compete against each other in Pais Vasco, San Sebastian, Nelspruit, Emilia and Japan Cup.

Pais Vasco will unsurprisingly feature the two best PCT puncheurs. Glad I trained Bobridge and yeah, there are TT kilometres

And still lists off over half of TVG races... Would have rather not faced EBH again this season, but what's life without a little excitement.
Also, on the decision to go to the Tour of America, that was an extremely hard choice. Not having the best climbers in a division stacked with them, it felt best to just try and avoid the climbs altogether. Obviously that isn't completely possible with all the band selections. So, this is the next best option.
Really hoping the tag-team of Warbasse and Fraile can compete for the win on home turf. Would be a really cool race to win after finishing 2nd and 3rd with Igor Anton so many years ago. Oh, an American has yet to win the thing as well.

It's a race TVG won before and can win again. We are bringing a top-notch TTT team to support him as well. Should be a fun race.

Very interesting scheduling! Especially looking at your ambitions in Almaty, which is one of the biggest races for us all season where he'll meet our 1A squad.

For fuck's sake, did anyone just pick Almaty over Strade?

well, looking at Almatys last year there is a good chance of a sprint of decent puncheurs - which is not possible at Strade...and you know, there is a pretty decent sprinter in my team that goes pretty well over hills

Will of course be supporting the Newton Foundation yet again! We're racing in the same division for what I think may be the first time but I do believe we'll be fighting at different ends of the table. Look forward to racing against you and hopefully our teams can co-operate a bit to challenge the big stars (other than TVG of course!).

Roman Maksimov takes third in Stage 1 of the Corsica International.
The third monthly installment of the PCT point standings has been released and the Newton Foundation was ecstatic to see that we have climbed into the top spot.

It's been an exciting season so far with contributions coming from everybody on the roster. Here are the best five highlights from January through March.
Maksimov takes second in Stage 2.
Roman Maksimov is in the form of his life at the moment. Four months into the season and the Russian Rocket is 21st in the individual rankings.
The season isn't even halfway finished and Maksimov is on pace for a career year.
Year | Team | Stage Wins | Ranking Points | 2009 | (CT) White Bear Steyr | 0 | 0 (NR) | 2010 | (PT) White Bear - Wild Horse | 0 | 65 (346th) | 2011 | (PT) Festina - Corona [Loan] | 0 | 24 (490th) | 2012 | (CT) Team CSC - Orbea | 0 | 39 (363rd) | 2013 | (CT) Team Privatbank [Loan] | 4 | 168 (52nd) | 2014 | (PCT) Project: Africa | 1 | 394 (50th) | 2015 | (PT) Movistar - US Postal | 1 | 276 (111th) | 2016 | (PT) Movistar - US Postal | 0 | 308 (98th) | 2017 | (PCT) Newton Foundation | 0 | 188 (21st) |
Many of the points this season came in Africa with a sixth overall placing in this sprinter's four-day stage race. Maksimov placed second, fifth, sixth and 17th in the stages. A better result on the final day and he could have finished inside the Top 3.
No. 4 Vuelta al Pais Vasco
Tejay Van Garderen sprints to a second in Stage 4.
In a race that saw the yellow jersey flip hands stage after stage, Van Garderen was consistent and never panicked. The previous winner of the event back in 2015 placed second overall after two runner-up finishes in stages.
While being topped by rival Edvald Boasson Hagen, it was still a big points haul being a PTHC category race. EBH leads the PCT individual rankings with TVG tied for second with Michal Kwiatkowski.
Ramon Domene comes home in second place.
Sometimes being lucky is better than being good.
This race was a failure from a race organizer's perspective. A thrilling hilly cobbled classic that just crumbled at the end of the race.
Being at the right place at the right time, Domene capitalized with a rare second place finish. By far the best result of his career. He sits 72nd in the individual standings with 73 points. Last year in the PT he had 76 points.
TVG with the victory salute.
Our only win of the season so far. In a race pegged as one of our win goals, TVG didn't disappoint. He attacked and got away with 3kms to go. The rest was history.
It's Van Garderen's team-high seventh win under my management, and his first win at the PCT level. Hopefully, more wins are to come with three more team win goals resting on his shoulders.
Alexey Tsatevich and Marcos Altur sprint to a 2-3 finish.
While TVG gets most of the headlines, it's been our cobble team that has really pushed us into first place after four months. The double podium in Belgium marked standout results for both Tsatevich and our young prodigy Altur.
Tough to see the cobbles season ending, but it's promising to see Altur reaching his full potential. His cobbled win has to be right around the corner.
Year | E3 | G-W | RvV | P-R | OHN | 2013 | | | | | | 2014 | 55th | | | | | 2015 | | | 29th | 25th | 39th | 2016 | | | 40th | 10th | 8th | 2017 | 25th | 3rd | | | 8th |
Now, with this pat on the back complete, it's time to get back to work. Promotion is possible, but it must be earned. Sights are set forward, not backward.

My annual look back at the season that was and what's ahead.
PCT 5th Overall : 3/5 Goals : 8 Wins
***Team Standings*** | Top 5 | 5th | Nelspruit Classic | Win | 2nd - Tejay Van Garderen | Tour of South Africa | Win | 1st - Tejay Van Garderen | Tour of Almaty | Win | 1st - Tejay Van Garderen | Japan Cup | Win | 2nd - Tejay Van Garderen |
A few months into the season, we were the team to beat. We had taken the top of the table with a win by TVG at the Tour of Almaty and the depth of our cobbles squad.
Ramon Domene (pictured) in particular had an excellent season with a second at the Viana do Castelo, plus a stage win and points jersey at the KBC De Panne. Marcos Altur has also continued to develop and got a stage win at the famous 5 Jours de Dunkerque.
It was a goal race and an event where rival EBH didn't bother to show up. TVG embraced the situation by standing on the final podium in yellow with two stage wins to his credit. It was also very much a team effort as a solid TTT on Stage 4 got our American leader into yellow.
One can only imagine what would have happened if EBH, the PCT Ind. Rankings winner, hadn't moved down to compete with TVG this year.
Maksimov and consistency shouldn't belong in the same sentence, but here we are. The Russian Rocket has capped his best season ever in the man-game without recording a single win. A handful of Top 5's and decent GC placings earned Maksimov 393 rankings points (41st).
All the offseason training on the hills over the years is finally paying off.
It was a risk, but I'd say it worked. The tag team of Lawrence Warbasse and Omar Fraile spent most of their race days in the PCT GT. Warbasse got unlucky and crashed early on, but Fraile batted and used his TT prowess to finish 6th overall with a stage win.
Now in his prime, we are excited to see what Fraile can do next.
Final race of the season, promotion on the line. TVG didn't disappoint.
A gutsy 2nd place behind EBH (grr...) moved us from eighth to fifth in the standings on the last day of the season. An incredible swing to get us back into the Pro Tour after a quick detour in the second tier division.

Efficiency = Point per RD DIVIDED by Wage per RD MULTIPLED by 100.
Now that we have spent the last few hours celebrating our return to the Pro Tour, we should probably start preparations to avoid relegation again.
I've been putting this off because (1) I was nervous we weren't going to promote and (2) some harsh decision about our roster have to be made to compete at the next level. It's not going to be easy and key cyclists could be sold/traded away.
That said, our first matter of business is a new sponsor for next season.
We were grateful to raise awareness and funds for the Newton Foundation this season (and Taylor Newton has a spot reserved on my team for as long as he wants to keep racing), but with our recent success we have received some big offers to fund our cycling team in the Pro Tour. We can't pass that up.
We will be making that announce in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Awesome job from Tejay to clinch promotion, congrats! Always enjoy your round-ups and these stats, and I'm very happy to see you guys back in PT! Also as I don't want to be facing Altur or TJVG next season

Congrats for returning to the highest level! Will be interesting to see how you build your team to stay in PT, as you have already said that some of your top riders might leave in transfers. Given you seem to have dropped the Spanish focus and gone all-American, i guess we'll be in touch in transfers

It's been a long season, but a rewarding one.
Here at Newton Foundation we didn't have a lot of young cyclists,
but are happy to see improvements out of two guys heading into next season.
Unfortunately, we couldn't give Carter Jones the experience needed to max out.
